Babysitting Rates for Adult Sitter

My DH and I are finally, after 27 months, going to leave our daughter with a babysitter who is not a family member or close family friend. The woman is a former daycare teacher with a degree in early childhood education and I'm not sure what to pay her. She just recently left her daycare position and isn't familiar with the going rates in Minnesota so she indicated she is fine with "whatever we are comfortable with." I don't want to short change her and know that she should be paid more than $3-$5 I pay the 11 year old next door to play with my daughter while I'm trying to get stuff done at home, but I don't know what a good rate would be. Any advice on this is greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

The going rate for a nanny is $20-$25/hour. I pay my teenage babysitters $10/hour, and I would expect, were I to babysit, $12-$15/hour. Minimum going rate in a center is $10/hour, and your child is getting much more individualized care from a sitter than she would from a center.

$10-$15 a hour

I use to do alot of sitting a few years ago when I was a single mom and that's what I made, depended on the family and the children.

We pay our 21 y/o babysitter $12-13 per hour for 3 kids. 6, 3 and 21 months. We always round up. Never half-hour. I feel sometimes we should pay her more b/c she is like a Mary Poppins;) Great babysitters are hard to find!

The woman we get has an in-home daycare during the day. She also does drop in care on weekend evenings/early nights. She is CPR certified, and all the classes that are required by the state. For the three kids, when we are out for a 3-4 hr time period, we pay her $85.

We pay our 19 year old college student sitter $10 an hour. We didn't know how much was fair either, so we just asked and that was the price she gave us. I think we are all happy with the amount. Good luck and have fun on your date!

I've also found that $10-$15/hour is the going rate for college age and older, which is why we do not have a babysitter!

We had a SAHM who came into our home 2 afteroons/week, anywhere from 2-4 hours. She brought her daughter with her. We paid her $5/hour, with a minimum of $25/day. This was regular, routine daycare, though, so not quite the same thing.

I would think $8.00/hour would be good and then round up a little for final payment. This is more than minimum wage and I think fair.
