I am a single mom who is having behavior problems with my 3 year-old. She hits, sticks her tongue out, and talks back to me and her grandparents. She is especially mean to my boyfriend of almost a year. I work full-time, so it is hard to raise her the way I want to. I have tried everything from spanking her to taking away toys to ignoring. What do I do to get her to behave and warm up to my boyfriend? Help!!

What can I do next?

I know how you feel. I have a 7 year old that has been this way since birth. She has the will of a iron fist. Drives me insane. I have tried it all. Now she is in 1st grade and causing more problems then I can say.

The school and my church both use Parenting with Love and Logic. I have read part of the book and it is very good but wasn't enough for my daughter. I have now started reading How to Parent a Strong Willed Child. I haven't gotten very far into yet but I can tell you so far sounds just like my daughter. I would suggest that you take a look at a couple of these.

Like you, I am a single mom. It is hard and when it gets bad, I do put her in her room and I go sit on my bed and just pray for guidance and patience.

There are good days and I cherish those. Hopefully for you it is just a phase your child is going through. Please try to get hold of both books and see if they help.

Keep up the love and you will get through it all.

Your in my prayers.

i know this sounds strange but my friend told me about a punishment that helped her friend's daughter. nothing would work when she tried to punish her so she took away color. the kid loved wearing colors and when she wouldn't listen etc, the made her wear one solid color, white or black. it works. take something that she really loves and see how it works. i hope it helps and good luck.

Hi! I work at J. Pat Burlesons - Legends Martial Arts. I would suggest getting her into my Lil Legends Karate class. It is designed to target the 3 - 5 year old kids. Teaching them discipline, and respect but also still having fun. Our website is I will give her a free week to try it out and see what you think. This is a wonderful age to start this kind of training...Take care!!

I have a three year old daughter as well that had some behavior problems. The trick is being consistant. If she bad talks put her in the corner for 3 min. Then talk to her and let her know that we don't do that and have her appolize, if she doesn't then another 3 minites and so on. My daughter is stuburn it took about 1hr to get her to understand. The grandparent need to do the same thing both have to work together otherwise she'll work the both of you!!!! She'll start to realize that if she talk back she'll be sent to the corner. When she acts out on your boyfriend the same thing tell her we don't hit, talk back or whatever to an adult. Same thing put her in the corner for 3 min and then sit her on your lap and explain that we don't act like that. Then ask her to appolize. IF not then another 3 min. If needed put her in her bed.

I'll pray things will get better, Remember be consistant if you let one thing slid then she'll think the next will slide. Its a stage they go thru they want to see what they can get away with! Keep your will and remember it'll get better!!!
