Bathing 8 Month Old--need Product Advice

Hi,

Our 8 month old baby is too big for the infant tub. The tub we bought converts into an upright seat that attaches to the side of the tub. However, you need to fill the whole tub with water to use it properly. This seems like a waste of water. I went to Babies r Us and I couldn't really find a better alternative. Does anyone have suggestions on a product that I can use to bathe our daughter that wouldn't require filling the whole tub??

What can I do next?

I got a great shower gift. It is an inflatable duck that you blow up and put in the tub. It is made by munchkin and is available at Target. My son is 4 mo old and loves it and you are not wasting all that water. Good luck!

when my son grew out of his bath tub, i started bathing him in the bathtub. lol it was cheap and he loved it! i filled the tub just enough to cover the bottom, took off my socks and we just played! lol I NEVER left him in there alone, even for a second. But now he's 3 and absolutely loves the tub and when he's playing, he's usually on his stomach or back, i think i have a little swimmer on my hands!

I must chime in on the wonderful inflatable tub - it was invaluable to us, as it didn't require filling an entire bathtub, it was portable (we were moving and combining trips - including flying crosscountry - to relative's houses in between homes), and we used it from age 8 months to age 2 years. I didn't have to worry about her tipping or slipping over and banging on the hard bathtub, the inflatable was great padding. I did put a washcloth under her tush anyway, but never had a problem.
I think I bought mine on amazon, but it could have been one of the specialty baby catalogs one of the other posters mentioned, too. It was so long ago...

i say get rid of the seat and baby tub, and just let your baby play in the big tub. if they aren't in any seat/tub, you only need to put a little bit of water in the tub, and they will be happy as clams!!!!

My third is 8 months now and she goes right in the big tub with my 2 and 4 year olds. When she was tiny - basically before her crod fell off, I used a sling in my kitchen sink. After that, I laid in her in the big tub with just a tiny bit of water. I did the same with my first 2. I hate storing the bulky baby seats and trying to keep the mildew off them so we just skipped them. I stay right there to catch her if necessary, but she's pretty stable at this point when sitting. When she first went from laying to sitting, my 4 year old usually sat behind her to hold her secure while I washed her. Then I'd take her out and dress her while the big ones played for a few more minutes.

I LOVE the Safer Bather! We used it for baths in our sink and then in the tub. We didn't have room for those plastic tub bathers, this is machine washable too. It's great for any age baby.

Personally, I don't like and never really liked the baby tubs and I also did try the tub seat, but found that to be useless too.... I did use both with my oldest for a bit, but found that in the long run, putting a wash cloth under their bum and being there holding them worked much better. At 8 months, your baby should be able to sit ok and the wash cloth should work just fine. (when my second 2 kids came along, I went straight to the washcloth and big tub. This was what my mom did with us) I never filled the tub completely either...I probably only put in 2-4 inches of water.

I know that you won't have your hands free, but you will soon as they gain stability on their own!

Good luck!

HI. I would recommend getting a no slip tub mat and let your child sit in the big tub. You don't have to fill it very much and throw in some measuring cups and play away.

I think my advice is similar to Heathers, but it worked GREAT for a little guy that I was a nanny for. From the time he was about 4-5 months old, we put a tiny bit of water in the regular big tub (I’d say about a half inch), and laid him down on his back in the tub. It was such a small amount of water that it didn’t even come up to his ears. He loved splashing around in the big tub, and as long as I had one hand on his tummy, he could scoot himself around the tub on his back (I called it "swimming" because it really looked like he was swimming). I washed him with the little bit of water that was in the tub and then completely drained it and put some fresh water (still just a tiny bit) in to rinse him off. It worked great, he loved it and I never got soaking wet like I have when using baby tubs wtih kids big enough to splash me!

Hi S.!

I found a blow up duck back tub at target that is fantastic. I think it was aroound $10.00. It will fit your daughter for quite a while and you definitely won't be wasting as much water. Hopefully that will help you.

Take Care!

Two things I would try, Get into the tub with the baby to bathe or try the sink. either way it would make you feel more secure about the situation.

Good luck,

I have what is called a safer bather. It's a big sponge pillow thing. My daughter is 6 months. My mom bought us one of those seats. In theory, they seem great, but we're going to take it back. We have no room for it and like the mom above, I think we'll use the safer bather as a seat as long as it works. Most folks I talk to use a towel or one of the sponge things rather than a tub seat. Seems like another item that seems great, but you'll never really use.

Kitchen Sink!!!! I always used the kitchen sink for my kids....they enjoyed it, and it was easier on my knees and back since I could stand up to bathe them!

Have you tried just bathing your baby in the sink? My 9 month old loves when I bathe her in our kitchen sink!

i have a six month old son and i do not like the baby tubs. i found it easier to get in the bathtub with him when it is time to bathe him. it is a nice way to bond with your baby and they really seem to be at ease when you are with them in the babthtub. my son likes to float in the water and kick his legs. i fill the tub about half way. i apologize if this goes in the opposite direction of what you are asking but i found it a lot easier this way.

My son is 9 months old and just out grew the infant tub in the kitchen sink as well (he was splashing so much, all over the kitchen). We bought one of those blow up duck tubs (that quack) and I really like it. My son is just getting good at sitting up on his own, I put a wet hand towel in the tub and behind his back to keep him from sliding down and it works pretty well. You just fill up the duck with water and I use the shower head to rinse him and his hair off. As long as he isn't able to slide down, he seems really content.

Here is a link to it: We got it at Target for $9.99.

the best - for my baby and for my back! - way for me was to get right in the tub with my little one. i did this from the time he was born until he was old enough to sit in the regular tub on his own. however, if this is just not an option for you, i also found giving baths in the kitchen sink (or laundry sink if you have one) a great option. this is a great way to use less water and you can stand and support your little one while keeping your posture properly aligned.
hope this helps!

Here's another vote for the inflatable tub that fits inside your bath tub. A lifesaver. Travels well, too. Makes a fine 'mini' splash pool, too. Loved it. And cheap too.

I agree with the mom who talked about the blow up duck tub from target. The best 10 bucks we ever spent! Our son was in it FOREVER! From the time he could sit up and was too big for the kitchen sink (I have an abnormally small kitchen sink) until close to 2 yrs I think. My husband says we moved him b/c of mobility. He couldn't move very well anymore so he started standing up to play. Our duck had an air leaking problem and we had to refill it a bit everytime we used it, but we didn't care. It was totally worth it.

Hope this helps!

This may sound odd...but my girlfriend used a plastic storage bin. She said she liked the depth of the bin and didn't have to waste water filling a whole tub. You can find various sizes at Target, Walmart, Kmart, etc. Hope that helps!
