Becoming a Hairstylist

Ok, well...We just had our beautiful baby boy a little over a month ago and I'm rethinking my career outlook. I want something that is flexible, but something that I will enjoy. I picked accounting as my career goal b/c I read online that it is very flexible, but I HATE accounting. I have considered becoming a hairstylist for many years, and I think I could do it b/c I would like it. However, my husband thinks it won't be fullfilling enough for me. Also, he thinks the money won't be there and then I'll be looking for something else. As of right now, I'm considering quiting work and going to school so I can get my degree and get my career started. I'm tired of waiting to do something I enjoy. Do you have any suggestions? Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks so much :)

What can I do next?

Hello M. V: I am a 52 yr old woman who is learning to live a new life.My daughter was killed in 2001 & I shut down for 7 yrs. I wrote a book RAINBOWS AFTER THE STORM, published & in bookstores. My advice is spend as much time w/ur child as possible. U can't make precious memories if ur not with him. A friend signed me up for this email & i never understood why-my age, no children, etc. I asked God to put someone in my life today to share with & for some reason, I opened urs. As i said, i was loss for yrs. I got addicted to morphine pain patches, almost died..lots of luggage-decided 1 day that i had to learn to live a new life. I received a phone call asking me to come to a Mary Kay skin care class. I didn't like Mary Kay products but went to be sociable. I LOVED the product but most of all loved the MK way of life-God first, family 2nd & Career 3rd. I have since became a consultant & in less than 2 mths have earned aprox $2000.00. I have set my own schedule, etc. Sat alone I sold $719 in prod, which means I made $359.50 for about 3 hours work! That breaks down to $119.83 an hr! How much do u make? Now I don't want to make u think I do that every wk, cause I don't. But it is not uncommon for me to do a party with sales of $300-$500. Usually an individual sales is over $50. I have cleared around $2000.00 & have been in Mary Kay for less than 2 mths. The women I meet are so uplifting & u can take ur child w/u. My National Sales Director's children have grown up at parties & know more than I do about the product. It has been such a wonderful opportunity in my life & I can get carried away! The product sales itself. No pressure sales, etc. No gimmicks, MK has been around for over 50 years & now is in the sales bracket w/Clinque,Lancome, etc. Please go to my website www.marykay.com/sherryneu or call me ###-###-####. "Insanity is doing the same thing over & over again & expecting something different." U have to make a decision & do it. If it turns out it's not for u, then u have gained the experience in life, & do something different! But most of all, put ur family first in EVERYTHING u do because u don't know what the next 5 minutes will bring into ur life. Don't live in fear of what might happen, live in the moments! May u find rainbows after every storm in ur life!

i have been a hairstylist for 24 years. i love what i do! yes, it is a very flexible job~ especially when you just rent a station. i am able to take off when needed for my children or even when wanted, thus you don't work, you don't get paid!! there was something that i didn't plan on though~ i was married for 14 years and my husband paid all the major bills. then one day, he left! so i went from being responsible for no expenses to all. and he became that wonderful dead beat dad, grrr. one day, the graceful woman i am, fell and broke my arm. well, guess what.... not only did i not have insurance, i couldn't work. (remember, you don't work, you don't get paid). now i am faced with.... when i ever want to quite doing hair~ i have zero retirement. and since the ex is well over $12,000 behind in child support there is no extra to put back. i live in a very small town, my youngest child is about to graduate from high school and i am so ready to move on.... but no idea what i would do other than hair. but moving to another area and rebuilding my clientel would be scary (ya don't work ya don't get paid story again). so to reiterate~ it is a wonderful job! you meet great people, as well as some not so great, ha. just A. be prepared!!!! i have learned the hard way!

My sister is a hairstylist, and I will just give you a little bit of info about her life and how it works for her. She went straight from highscool into Tomball Beauty Acad. after she finished school, she went to work for an area upscale salon. She worked at this salon for over 5 years to build up her clients, and now went out on her own (about 5 mins down the road and she just rents a room out of a salon, so her own boss). Now it has worked out for her bc 98% of her clients followed her to her new place. My sister is always busy and she makes alot of money. She is the bread winner in their family... she now takes Sunday, Mondays, and every once in awhile Tuesdays off.... but to take all of these days off, she must work 12 hr days the rest of the week. She WORKS a ton of hours!!! (but she has to for income) Now she has a 5 yr old and a 1 yr old. Anyway, my point is I think this is not as flexible as you might think. If you dont have to rely on the income, then yeah, theres more flexiblity, but you wont make alot of money that way either. This really is a career that depends on how many hours you work. Now eventually my sister hopes to work less... her next step will be to own one of those salons and rent the rooms out... that way she can still have the income, without working all of the hours. But by then her children are all in school, possibly in middle school etc. So she missed out alot on the baby toddler, elem. years. At any rate, this is just a little insight on the profession. You know what works best for you family, and how many hours you are willing to spend or take away from you kiddos. I just want to make sure you realize the schedule and hours are not flexible at all, unless you are willing to not make very much $$$$. Hope this helps!

