Baby Sounds

It's gas!!! Go to the store and buy some infant gas relief. My baby never cried; only grunted. My doctor said that is was normal and that she was just learning how her body works. I couldn't take it anymore so I bought infant gas relief. The first time I gave it to her air just push right up out of her belly! Then at night time I put her to sleep in her infant seat so that she wasn't sleeping flat. 6 months later and not a single grunt. I didn't want to give her little body any medicine, but now I am so glad I did and i wish that i had done it sooner.

My son was a grunter too... very noisy! I knew that he wasn't constipated so I didn't worry & after a few months, he stopped.

Hi R.! My 2 1/2 month old was a grunting fool at 1 month (and still is). I suggest you check out Patricia Dunstan's "Baby Language" DVD. It's pricey so you may want to buy it used, check it out of your local library, or see if any of the info is posted online. It sounds a little weird but I found it to be VERY helpful. She lists about 6 different sounds (Eh, Nah, Ow, that sort of thing) that babies make and deciphers what they mean. I discovered that about 90% of the time my baby was making an "eh" sound (which means "I need to burp") and lo and behold, my little guy really DID need to burp WAY more often than I imagined. I started burping him more frequently and he was immediately happier.

My son used to make grunting sounds a lot. I was worried he was going to be an angry baby. Later, I found that he did it when he was hungry. He doesn't grunt anymore though.

If it's random and often, maybe he's just learning to make the sound. Babies like to repeat the same sound over and over when they're learning it.

Maybe you'll see a pattern like with my son and grunting when he's hungry.

Our little guy was a champion grunter (would wake us up and everything) until he was about 4 1/2 months old. Then he just stopped. Something to do with their digestive systems needing to mature--some babies grunt. A lot. It's annoying, but I promise it will pass and eventually your little fellow will show you why the expression "sleeping like a baby" exists. Now our little guy is so quiet it freaks me out sometimes. We first-time mommies are never happy, it seems! :)

My son was a loud grunter too. The doctor said that it was because his stomach muscles were not strong enough to move around the little air bubbles in his stomach. She told me that it would subside around 4 months when his muscles gained a little more strength...it did.

Don't be nervous. My son also made grunting sounds -- as well as hiccups -- and they turned out to be nothing. My doctor wasn't concerned and just said that they make all kinds of noises at that age. Enjoy them for the moment because this time passes so quickly. Pretty soon you'll be praying for those grunts to replace the yells!

if shes turning red in the face and tensing he may be constipated. has your baby been passing stools? even if he has runny stools he could be constipated. if your baby hasnt had a normal poop in 3 days i would suggest taking him to see his dr. but if he seems to be normal in every way and poops fine then he is probably just making it known he can do a new sound :)

It's amazing how loud babies really are :o) Enjoy these fun and funny noises/sounds, they are fun and will stop so soon. Lots of sneezes and hickups too I'm sure!? :o)

Hi R.,....My little guy was a grunter too. He may be trying to pass gas. His little digestive system is not fully functioning,...so it's very difficult for them. They don't understand whats happening in their tummies and so he may cry from discomfort. There is one thing I found that helped,...doing the bicycle leg kick thing. Stand at his feet and grab one foot in each hand and move his legs like he is riding a bike (bend them and push one at a time toward his belly),...occasionally push both together toward his belly (ball him up). This helps move the gas bubbles around and release some of the pressure. My son is now 11 weeks old and he doesn't grunt anymore, but still has some trouble passing gas and I continue to do the bicycle thing. I too am a first time mom,...trying to figure this all out. I have twin boys and one was VERY noisy. He grew out of it. Every baby is different. If he doesnt look uncomfortable when he makes the sound it could just be he likes to grunt. I wouldnt worry too much about it.

My son is 21 months now and I used to call him grunty boy! He was so loud at night when he was sleeping I would push the bassinete into the hallway. Very normal!

I am also a new mom. My son is two months old and since he was born, he makes all kinds of sounds that worry me and my husband. I plan to ask his new pediatrician at his next appointment to find out if its normal. I am sorry that I dont have any advice for you but once I get any from his doctor, I can email you.

Is he having BM's? Baby's make funny little noises at this stage, we had one that squealed like a piglet when she was a newborn, it was very funny! At first it worried me, but all was normal.

They might just be his noises if he is having BM's.

A girlfriend of mine just text messaged me about this one (among many other things)! She's a nervous new mommy too :) Yes, grunting sounds are normal. My son would stretch and make a noise like he needed to be oiled :) Relax and enjoy the ride! This is only the beginning of many new discoveries and adventures! Congratulations!

Congratulations on your new little one. Many babies grunt. Unless he looks distressed and is crying and screwing up his face he is fine. If he was constipated he probably would cry or seem terribly uncomfortable. My sons liked to be put on my knees across my legs so the tummy was on the legs and rocked or bounced a little. If it is gas, that seemed to help.

That's what babies do. I liked it at night, because I could hear them breathing... and knew they were ok.

My son grunted all the time as an infant. My first baby didn't do it at all, so we were surprised, but it was nothing to worry about. Just a sound he made.
