Baby with a Fever but Nothing Wrong with Him

Yesterday my 5-month-old son had a fever of 101. We took him to the doctors and they said he didn't have an ear infection and that his throat was fine. They said he might have just had some stomach bug. We think he is teething but the doctor said babies don't usually get a temp that high ... maybe in the 100. something but not 101. Has anyone had this happen and do you think this could be him teething? The temp is gone today and he seems like his old self again. Also, yesterday I wasn't feeling that good but feel better today.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for everyone's advice. My son's first tooth cut through yesterday so I beleive the temperature was due to teething. Thanks again.

Hi M.,
When my son was 11 months old he came down with a high temp. The doctor said his ears and throat were fine. A day later when his temp spiked to almost 104, we brought him to the ER, where they told us that everything was fine and he just had a virus. About 2 days after that his temperature was back to normal but he broke out with a rash all over his stomach and neck, and when we brought him to the doctor again, we found out it was roseola, a very common virus among infants and toddlers.
Good luck!

The same thing is happening with my daughter, she is 1 year old now and started teething at 4 months old and shortly there after she got her first 4 teeth at the same time. Now she has 20 teeth, she is literaly cutting 12 teeth at the same time, they keep popping out like popcorn. It seems that whenever she cuts more than 2 teeth at a time she gets a high fever any where between 99 and 101 and sometimes vomits. This lasts for just one day, by the next day she is her old self again, no fever, nothing. Like nothing was wrong with her. When this happens I just give her infant Motrin and give her lukewarm baths, and rock her to sooth her back to sleep. When I asked my doctor about this, she said it was possible it could be her teeth, because my daughter was not exposed to anyone who was sick. I must say though, that whenever she gets "sick" like this I feel sick also, but I think thats just my nerves, because I hate to see her in pain, I feel so useless. They say that some babies get ear infections when ever they cut teeth, I think anything is possible, every baby is different and I think my daughter just gets high fevers and vomits when cutting teeth. Your son is probably going through the same thing as my daughter is. Glad the teething thing is almost over with my daughter. Good luck to you. Hope this helped you feel a little better.

When a baby has a high fever that isn't accompanied by a runny nose, a cough, vomiting, or diarrhea, figuring out what's wrong can be difficult. There are many viral infections that can cause a fever and no other symptoms. Some viral infections, such as roseola, cause three days of very high fever followed by a light pink rash on the trunk. More serious infections, such as meningitis, urinary tract infections, or bacteremia (bacteria in the bloodstream), may also trigger a high fever without any other specific symptoms. If your baby has a high fever and no other symptoms, call the doctor.
When to seek medical advice

Fevers by themselves may not be a cause for alarm — or a reason to call a doctor. Yet there are some circumstances when you should seek medical advice for your baby, your child or yourself.

For infants
An unexplained fever is greater cause for concern in infants and children than in adults. Call your baby's doctor if your baby:

Is younger than 2 months of age and has a rectal temperature of 100.4 F or higher. Even if your baby doesn't have other signs or symptoms, call your doctor just to be safe.
Is older than 2 months of age and has a temperature of 102 F or higher.
Is a newborn who has a lower-than-normal temperature — under 95 F rectally.
Has a fever and unexplained irritability, such as marked crying when you change your baby's diapers or when he or she is moved. Some infants might have a fever and seem lethargic and unresponsive. In infants and children younger than age 2, these may be signs of meningitis — an infection and inflammation of the membranes and fluid surrounding your brain and spinal cord. If you're worried that your baby might have meningitis, see your doctor right away. Don't wait until morning to see your usual physician — meningitis is an emergency.

My 6 month old had the same thing about two weeks ago. No symptoms but fever of 101. About a week later she did come down with a cold. Not sure if they were related. My pedi said it could be teething as well.

Yes, my daughter had her teeth coming in and for 2 days she had a fever for 101, we did everything to keep it down. Then the unthinkable happened, she woke up one morning having a seizure. I was soo scared and thought that she had brain damage or something was really wrong.. When the EMT'S arrived they assured us that this was a febrile seizure and normal in babies. What happens the fever goes from already high to higher too fast and a babies brain cannot handle that. She had gone from 100 to a deathly 104, thank God we called 911. She is ok but everytime she gets a fever we do everything to keep it down, from prescipted Motrin to cool bath, to popsicles. She hasn't had one since then but am told she can until age 5.. So watch the fevers when teething.

Hi M.,

It could be teething or it could be a stomach bug like the doctor suggested. My son who is 22 months was running a fever that ranged between 100.7 and 101 for Saturday and Sunday. His 2-year molars on the top are getting really close to break through - you can see his gums getting all swollen. All weekend he kept on rubbing his top jaw and was chewing on everything. We know it wasn't an ear infection as he just had his ears checked on Friday. He's fine now. Other things to look for with teething is increased drool or chewing, possible loose stools or constipation, inflamed gums, possible decrease in appetite, etc. Every child is different, so even if it's not the norm for the temp to be 101 when just teething, it is still a possibility. Teething begins with some children as early as 3 months, with the first tooth appearing as early as 4 or 5 months in some children. You just need to keep an eye on all the symptoms, and from there, decide if you think he really was teething, or if it was the bug the doctor suggested. If you weren't feeling so hot, the doctor could be correct in that it was a stomach bug. Have either of you been around sick people, or even gone out to eat, or shopping in the days preceeding this? There are so many germs out there that it's possible you or your son could have picked something up while out running errands. There is the chance that it is also a combination of the two. If your son is teething and got a stomach bug on top of that - chances are he'd have a higher temp because his body is reacting to both the teething and the bug. Hope this helps and glad to hear that both you and your son are doing better today!
