My son is about 2 weeks away from the one year mark ( he was almost two mos. early just FYI)and I think my milk is decreasing. It seems to me that now that he is more active he would need more.We will sit down to a feeding and he will suck and suck but I get no let down.He never seems to mind too much,he just waits about a half an hour and then I can usually get him some.(ever since the beginning i could feel it let down and i can tell when he's swallowing.)I have tried mothers milk tea but it doesn't seem to make a difference.I have tried to give him some next step baby formula but he just spits it right out and makes a sour face. I don't blame him I think it tastes and smells awful too!Did anyone give cows milk before a year? Think it's safe?help!!

What can I do next?

If he's just 2 weeks away from the one year mark, he will be fine on regular milk. It might help to start him on 2% and then to regular milk...sometimes just to start off on regular milk is to much because the milk is too rich. But anyway, he will be fine. : )

I started my daughter on whole milk 3 weeks before her 1st b-day. I started mixing it half an half at first, but after the first week she was fine with it! I hope it helps.

I switched my son to whole milk when he was 10 1/2 months, mostly because we couldn't afford all the formula he wanted to drink. I started off slowly, mixing 6 oz formula and 2 oz milk, until he was taking just whole milk. Make sure, however, that the milk you give him is whole milk and not 2%, 1%, or skim milk. Your son needs the fat that's in whole milk for brain and body development.

i have three kids and we started giving skim milk at 9 months with all three of ours, and that was just basically because i stopped producing milk too. but they never had any adverse reactions to it...

i am shocked that mothers milk tea didn't work!, anyway, he is almost a year, and i am not familiar with preemies but my rule of thumb was to switch to cows milk 1/2 whole/ 1/2 water once they are walking, or holding their own bottle or can drink out of a sippy cup, i would however strongly recommend you go with organic milk like "horizon" that come from cows not given hormones to increase production, those hormones pass through the milk into the receiver and have health risks. plus organic tastes better, expires later, and is ethical, if you worry about that sorta thing. you could also try rice milk which has very little chance of causing allergies, i had my daughter on soy milk and oat milk before the age of one also, but soy and oat can possibly cause allergies and you should ask your doctor before trying it, good luck, and kudos to you for breastfeeding for so long!

You can absolutly start cow's milk. He is so close to one that the 2 weeks difference really is nothing. We started our son on cow's milk when he was 11 months. Obviously, we started slowly and he was still primarily drinking formula, but about 2 weeks after he turned one he didn't get any formula at all. It was all cow's milk. You don't mention in your post, but since he is almost one I assume you have started table foods and the breastmilk is no longer his primary form of nourishment. That is probably why your breastmilk is decreasing because he just doesn't need as much as he did as an infant. If you do want to try formula before milk, you don't need to use the next step. I asked my pediatrician about it and he said that the main difference between next step and regular formula is packaging and price. We kept our son on regular formula until he got milk, so your son might prefer a different type of formula. I'm not a doctor or anything, so I would say check with your pediatrician before making any changes in your son's diet, but I'm sure that cow's milk would be just fine. By the way, props to you for breastfeeding this long. I only made it 8 weeks.

I never gave my kids cows milk until they were 12 months and then I did half and half until they got used to the different taste. I would just ask your doctor and see what he/she thought about it.

I also breastfed my kids until one year old. I started giving them cows milk with their food at 9 months after I nursed them. My second daughter wea ned herself at 11 months and went straight to cows milk. Just give him a little milk and watch to make sure he doesn't have a reaction. Good Luck

He is so close to 1 that I don't think it would matter. But I would talk to your pediatrician. My oldest weaned herself at around 11 months and wouldn't take formula.

As you breastfeed more though you don't really get those sensations anymore. He is also more active and isn't nursing as much, mine did this and she just decided she didn't want to nurse anymore. My youngest is now 7 months and is still nursing but some days I don't think I have any milk but she seems fine and is gaining weight.

HI! I am also breastfeeding and struggling with milk supply. I have found that when I eat oatmeal a couple of days in a row that my milk production goes up. I don't know why, but it seems to work for me! Something else that helps is a dose or two of Reglan. I asked my OBGYN about my milk production and he prescribed Reglan for me. He suggested taking it three times a day, but I can take about one dose every couple of days and it keeps the milk flowing!

Kudos to you for keeping up the nursing for almost a year! That is so awesome! I nursed DD #1 for 13 months, but my second daughter has been a challenge. She is eight months old now, and it is sometimes a fight just to keep her interested in the breast and not on whatever else is going on in the room. She is so busy, too. I never had this problem with DD #1, which I am sure is why I never had a problem with milk supply with her. Isn't it amazing how different kids can be?

Hope everything works out for you!

My doctor let me give my son cows milk when he was turned 11 months old. I was pumping during the day because I was working and I just couldn't get any milk out. So he started having a cup of cows milk with lunch every day. My daughter will be 11 month old on March 5th and I plan on doing the same thing. She is totally not into the afternoon nursing session at all any more. She fidgets to get down and fusses the whole time. She takes a couple of sips, but that is it. That one year mark is not a magic number. I would just call up your doctor and ask the nurse. i am sure they will say OK. My "What to Expect the First Year" book says that you can start giving your baby some cows milk when you start to wean about 10 months. I hope this helps.

Congrats on bf so long!! I have been for 7 months now and still LOVE it!! :) I would say check w/your pedi and see if s/he says its ok to give cows milk and then try it.
I do eat oatmeal every morning though to help my supply. You can try any kind of oatmeal, cookies, granola bars, cereal, hot, cold. My understanding is any kind of oatmeal will help. You could also try taking Fuengreek and Blissed Thistle. You can find this at your local Health Food store for around $8 a bottle. Good Luck and congrats to bf so long, most women give up by 6 months... :)

Hello there~
Both of my boys were long nursers and both around 1 became much more active and uninterested in nursing. It was just a phase. I just offered when they needed to nurse, and other times gave them soymilk or juice from a sippy cup. If your not ready to stop nursing (I wouldnt have been when mine were 12mos)I wouldnt worry about it.. I would drink lots of fluids, possibly fenugreek from wholefoods, and offer when baby seems interested. Breast milk even at 12 mos offers so many great things.. nourishment and emotional connectedness. He will come around!

NO COWS MILK....believe it or not, its not natural! Its ver hard to digest and a baby can not take it. Neither of my babies woudl drink ANY formula...trust me I tried. They hated artificial nipples and hated formula. As you breast feed you will become accustom to it and will not feel the let down, engorgement, or pain often felt at the beginning. As long as the baby is gaining weight he is getting enough. Its natures way. If you are worried take hime to his pediatrician and have him weighed. Talk about this with his doctor and have him weighed once a week if you need to to calm your fears. YOu might also try pumping in between breast feedings. Not only will it cause you breast to fill fast becausethey think they are feeding more, but you;ll have breast milk to feed baby when you can't.
