Has anyone bought a barbie doll for their 1-year-old daughter? I know they say 3+ years but there are so many toys out there that we have bought our son in the past that were recommended for much older children... and so many of my other friends do that same with their children. I am just wanting to know if your 1-year-old daughter played with the barbie not your opinion on the box age vs child's age. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I am mainly looking at getting her a barbie for the bathtub. I have looked at a lot of other "age appropriate" toys and they are all things she will not play with. She is use to playing with her brother's more advance toys so a lot of baby toys just do not appeal to her. I am not worried about accessories because I knew I would need to take any small items away before giving her the doll. I am trying to find her something for Chanukah and until Saturday Toys R Us has a buy 2 get 1 free and I have a coupon that will basically make it so I am paying for 1 barbie and get 3. Also, she has a baby doll already. Thanks for your help.

And as far as her possibly chewing on the barbie... I see it to be no different than if I had an older daughter with barbies and the 1-year-old could get her hands on them and possibly chew on them. I am not sure why that is so concerning. I'd rather her chew on the doll instead of eating sand and dirt outside like she already does when playing with her brother. I just wanted to know if other 1-year-olds have been interested in playing with barbies... I know they don't role play at this age but even just carrying them around is something.

Barbies come with teeny-tiny accessories! It's the accessories that are the problem. Babies eat them. The accessories have no nutritional value, and the the baby can choke.. If you'll wait until she's old enough to know what's food and what isn't, I think you'll be happier. There are some very nice dolls on the market that a one-year-old can really enjoy more.

My daughter found one of my old Barbies in a box when she was 10 months old and immediately adopted her. I just took off the shoes and jewelery, anything she could swallow. In the beginning I watched her like a hawk, I was worried about the sharp plastic hands poking her in the eyes. She loved it like a baby doll and we have never had any issues.

Two thoughts... small pieces and hard plastic!
Not sure why you would be thinking of a Barbie for such a young child when there are many other more appropriate and probably interesting toys for her! Unless Barbie has changed significantly, she's rigid and not much fun to play with if you aren't dressing her up.

She'll probably use it as a teether, so I would say to avoid it. My son would have played with anything I put in front of him at that age, so I would suggest picking up something that she could manipulate and explore safely!

Hi!

My daughter received a barbie for the bathtub for christmas last year (she'll be 2 next month. and we have bought her a regular barbie just because. We just made sure it was one with bigger accessories if any. the bathtub one is nice because it soft and bendable!

She doesn't put too many things in her mouth anymore so we were ok with her playing with it.

hope this helps!

I don't always follow these box age rules either. Just make sure you remove any small parts (shoes etc) from the barbie so she doesn't choke on them. Otherwise....let her enjoy it!

I have 2 daughters. My oldest is five and didn't really get into Barbie's until around 4-4 1/2. My youngest is 3 and she is sorta into them...but mostly because she likes to change the clothes and shoes.

I would stick to the little people by fisher price.

My daughter wasn't interested in Barbie at that age and the hands and feet are too pointy. There are lots of good bath toys at Toys r Us. Anything plastic that floats will work. We liked the stacking rings. They float on the water and you can thoiw things through them like a basketball goal. Also the foam numbers and letters because theys stick to the bath and the wall when wet.

Instead of a Barbie for the bath, try a Dora! My daughter got this from a friend, and she loves it. It spends time all over the house and even went to the lake with us this summer. I'm not a fan of Dora, but this doll is great.

In addition to others' thoughts, and like Krisa P. said, I'd be afraid of her chewing on the plastic. I would look into the plastic they are made of and see if there have ever been any complaints or problems with it.

I don't think there's anything wrong with buying a Barbie for a one year old. People bought my daughter dolls of all types even before she was born. However, I put them away until she was older.
Barbies have so many tiny pieces that go along with them. Even the brightest 1 year old would likely swallow a shoe, purse, button off a little jacket, or just stick Barbie's hair in her mouth.

They make really awesome "baby" dolls for little ones that don't have any hair or clothes that can be choked on. They look like little newborns. Even my son had one and we still have it. (He's 15). His little t-shirt that was given to him at the hospital when he was born is on it.

Like I said, nothing wrong with buying certain things for your kids, but I think there are age guidelines for a reason when it comes to something like a Barbie doll.

Just my opinion.

Best wishes.
