Best at Home Hair Color?

This past July I finally went to a salon and had my grey covered. I know the $200 salon bill was normal but it's just not in my price range to spend every 8 weeks.

What home hair color products have you had success with? I've never colored my own hair before and I'd love your tips.

What can I do next?

I color my hair at home. I use either Garnier, Nice & Easy, or Revlon Color Silk...when it's on sale. I have used Avon's hair color and I love it. I especially love how the color looks afterwards. It lasts longer than any other hair color product I have used. If you like to know more about it, send me a message. Hope this is useful !!

I've used every store brand - yuck! I have used the Sally Beauty Supply brands (good but fades quickly) and now I have discovered - esalon. I sound like a commercial lol. Anyway I have used them for the past 3 months and have been very happy with the results. My hair does not look fried, the smell is tolerable, and there is little staining. I also really love the color they did for me. Check it out esalon.com

I promise I do not work for or get paid for endorsing them - just happy with my results :)

Henna!
I used dyes for several years to cover my grey but it was frying my hair.
It was brittle, broke easily and I swear every hair on my head had split ends.
I gave it up and started using henna every 8 weeks.
It takes awhile (4 hours) but my hair feels so much better.
It's been about 8 years now and my hair looks and feels great!
I can grow it to bra strap length, it never has that ammonia chemical smell you get from dyes, I don't have any split ends and it shines.
My color before henna is medium brown with grey creeping in.
After henna I get a wonderful auburn and the grey becomes coppery highlights.
The color seems a little bright at first but it oxidizes and mellows within a day or so.

This is a great henna site and will tell you all about it:

eSalon is the best service you can use. It's $20/order.

It's professional haircolor that you do yourself.
I've been a loyal fan for 2 years.

You fill out your profile online, choose the color you want, and then submit a recent picture of yourself. Their stylists will help to customize the color so that it's flattering. Any changes you want to make, they will work with you to arrive at the right palette with instructions on how to make the changes as your dye.
It's also REALLY easy to do yourself once you get the hang of it. Go slow your first time, and then next time, you know exactly what to do.
Piece of cake.

I think I also use Garnier Nutrisse. It's a foam that you apply to your hair. I've tried many and like that one the best. I have long hair so I always buy 2 boxes...every month. Be careful with reds. I used to have a lovely natural hair color, and regret to the fullest deciding to dye my hair. I got a bug a last year to have a burgundy color, and it ended up looking horrid on me. Every reddish color turns very vibrant on me. Now I can't get the red out of my hair.

I paid once to have my hair dyed at a salon, but it's so not worth it. yes, it does come out better, but not $100 worth. Every 6 to 8 weeks my BFF and I get together to do each others hair. You don't mention your hair color. Blonde and light brown can be very difficult especially if you have stubborn grey.

I've had the best results with Nice and Easy. Revlon is the cheapest, it works well, however, it does smell the worst and only gives you a small packet of conditioner, whereas, other brands give you a tube of conditioner to use one a week. I used Loreal once and my hair turned an eggplant color, so I stay away. However, Loreal does work well on my BFF's light colored hair.

TIPS
- It's best to have a friend help you if possible. It can be difficult to make sure all areas of your hair are colored if you do it yourself.
- Supplies - make sure you have an old towel and extra pair of plastic gloves.
- Works better on dirty hair. Wait at least 24 hours after shampooing.
- Don't go more than a shade or two lighter or darker than your natural color.

I was shocked that I liked Avon hair color....

I have tried Garnier, L'Oreal, etc....but my hair felt "dry" and straw-like afterwards...

With Avon - I've not had the problem. I get the "highlights" that **I** am looking for and it's close enough to my natural color that I don't get the problem with root grow out.

You need to find the product that works best for you. That has the color that you want - highlights and lowlights that you want as well. It took me several years and many products to get it right for me.

Make sure you purchase a coloring cape - or use a towel that you don't care about.

Clean up ANY spills, splashes, etc. IMMEDIATELY...it will stain painted walls, doors, cabinets, etc.

Hope this helps!

I use Light Mountain henna. I get it at Whole Foods for about $6 a box. My hair is short so one box does it twice. Color lasts about six weeks.
My hair is naturally medium brown, liberally shot with grey. The henna makes it auburn and the grey turns to copper highlights. My hair is soft after coloring.
The henna has to cure in the bowl for at least two hours before applying, but it only has to sit on your hair for twenty minutes.

I usually buy whatever is on sale, since I have a fairly "run of the mill" haircolor and I don't mind a little variation.
My favorites though are Olia (a new product, a little more difficult to apply because it is thicker, but beautiful deep color that did not fade), Nutrisse and Feria.
They all come with a conditioner you apply after you wash out the color, if you put a little of the conditioner on your skin along the hair line, it will be much easier to wipe off any color that gets on your skin.
Also I find that a broad toothed comb and a box of examination gloves (in your size) make home coloring A LOT easier. Particularly the gloves that come in the kit suck and wearing well fitting gloves is so much less of a mess/hassle.
Good luck.

I've used just about everything on the market, and they all made my hair dry and strawlike afterward. Nice and Easy was probably the best I tried from the store, though. I now use e-salon.com. It's about $20, but it comes to you on a schedule you decide. They have you upload a pic and tell them all about your hair type and texture. My hair is still soft and shiny after using it and it covers the grey well. If you look at their facebook page they have a coupon for your first box, too.

And if you use henna you cannot use permanent dyes until ALL your henna dyed hair has completely grown out and been cut off!! It also has to stay on your hair for hours vs 30 minutes. It's not good for covering grey hair, either.

Clairol Natural Instincts; I love this brand and color! I, too was afraid to do it myself. It is easier if you are going the same color or darker. If you are trying to do blonde, or highlights, be careful! I've only gone a shade or two darker than my natural brown hair color. I personally would not attempt to do highlights or go lighter. I tried that once years ago and it didn't turn out well! All the best...

I use whatever is inexpensive - I think I spend about $5 at Target. I read a tip once to cover the skin at your hairline plus your ears with conditioner, this prevents the color from staining your skin. It works.

In my hands, colors come out darker than I expect them to - I have dark brown hair. So I look for the shade I think I need, and then I go one lighter. When I use a shade that says dark brown, I end up with black hair which is not flattering for me. If I buy medium brown, I get dark brown which is what I want.

What you won't get with a box that you do get from your salon is highlights. I'm not brave enough to attempt highlights on my own, although I'd love to have them.

I have to color my gray hair every 3-5 weeks. I buy my hair color from Sally Beauty Supply. I use their Ion liquid hair color.

The first time I ever tried to color my hair, I bought some boxed hair color from Target (L'Oreal?) and my hair looked reddish. I went to Sally Beauty Supply to see what I could do to correct it. The woman working behind the counter happened to know how to cut and color hair, so she walked me through all the steps I needed to take to color my hair.

After using coupons, it ends up costing me only $6 to color my hair (mostly just the roots) each time. Believe me, if I had to money to go to a salon each month, I would. But this is good enough for now. Incidentally, people are shocked when I tell them I color my hair. So I guess it looks pretty natural :-)

If you have a Sally or Ulta nearby, see if they can help you. Now all these other ladies have me wondering if I should try esalon....

Good luck!

I love and will only use the Garnier Nutrisse hair color kit! I have tried other brands such as Revlon... that one stains your skin for days! Be careful if you have dark hair and have to use a dark color!
