Babys Face Swelled and Red Splotches in the Sun/heat but Was Fine Inside

We were in the heat and sun several times this week as we live near the beach. His face turned red in spots and in many of the spots, there were little bumps. It didn't seem to irritate him but we removed him from the heat. Once inside, he was fine, and then when we went outside again, it happened again. The red was on face, mostly upper face and hairline. Most spots looked as if I missed some areas with sunscreen. We took him out and removed him three times and the last time, his eyes were swollen. I took him home and gave him some benadryl. The redness and bumps went away, but his eye is still a little swollen. It sounds similar to heat rash online but it says it occurs typically in folds and under clothes and he was fine everywhere else. He has been in the sun several times this year but this is the first time this has happened. Any thoughts?

Did the spots look like hives? My son gets hives whenever he is cold. It took us months of allergy testing etc..to figure out what was causing it. Sometimes his whole body would break out and other times just his cheeks or a hand or a foot. We finally figured out it was whatever body part of his was cold would break out and as soon as we warmed him up, they went away. The reason I am bringing this up is because in doing the research about it, I found the same can happen once a baby gets too warm. It isn't a heat rash and he didn't get them until he was almost a year old. The good thing is, usually they will grow out of it.

sounds to me like the child may be sensitive to direct sunlight. no, dont cloak the child in garlic, just keep him out of direct sunlight.a trip to the doctor would probably be a waste of time and money, and of course if you take the child in with a swollen eye, you get to look forward to a nice friendly visit from your local social worker.when you do have to take the child outside get the strongest sunscreen you can find and a big hat and keep him cool.

Look up Keratosis Pilaris on the internet. My son has it and it gets much worse out side when he gets hot.

The eyes being swollen does sound like some sort of allergic reaction...the spots could be a sign of allergic reaction also. My husband gets itchy and splotchy red spots on his face and his eyes swell when he is having an allergy attack.

Hi J.. I am sure it will go away quickly whatever it is? In the meantime, I would consider the following:
Did maybe he get a little sunburn on his eyelids?
Allergy to sunblock (did he rub in eyes)?
Heat rash?
Reaction to sand?

some thoughts:
Use a SPF hat?
sunglasses?
wash his eyes frequently in mineral water at the beach

GL and what comes with kids, goes fast.
