My soon-to-be 4-year-old daughter has outgrown her convertible car seat. She is 41 inches now and about 40 lbs. I'd like to get a 5-point harness booster seat for her, preferably one that goes up to 100 lbs. I know some of the booster seats were rated and most of them failed, but most of the ones rated well are not 5-point harness. Has anyone done this research and gotten a definitive answer? Or at least can someone point me in the right direction? I'm feeling overwhelmed with choices. Is Britax really worth the money?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all of the advice. We got 2 Britax Regents on sale (I also have a big 18-month-old boy). Haven't heard anyone have anything bad to say about Britax and it just make me feel more comfortable.

We do not and will not use any type of "booster" or anything that will turn into a booster, as they're not safe and will not keep a child safe in a hard crash. YouTube has a lot of videos with families who had one child in a booster and one in a car seat. The one in the booster was either killed or hurt terribly. The one in the car seat was fine.

With that said, Your best rated is the Britax. Our favorite is the Regent, which is apparently closing out so instead of paying $250+, you can now get them online for $159 with free shipping. We bought three for our triplets at the high price using last year's tax refund. With this year's tax refund we'll be being one more at the lower price for hubby's SUV so he can take one of the kids with him solo, which we like to do at times.

The Britax Regent is large, very roomy! It is a total 5pt harness car seat. No booster at all. It goes up to 80lbs. Two of my triplets are smaller and they fit well. (They're 5) One is big for his age and has plenty of room in this. We love them! They are fantastic seats! Worth every penny. If you go to the different web sites and compare measurements of the seating area and shoulder heights, you'll find the Regent has the most room. Even the Britax Frontier doesn't compare. They're fancy looking but have less seating room and the arm rests would get in the way of my kids. Their torsos stay put but they like flopping their legs and arms where they like for longer trips.

YES, BRITAX IS COMPLETELY WORTH THE MONEY! We spent three times the money just for the safety and room! Go for the Britax Regent. Get one before they're gone!

We've been very happy with our Britax car seats. Had a Roundabout and then our daughter outgrew it at age three, so we moved on to the Frontier. I tried to save money and bought the Graco convertible/booster combo (drawing a blank on the name) and it was a royal PITA to install and I couldn't get it snug in our second row Honda Odyssey. Took that back and got the Frontier. The Frontier wasn't much better to install, but when I called customer service for help, I reached a real person here in the U.S. (had a Southern accent) and the person was very friendly and helpful.

The convertible/booster combo seats are massive, heavy and not fun to install, but they will last longer than other seats. I'm hoping when it converts to a booster, it's like a regular booster and piece of cake to install.

I also have the Graco Nautilus. It is an excellent carseat and half the price of the Britex. I'm not sure it's rating, but my husband races cars and says it is designed like the 5-pt harness in a race car. It is much smaller than the Britex and will fit in a car. I can get 3 car seats across in my CRV with this one (Nautilus, Britex Roundabout rearfacing, and Cosco Highback convertible seat for extra passengers). Besides the safety, my son LOVES his seat. He can still sleep/rest on long trips and it has a cupholder and little cubbies on the side for his stuff.
