Bassinets? Baby Moses Basket?

We are due with our third in February. We had borrowed a co-sleeper from a friend but it won't work for us. We only need something for about 4 weeks and then baby will be in the crib...if not sooner. I'm not sure if I would like a bassinet or baby moses basket. I don't want to spend a lot of money, because this is our last and will only use it for a short time. I would like to have it move from room to room. (Which our former bassinet did but the baskets look appealing.) I don't want to get one and have it be too flimsy though. Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions either way? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I bought a very nice bassinet off of craigslist and simply washed all the fabric parts well. It was awesome, on wheels, with a canopy, and I paid $25. Used it until she was 5 months (only with close supervision after 3 months)

have you tried a pack n play? Ours has a little bassinet that attaches. We used it for the first few weeks, when I was sleeping with her in the living room. It's fairly portable. We used the pack n play itself until she was 2ish.

They make smaller sized pack and plays too with a little bassinet on top. Then you can take that part off and use your pack and play for a lot longer than a bassinet. Bassinets did not work for us so we just put our babies in a swing next to our bed (a cradle swing) but you could also used a vibrating chair ( a lot of them cradle newborns) and put that in your room and you can easily move it from room to room. I plan on using a vibrating chair with this baby (since it is our third and last) with my second I borrowed a bassinet and would move it from room to room but I only used it for about two weeks so I don't want to spend the money to buy a new one.

I had felt safer with the bassinet, it's deeper and sturdier and usually on wheels. The Moses basket was shallow and I never felt too comfortable having the baby out of sight. But if you are only planning on 4 wks, doubtful the babes could get in to too much trouble. No friends or family with a bassinet to borrow? They are not terribly expensive in Buy Buy Baby or even Target, they get pricier when youwant to get all fancy. Congrats on #3.

We got a moses basket for our third. I loved it so much! We could take it absolutely everywhere! And boy did we! We didn't have a lot of room for something like a pack n play or a big bassinet. We got longer use out of the moses basket then we would have with the bassinet. Even when she got a little big for it we could still set it on the ground and have her sleep in it when we were at the park or something. We only stopped using it when her limbs were hanging out over the egdes and she moved around a lot more in her sleep.

Just wondering why the co-sleeper won't work... It's basically a bassinet, you can put the one side up if you don't like it down attached to your bed. Is it the Arm's Reach co-sleeper? That is the one I used for both of my kids and it is great! Very light, you can move it from room to room, it has space underneath for storage and when you are done using it as a bassinet, we used ours as a changing table (I bought one of those changing table mattresses and it fit right in).

If you are talking about the co-sleeper that stays on top of your mattress in between your pillows, I can see why it does not work.

I had a moses basket for my first 2 and a bassinet for my 3rd. I really was fine with both, but I think if I had to choose, I would choose the moses basket. I loved being able to carry the baby from room to room if he was sleeping. Of course, by the 3rd, I knew I didn't have to have the baby by my side every second, so the bassinet was fine. :) The good thing about the bassinet is I thought it seemed like I could use it longer. My daughter actually slept in that for almost 4 months. She slept through the night so early, I was afraid to move her to the crib and take the chance she would stop sleeping through the night. :) Congratulations on your 3rd!

I just had my 4th and have tried the Moses basket, a bassinet and a pack and play. I still go back to the bassinet. As far as cost, we did not plan on having #4 so we had no baby stuff left over from #3. I ended up going to a consignment baby store and got a really cute mobile Eddie Bauer bassinet for $50 (they are $250 in the store). I use it until they are around 3 months old too so it is all worth it to me. Then when I am done with it, I sell it back to the store I bought it from and probably get around $30 for it.

Good luck on your newest addition.

I would recommend a pack 'n play with a bassinet insert as well. They aren't as cute as a bassinet or moses basket, but they are very portable, and you can continue to use them when you travel for a long time (we still use ours for our 37-inch 2 1/2 year old, even though he is getting pretty big for it, and sleeps in a regular bed at home...)

How about borrowing a bassinet from a friend who's not using theirs right now? We did that both times - I think that bassinet has been through about 6 babies and 3 families by now! I have also seen them at kids' consignment stores.

I loved having a bassinet for my girls when they were newborns because as you say, they're so easy to move from room to room as you need to during the day. My concern with a Moses basket would be that they sit on the floor, and that would worry me with older kids, pets, etc running around. Plus right after you have the baby, stooping down to pick the baby up would be hard.

Congrats on your new baby!
