Baby Wearing: Toddler Carriers

Hi
I used a sling quite a bit when my son was younger and currently use the hip hammock because I watch another child. I also use it in the store as well. The problem is he wants to be held a lot. This is especially true when we run errands such as grocery store etc. I think he would really like being in a carrier on my back. I have started looking and to my surprise there are a lot out there. Can you share with me your experiences with different carriers. My son is 15 months about 20 lbs. I am small framed and 5'3. I would love one that can work in the front and back and possibly on the hip.
Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

J.,

I have an almost 17 month old who is about 23 pounds and I use the Maya wrap all the time. It can be used a number of different ways although I find the Hip Hold and the Hike Hold the best. I used it in downtown Chicago last week for over 2 hours with no issues and it was a lifesaver in the airports when we went on vacation. It is ideal for busy areas where the stroller is a nuisance or cumbersome (or if your daughter just hates the stroller like mine.) I only wish I would have found it sooner as you can use it from a newborn up to 35 pounds.

I also love the ergo. I have a 14 month old and she loves being in it in the front or back position. I don't use the hip position all that much, but she likes that too. And her weight is distributed so well - my shoulders or back never hurt when I wear her. It's also been a great way to get her to take naps when we're out and it has a sleep hood to support her head when she falls asleep. Lots of online stores sell it.

HI J.,
The Patapum is nice and the Ergo and they are both about the same price. The Ergo has cuter designs.
I think the store Tink Tinks in Evanston sells the ergo :)

I LOVE my BECO!!!!
My daughter is 9 months and about 20 pounds. I could probably wear her all day in the BECO.

The other carrier that get s awesome reviews is the ERGO.

They are very similar, the only reason I chose the BECO is because they come in much prettier prints.

Babyhawk Mei Tai carriers are great if different peopple or different babies will be sharing them because you get a custom fit every time you put it on

Good luck

I am a big time baby-wearer...even wore my twins together for a while (2 slings, criss-crossed once they were big enough for hip carry, together in a sling when they were little peanuts). Now that they're bigger, I don't put them on together much at all, but I do still make use of carriers to get through the day. I've used the ergo and liked it, but found it bulky to carry around and a bit cumbersome generally. I love the mei-tei style that allows front, back and side carry and is tied on for a good fit regardless of your size or your baby's. I got mine from a local woman who makes them custom with your choice of fabric. Check out rosiebaby.com for her current selection. Also, I think be ba baby (or something like that) at Lincoln and Roscoe has a good selection of carriers and slings that you could try.

MY 15 month old is 25 lbs and I use the ergo all the time. It is the most comfortable carrier I've found and I've tried a lot of them....
Be By Baby at Lincoln/Roscoe/Paulina carries it and they are really helpful there and know their stuff.

Hi J..

There are a lot of options for you to be able to carry your 15month old!
I would suggest a Mei Tai (MT) or even, you can learn to utilize a wrap. If you have not done so already, take a look at www.thebabywearer.com There is a ton of information there regarding the different carriers.
Also, there is a babywearing group in Lake County (has just started) and one in Chicago. You can join their yahoo groups for further information. However, if you are interested in the Lake County group you may contact me as I am one of the contact persons for the group.
