I'm getting ready for cold winter nights early, and would like any recommendations on a good electric blanket to buy for myself. I really like the look and feel of the fleece ones, but want it to hold up well, not get "bally" and be machine washable. Thanks in advance Moms!

Hi A.,

I used to use electric blankets until I found out they are not good for you. It puts to much electricity into your body. I use a farin-frared blanket that I use all year round and it keeps me perfect in the winter and summer. Without the electricity. It balances out the temperature of your body.

If you would like more info let me know.

Good luck.

I know someone whose house burned down because of a faulty electric blanket. I thought about getting one myself since I'm cold all the time until that incident. Also, I hear that they're not good for you. I think you should do more research before you get one.

I bought my electric blanket from JC Penney's about 5 years ago and just warm up my bed and turn it off when I climb in for the night. It has washed well without a lot of balling. I bought my daughters electric blanket at Costco about two years ago and it works just as well. Sorry, I am not sure what the brands are but both were bought during winter time and washed immediately without any problems. Good Luck.

A.:
Electric blankets are not good for your health. Many of our electrical appliances we own are hazardous to our health, depending on how much exposure you have.
The EPA (environmental protection agency) warns us of the dangers of EMFs I(electromagnetic fields, and advices prudent avoidance b/c there is reason for concerns.
I am aware that we cannot get rid of all the radiation from EMFs, but if you can avoid exposure as much as possible, you will be healthier.
Check out the info in the internet (you tube has a lot of videos); check out dr. Joseph mercola (www.mercola.com) as: Are EMFs Hazardous to our health.

good luck

If you want something electric, I would recommend an electric mattress pad instead. Heat rises. I use one on occassion and have been happy with it. I believe I got it from Penneys. The one I have has zones so where you want more heat, there are more "coils". Having dual controls is handy since men generally want less warmth than women. Since it is a mattress pad, you don't have to worry about pilling, too. Hope that helps.