Find your passion and work within it. If you do what you love you will love what you do. I love to raise my children and help as many people as possible to do the same. I do believe in home businesses that can allow you a professional income and the freedom to choose.Hairstylist can make good money with long hours until they build their client base up. Just continue to listen to your heart and continue to check out your options and you will know the direction to go when it is time.

Hi M. V. My name is T., a 26 yo, disabled work at home M.. I was not disabled until the birth of my daughter, Eliana, 8 months old. The epidural severely injured my spine and now I am unable to work a full time job, some days I can't even hold a jar off baby food, let alone my baby. I have started my own business, make my own hours, and am loving it. I can work when I'm not hurting and won't get fired for the days that I am. I am looking for new people to join my team. It would only cost you $25.00 to start, and you could start making money the same day. If you are interested in hearing more please feel free to e-mail me... ____@____.com

Many Blessings,

Hi my name is Dora and I know what you are feeling. My dream has always been to be hairstylist and make-up artist, but I always talked myself out of it thinking I would not be good at it, but it sounds fun making people beautiful and feel good about themselves. I have worked outside of home and recently late 2007 I stopped working and focused on my home business. I am a jeweler for PREMIER DESIGNS. It is direct sales/network marketing whatever you prefer to call it, I love it you are your own boss and they have a great marketing plan and plus I get to stay at home with my 5 children and still feel like I am contributing financially. I had brought it to my husbands attention about going to school for hair and his response was - go to school for Dental Hygentist, why is it that husbands think their ideas are better - why would I want to look in peoples mouths everyday! Please let me know if you are interested in hearing about Premier Designs - I think its more exciting then accounting for the time being until you get your hands into some HAIR!!

Good Luck

I know how you feel! I was a Dental Hygienist for 9 years and after being home with my son I knew I didn't want to do that ever again. Then, by sheer coincidence, I found something that changed EVERYTHING for me!

I have been a full-time SAHM to my incredible 1 year old son since he was born. It has been a blessing!! I still contribute to our family income- I am a Representative for Silpada Designs Jewelry. I leave the house for very few hours a week in the evenings and on weekends when my husband is home, so we save on childcare costs and anxiety! The rest of the time, I work from home. This has saved me!

It is a VERY profitable business! I typically average $75 an hour and make my own schedule. Browse my website below and go to the Business Opportunity section to learn more about what I do. I make GOOD money and I'm surrounded by a huge support system, along with free training from successful Silpada women, five days a week. I can even earn free vacations. It has impacted my life in an amazing way!

I wanted to share this with you as an alternative to going into the office everyday, and then giving half of your paycheck to daycare. I love this business and never want to do anything else! Visit my website and see if this fits into your life. Call me anytime ###-###-#### - I would gladly answer any questions you may have. Let me know if I can help you in any way! Did I mention it was also FUN?!?

M.,

Take a look at my website. It's a home business you can do and still be a hairstylist, accountant, etc. It is free, no products to sell, no phone calls to make. I found out about it on Mamasource. All you have to do is send people to your website which the company already has set up. I couldn't see a reason not to sign up and I also signed my kids up under me so they would benefit as well! www.mymagnoliamall.com

Thanks,

I think if you are ready to change your career to becoming a hairstylist then girl go for it and don't continue to put it off.The longer you wait you will never do what you love to do and make you happy even though you are working or whatever.I wish I would have tried to go ahead and persue what I always wanted to do but I didn't so I'm still looking for something.I may still try to do what I wanted to do for a living ,I haven't really made up my mind yet so don't wait until your baby gets older to do it.

I am a 33 sahm of 23 mo girl. I was a nail technician for 13 yrs. Your husband is right. It's a lot of hard work to build a clientel. Your looking at five years until you can afford to have a flexible position. I found that I needed to get out of that atmosphere, not to mention the harsh chemicals you deal with or stand around on a daily basis. I quit and while I was pregnant worked at getting my real estate license. You wanna talk about flexible? Work as hard or as little as you want and make a significant amount of money when you do. It's not hard to get a real estate license. It takes a whole lot less time than hair school. Trust me. I did my classes on my own time on the internet. It's awesome. I make a substantial financial contribution to my household and get to be with my daughter 99% of the time.
