we are moving and will have an extra room again...yay! before girl #2 was born, we had a spare bedroom in the house we live in now, and we had a nice quality wood futon frame which we kept open and bought a full size mattress for so that it was more comfortable than an actual futon. i'm not sure that i want to use the same frame (which we have been storing for over a year now) and the mattress is now in my older daughter's room. what is a good option for an extra room which will function as office/guest bedroom? are there actually good quality, comfortable sleeper sofas out there? are there good futon options? i would rather have something that converts from couch-bed instead of buying a bed frame and mattress, but i want it to be comfortable too. ideas?
thanks so much!!

What can I do next?

We bought a sofa sleeper; the mattress is an inflatable -- it costs a little more, but is also very comfortable. When fully inflated it looks like a regular pillow-top mattress, and it can be adjusted to very firm or soft. It's a great improvement compared to a regular sofa sleeper skinny, uncomfortable mattress.

We love Jennifer Convertibles. They are affordable and have different types of fabric and colors to choose from. We have a brown suede Queen size in our guestroom. I made sure to get the thicker matress with it and they also sold us a blow up matress that goes on it as well. My in-laws stay with me for about 4 months out of the year and they sleep on it with no problems. Hope this helps.

We're looking at getting a sleeper sofa too for our guest room. I don't know which kind yet but I do know the mattresses have gotten a lot better. My sister has an old but great one. They don't necessary have springs now. Hopefully someone will answer with a good one but otherwise look around. I slept on one in a hotel recently that was good. Not cushion top soft but no springs poking out either. And I plan to get a cushion top to put on top when someone actually does stay on it. I think a sofa bed is the best looking of all the options. We have a daybed now and it's just huge and awkward looking.

I guess you have to figure out a few things first. Who do you expect to stay over night? Single friends or family members? Couples? Young or elderly? Will you use it for a place to sleep when husband is snoring or one of you is sick? How big is the room and what else will you use the room for besides a guest room? You mention an office, so how often will you need this office if guests are there? We just moved and my choice for the extra room that would have to be my sewing room, was to put in a simple twin bed for guests. Chances are that our only over night guest will be our 4 yr oldgrand daughter, and if her M. is here too, they can share the twin, or sleep on the floor. If a couple comes to visit, Im pretty sure they would rather stay in a hotel.
So figure out what you want to use the room for, and how youd like it to look. If we had enough space in our home office Id like a nice looking couch in it so I can sit and visit with my husband while he works at home. Ive sat/laid down on some top quality futons and you couldnt tell it folded up into a couch. Some are really comfy.

My parents keep a day bed with a pop up trundle in their guest room. Can be used as a twin or put up the trundle and it's a double.

My friend has a sofa sleeper with an inflatable mattress, instead of a regular mattress. It is way more comfortable than most sofa sleepers, where the mattress is too thin and you can feel the springs and lumps underneath. I have no idea what brand it is (they live in the Bay Area), but I'm sure if you look for something along those lines, you can find one.

The mattress inflates in less than 30 seconds and deflates easily as well.

We bought a futon with a mattress upgrade (8" thick, with a bit of memory foam!) from a futon store in Orange county. With the mattress upgrade, it was around $800, which sounded like a lot until we looked at the price of nice-looking sleeper sofas. Our futon in the guest room is in sofa-state usually, but folds out to a queen size bed for when my parents & guests come to stay with us. I think it's more comfortable than our regular mattresses!
