So I am pot full of questions today sorry about that!

I am in a position that I can purchase a new excersize machine. I want one that can be used for all of the body(that way Trav can work out with me) but my main focus is for the midsection. Do you wonderful ladies have any suggestions?

Also I am putting a gym in my basement (yay me!) would you carpet it or what would you do with the flooring so that it is more comfort for working out?

But my hand me downs are just not working like they should anymore. the ab lounger I have from my sister has seen more of a sewing machine then my quilt and the stationary bike well lets just say its had to much kid time lol. I use my machines I just need newer so that it will work on me instead of me work on it!

I had an elliptical for cardio and that's excellent, but for building muscle I had an old school total gym that I adored (I could work just about everything and in the grand scheme of things, it was a pretty cheap machine). We moved and sold them due to lack of space, but if I ever have the space again I'd buy them both without hesitating.

I am in the process of doing the same in our basement. I have a treadmill which is my main piece. I have been searching the internet for inspiration. My husband suggested out door porch carpet but I decided on the flooring per the below link.

I would have loved and elliptical, but my husband has to keep his run times down for the APFT, so we got a treadmill. We also have a rowing machine which is FANTASTIC for full-body workouts IF you use the correct form. If you don't do it right, it's worthless. My husband did crew for his university, so he obviously knows the right form. Some day, I'll have him teach me. :)

The obvious advantage to the elliptical is the low-impact. When I was in college, I ALWAYS tried to grab one when I went to the gym (as did nearly every other girl, so sometimes it didn't work out!) Any aerobic exercise (cardio) will help all areas.

As far as muscle tone in the midsection, try to do core training exercises. I tried to look at core exercise equipment but there is just WAY too much to muddle though. Looks like it would be better to decide on what exercises you want, then get the equipment required for those. Best part about the core exercises is that most of them require minimal equipment, too!

I do the eliptical at the gym and think it's a tough workout. If you are looking for midsection then get a big ol' yoga ball! They are about $20 at Sports Authority and they usually come with directions on what to do for your abs. Great investment, super cheap, will work you!

My eliptical is a great workout but I dont like it:). I tend to use my recumbent bike the most (comfy seat, easy on my knees) the most. I have been doing at least one hour of cardio per day for the last year:)
My take is the best equipment to buy is the one you will use. FYI...never ever use our rower. Really hate that!! I also recommend getting a bench and some free weights too.

Any machine that you'll actually use is the best one.
Otherwise just pick out something that you can hang clothes on.

I love my Ab Doer Twist. Been eyeballing it for a year, & then Amazon put it on sale the week before Christmas! Love it.

& my sons have been known to sit down & do a mini-workout. At this point, for all of us, even a mini-workout is better than nothing!

My livestrong elliptical is freaking amazing. I had my eye on it for a long time before I finally bought it when it went on sale at the sporting goods store. I freaking LOVE IT. It's so comfortable to use, but works me out so hard.

I love my elliptical for cardio but it doesn't do much for the midsection. I recently bought a used TransFIRMer set and it's been great. It's similar to an aerobic stepper but can also be put on a slant. It comes with videos that are a very intense full body workout. I highly recommend it for tightening up those jiggly spots.
