BAD Rash Help

My 10 month old baby has been pooping every diaper. Her poop seems caustic or acidic or something, because even if I change her right after she poops, her but is BRIGHT red and very tender. Well, it's been a couple of days and she doesn't poop as much but her butt is so red and tender and now has a couple of sores on it. It bleeds at time and hurts badly.

After she poops I wash her bottom in the bath and then let it air dry for about 10 minutes. After she just has a wet diaper I wipe her then let her air dry and put on destin. It doesn't seem to be clearing up and I wonder if any of you mom's know of a good cream to heal broken skin. Any help would be great!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your advice. I started with the butt paste b/c it was the fastest solution. So far, things are looking better. But I may try to make some of those concoctions if it doesn't clear up. I appreciate all your advice.

After you change and dry her bottom put good ole vaseline on her . It makes a barrier and keeps the acidity away while the skin is healing. Or Boudreaux's butt paste if the vaseline doesnt work. i had this problem with my now 4yr.old.

Bag Balm. It comes in a little green tin and you buy it over the counter at pharmacies. It works TONS better than Desitin. I swear by it.

HI A., I think you have some awesome suggestions to try out. My only advice is to use either a wet washcloth or wet papertowels to clean off instead of wipes until it clears up. I used to fold papertowels up in the morning and leave them by the sink so they were ready. Aquaphor always worked great when there was a breakout but you have to be careful with girls. If used more than three days in a row in can cause a yeast infection. Just use caution. Good luck, hope your little one feels better soon!!

I had a very similar problem with my daughter when she was younger... She is an albino and has extremely sensitive skin. First off, my mom recommended 'Bag Balm' to me. I don't know if you've heard of this, but you can sometimes find it at the pharmacy... however, it's cheaper if you buy it at a farm store (IFA). This cream is the consistancy and smells a lot like Carmex. It's made for cows utters when they become sore or infected (I know this sounds totally strange... but it's the very best diaper ointment I've ever found. Plus it doesn't hurt their skin when you apply it to broken skin like some of the other ointments do.
Also, some more advice that my mom gave me that probably helped the very most... Take her outside (hopefully you have a somewhat secluded back yard, and it's warm enough) and strip her down from the waist down...and let her run around naked for as long as she's willing. If she's not walking yet, lay down a blanket that doesn't matter if it gets ruined and just let her play in the sun. There's just something about the warmth of the sunshine and giving it awhile to dry out that really helps. These two things helped her more than anything else over the counter that I found. If it's cold outside, I would also just strip her down and lay her on my lap with a lamp shining on her little bare bottom, again, it sounds strange... but it really helped.

I hope this helps!

Hi A.
I like that name. I named a daughter A..
This sounds a little bit funny, but I had a neighbor whose dad was a vet. She was able to get some ointment for me to use when my kids had really bad diaper rash and it really helped. You might want to check with the doctor first about the condition of the poop. That could be a sign of some inner problems and ask the nurse what she would reccomend. If nothing workd there, call an animal place and ask them. They use a lot of similiar items on animals.

Hi A.,

We went through the same exact thing (bloody sores and all!)and as I've learned, most diaper rashes are actually caused by food sensitivities. I highly recommend you try an elimination diet starting by taking out dairy and wheat for two weeks and then adding one back in for a week while leaving the other out and then vice versa. That will show you what is bothering her if her rash improves with leaving one of those foods out. My guess is you will see an immediate improvement. If not, try the other big food allergens: soy, eggs, corn. The key is getting to the source of the rash and eliminating it.

My 18 mos old currently can't tolerate wheat, dairy, eggs, soy and tomatos. If he accidentily gets some in his diet his rash comes back immediately. Interesting huh?

This is something that my DH tells me to do when I am at wits end with a diaper rash. He tells me (and has to remind me every time) to put the baby in the bath with some Epsom Salts and let them soak and play (but don't let them drink the water as it can give them the runs). Then when you get them out, dry them off and make sure that they are really dry before diapering and then apply the cream of your choice and it works wonders. You can get the Epsom salts at your favorite grocery store or where ever, just ask for it. Good luck

My doctor told us about butt paste. At first, I laughed because of the name but it really works. I have also used cornstarch on the bum. When my son was younger and had a bad rash because of diarrhea our doctor told us to give him some bacteria to help stop the runny diapers. So we went to health store and got some probiotic powder and put it in his formula. It stopped the diarrhea. Good luck

It sounds as tho' she could have a yeast infection in her body
You need to get to the source of the problem, perhaps. Does she have a coated tongue? Acidophilus (good bacteria) might
be a good thing to add to her diet...there is a liquid one
in the health food stores called bio-k plus...try that for starters. As for a healing creme...try rescue creme by BACH
FLOWERS REMEDY. Emu oil or true tumanu oil may help also.

good luck

It could be more than a bad daiper rash. My son has the same problem. I took him to the pediatrician and I was informed that he had a yeast infection diaper rash. I applied the medication, which is fairly cheap, and the rash calmed down and was gone within a week or so. He still gets this every now and then, but the meds clear it right up.
The cream is called NYSTATIN Ointment. You apply it to the rash 4 times a day.
I HIGHLY suggest you go see your pediatricain and check if it's a yeast infection. If your baby's PH is higher than normal your baby will get more yeast infections than normal but the cream is wonderful.
All you're doing with the air drying and everything is great. Try to do that as much as possible, if they poop on the carpet I suggest Resolve carpet cleaner. It's a life saver:)

Hi A.,

After putting Destin on her bottom try applying Bag Balm. You can find it at Walmart in the pet section/area of the store in a green square tin. Our pediatrician recommended this for our little girl when she couldn't seem to break a rash or sores. The bag balm protects the medicine from urine or poop and allows it to work longer and protect the skin. It always seemed to help our daughters situation. Good luck, its no fun dealing with a sore bum and rashes.

