My daughter is 13 and she wants to wear a bikini, I was hoping for some help on this issue. She and her friend are going to a indoor pool party for her friend's birthday party. I am a single mom, therefore I don't have someone to discuss this topic with. My daughter, Maria says that "All of her friends are wearing one." I decided to look up "Kid bikini's' on Google to see if there were appropriate bikini's that were okay for her age. I looked for about an hour on lots of store websites and I saw none that were age appropriate (they were too young looking). Any advice/help anyone could provide for me? Thanks. ~ M.

What can I do next?

Target has swim suits out already. Many are mix and match separates. A tankini is a good compromise.

I wore one at that age, but if you are uncomfortable with it then then get her a tankini.

If she is 13 she need to look at bikinis in her age group which is juniors.

Do you have an issue with a bikini? Bikinis have been worn for decades. You can wear a nice bikini and not have everything hanging out. Go try them on... have a day of shopping. Get something SHE feels comfortable in.

She is growing up mom and we have to cut the apron strings. When some children are forbidden from certain things.... foods, friends, clothing, makeup, etc... they will find a way to participate with what they want. So work with her and guide her.

She is 13, I am sure there are plenty of places with appropriate bikinis for her age group.. Try Junior departments at Nordstrom, Macy's, Dillards, and Major Dept stores.

Best wishes!

Well I can't speak for New York but girls and women of all ages have been wearing bikinis here in California since the 1970's.
I wore one as a child, in the 70's, triangle top and tie or ring style bottom, and I lived in IOWA!
I just can't imagine how a basic bikini like that would be in any way inappropriate in the US in 2014.

I would ask her to consider a cropped tankini. At 13, you might also just look up bikinis in junior's sizes for those that aren't too young looking, but you can veto any strings and whatevers that you don't like. My SD found out the hard way (as did I when I was a teen) that most bikini tops are not meant for an active swim. Mine flipped up in the ocean (and flashed about 100 people) and she lost her top in a lake. If she does still wear a bikini, a halter top style may be more covering and not as likely to slip off as something held on with a string.

And as far as the "all of x are y", I would talk to her about that, as a generality. I know teens want to be like their friends, but why is that her go-to argument here? Is she mature enough to wear one? Does she find them comfortable? Is she willing to consider retro or alternative styles? Etc? When we were presented with "all my friends are...." we said, "And you are not all your friends." We wanted them to think it through beyond sheep mentality. And find out also if this is because there will be boys there. Just so you know her motivations. It might influence your decision.

Teens are too big for kid sizes, she needs juniors. Other than swim team athletic sports suits, which are terribly expensive, they just don't sell one piece suits anymore. Everyone wears bikinis. That's really all that's sold anymore.

If you want to get her a nice, serviceable two piece, Title Nine Sports and Athleta both have great looking ones that are actually built for swimming. Be aware, though, that these are grown-up performance suits with grown-up suit prices. Land's End also has attractive ones, and not all of them are little kid.

If you'd prefer to talk her out of the two piece, you can share what happened to me when I was 14. I had a cute little yellow bikini - one of those with the top you could tie different ways. I went off the high dive. I plunged beneath the surface of the water. My swimsuit top stayed on the surface. And that's why I don't wear bikinis.

It depends on the kid and the suit. Not all bikinis are created equal. Some are more if a "two piece" and others are 'stringy". I think it also depends on the body of the person wearing it. Some 13 year olds are quite developed and others still look like very young girls. Most department stores will have more modest styles...if you go to teen specialty shops, they get more revealing.

Geesh...I just googled 'tween' bikinis...and most of THEM were too adult!! (at least would have been for MY taste at that age).

Not sure what you are looking for.

Very often a 'one' piece is more alluring than a bikini...if that is the look you are going for.

I wore a bikini from age 2 on up to now at 33. My daughter is 8 and she also likes wearing a bikini. I think they are more comfortable. I hate the feeling of a wet one piece or tankini on my skin. So we wear them for comfort, but they are also a lot cuter than other styles. I see nothing wrong with kids/tweens/teens wearing bikini's
