Baby's Skin

My son (6 months) scratched his eye area a while ago and now has dry looking skin in that same area (I dont know if the two are related). The skin is scaly and peels off easily. Almost like cradle cap. Now it has creeped around his other eye. He looks like he's wearing a mask!!! I have used some lotion and some oils on it...nothing worked to clear it up. Any thoughts as to how I can get this to go away. He also has small extremely dry ecsema patches in different areas of his body. What to do???

What can I do next?

Have you tried Renew lotion? It works wonders on eczema and other skin problems. Let me know if I can help you get some.

I agree that it is probably excema. We use the Aquaphor as well and really like it. It is greasy but seems to soak in fairly quickly and if you put in on before bed that helps. I havne't had a problem with it staining anything. If he has excema in other places then it's probably just more of the same, but it definitely could be an allergy issue. I would take notes of new foods he's eating, changes in diet, laundry, whatever. Two of the biggest culprits for excema so young are milk and wheat, but his rash would have to fairly severe for that. I would talk to your ped next time you go in, until then just try and be observant and troubleshoot it. I wouldn't be too worried.

Aquaphor is really great for clearing up the dry patches. It is really greasy though. I use Aquaphor when the patches are really bad, then I use Eucerin for prevention in problem spots.

My son is two now and he's had eczema since he was about 4 months old. I tried so many things over the past 2 years to help it too! (aquaphor, 3 different eucerin creams, aveeno lotion, aveeno bath, aveeno body wash, baby lotion, baby oil, cortizone creams...lots!!) It usually gets better in the summer, maybe the sun is good for it? But what i found that worked the best is using ONLY dove products in the bath, making sure he's completely rinsed with new clean water (to avoid soap residue) and making sure to put cortizone10 eczema cream or aveeno lotion on him immediately following his bath (within 2 mins), and sometimes i go so far as to apply aquaphor on top of that just to hold in the moisture. I should note that most of the products i tried DID work for temporarily-some longer than others-but eventually they lost their effectiveness. I hope you get it figured out soon and it doesnt take you as long as its taken me! Also you might try googling "eczema treatment" just to see what you get. good luck.

Both of my girls have dry, dry skin. I found some Shea butter that works really well for the dry, scaly patches that they used to get! www.herban.net We met the owner at the San Francisco Flower Show and sampled her products and we just adore the shea butter. My little girls use it on their faces and the scaly patches have gone away. It's all hand made with organic ingredients, which I like.

Sylvia,
We are struggling with the same problem with our grandson. He is 4 months old and has dealt with it since he was 2 months old. We are trying everything also. Something with zinc would definitely be a plus. Since you are in the US, I would also find something that you could use something with Primrose oil. My mother always used Primrose oil in her regiment for her eczema. It was in a pill form. But hopefully you can find it in a way that is useable in a cream.
My best to you and hopefully we can both figure out what to use to make it better for both of them.

That sounds like ecsema, and this most definately sounds like an allergy. Does he look like a little racoon? Does he have patches behind his ears? Whatever solids you've started him on (of ir you're BFing, it's probably something you ate), he's allergic to. Get him to the pediatrician for RX allergy meds and get a referral for a pediatric allergist. My daughter had this for TWO WHOLE YEARS, we finally saw an allergist, and she has a whole bunch of relatively severe allergies. Once we changed her diet and got her on daily allergy meds, her eyes cleared right up.