Baby wipes can be very drying. Try just a wash cloth. Also, my doctor suggests dabbing malox on the bum the putting a thick coat of vasaline. The malox is an anti acid, so it pulls the acid right off the bum.

Dump a big load of cornstarch into her diaper to absorbe the poop. Coat her butt THICK with ButtPaste. It clears up rashes faster than any others IMHO. Getting her out in the sun with a naked butt might help too.

I have a great ointment that works GREAT! It is actually made from desitin. It is desitin ointment in a short fat white with yellow label. Sorry I can not think of the name right now. I got mine at Walgreens in the baby isle. It is for broken skin, scrapes, and burns( I think) I love it and it clears in up in no time. It is a little pricy but lasts for ever. I think it is around $7-8 dollars. Not bad considering the pain your little one is having. Hope that helps!
Good Luck! Let me know if it works!

What your doing sounds right, but I would try Burt's Bee's zinc oxide diaper cream. It is spendy, about $7 a tube at Target, but it is completely worth it because it works the best. It's all natural and very, very thick so it sticks to the skin great and will keep it well protected. It's the only cream I use on my own 7 month old son when he gets a diaper rash.
BYW, Jennifer above is talking about Burt's Bees as well. It is in a yellow and white tube.

Good Luck,

Have you tried Triple Paste? My daughter has really sensitive skin and the doctor recommended it when she was still in diapers. When you wash her bum do you use soap? Sometimes that can be an irritant too. I hope this helps some.

My kids get the very same thing whenever they have teeth coming in. Something about teething makes their poop acidic (their drool, too, when they are little), and if I leave it on them at all it burns them. Even when I change them immediately they get so sore and get sores like burns in their diaper areas. There is a product I can get at my local pharmacy (mine is a small drug store) called Resinol. It makes the best diaper rash cream I have ever used, and I've tried a lot. See if you can get your drug store to special order it if they don't carry it. Resinol not only has zinc oxide to act as a barrier from wetness, it also contains something called resorcinol which is a topical analgesic, which actually relieves the soreness, and it has calamine and lanolin to soothe as well. I love it. If you can't find it locally, you can get it on Amazon.com. Good luck.

I have used Aveeno diaper rash cream because it is very thick and really sticks to the bum. Then I put on top a nice helping of baby powder. This has cleared up the worst diaper rashes my kids have had...one with blisters even. Do it consistently for a few days especially at night.

I have tried endless over the counter remedies with my kids, and I have found only one thing that helps, made by my mother. To mix, you need one tube Desitin (or any diaper rash cream with Zinc Oxide as the primary ingredient), mix with one tube hydrocortizone cream 1% (over the counter for a few dollars, generic works great), and mix with cornstarch until you get a pasty consistency. Store in a tub with a lid - I usually use old butter dishes. Apply liberally. It's the only thing I have found that works for my boys!! Do make sure that it is not a yeast infection (usually characterized by raised red bumps) before you use a lot of diaper rash creams, or you will just feed the rash. :)

My baby has very sensitive skin and I have discovered that desitin actually makes it worse. She gets horrible poopy diapers like that when she's teething. My husband is a pharmacist and he made a little cream for me that works wonders. I put on CLOTRIMAZOLE and then hydrocortisone. Clotrimazole is an anti-fungal. If you use hydrocortisone by itself, it will take away the redness for awhile, but the rash will get worse. Hydrocortisone does have a steroid in it, so I only use that in the morning and at night. During the day, I rinse her bum off in the sink every time I change her. I let her dry off for about 20 minutes, then I put on some aquaphor. It's really thick and has really good moisturizers, so while it creates a barrier between her skin and her wet diaper, it won't dry her skin out. If it is really bad, I put in some maalox. I know that sounds weird, but it REALLY works! The maalox is an antacid and something about it soothes her skin immediately. The maalox and aquaphor take some doing to get it to mix together into a paste, so I use my food processor and just make a ton. If it doesn't improve in a couple of days, take her to the doctor. The prescription creams clear up anything I can't get rid of in a day or two. Good luck!

This happened so often to my first son. We would go as far as letting him "air dry" his poor little bum without a diaper for as long as we could each day. We finally figured out he had some food allergies. You may want to get your baby tested. The BEST cream we found is called "Bag Balm" (as it was intended originally for cow's udders!) but it is amazing. The scent isn't the nicest but it works great because it hos a topical antibiotic in it. The other cream that REALLY works well is a pink cream from Mary Kay called Extra Emollient Night Cream, and it really smells a lot nicer but does not contain fragrance. Try those, and good luck!

Triple paste has saved my life! It's an over the counter medicated diaper ointment, and is the only thing that has worked on my daughter's rashes. You can get it at Wal-mart for the best price, or at pretty much any grocery store. Good luck, I know rashes aren't fun!
