We took our daughter to the emergancy room on Saturday morning really early; because she was having a trouble breathing from being congestied and a high fever... After being there for 5 hours they told me she had a cold and MAYBE strep... MAYBE I do not know how they get maybe... The highest her temp got was 102.5 and while we where there they gave her motrin and it went down.. But when we were discharged from the hospital the oncall dr. prescriped 4 things... A antibiotic,a cough & congesstin med, tylenol & motrin.. They said I can give her all of them together... But everytime I have given her the tylenol she throws up but not with any of the other meds.. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO... Any suggestions?? I am calling her regular doctor today when they open... But I have also stopped giving her the tylenol.... Anyone else have this problem with tylenol??? PLEASE HELP!!!!!

What can I do next?

tylenol is known for making babies nauseated. Just give her the motrin. If you feel the need to switch you can put a little of the suspension liquid in her milk or juice, but don't give it with the motrin.

My daughter does as well. She was given the Cherry flavor and threw up. The other thing was maybe the combo of the motrin and tylenol was a bit much for her stomach. Try giving to her with some milk or formula. Good Luck :)

tylenol shouldn't upset her stomach, however the antibiotic could be making her nausious or the motrin. if you're sure it's the tylenol take her to the doctor to get allergy tested and discontinue use until then.

My son spikes crazy high fevers alot. The only thing that ever keeps them under control after he hits 103 is layering tylenol and motrin. When she is taking the tylenol, is it on an empty tummy? also what about the flavor of the tylenol? and is her fever staying down with out the tylenol, if it is under 100 with just the motrin, I would call my regular Dr and talk to him/her about leaving out the tylenol, it's not an anti-inflamitory like the motrin, so I would think it would be ok. Also ask about the symptoms of an allergy to tylenol, the first allergic reaction is not usually a serious one, but the 2nd one can be fierce.

GET A SECOND OPINION!!!! You don't give Tylenol and Motrin at the same time. There needs to be a gap of at least 2 hours in between. . . preferrably 4 hours. Does the decongestant have acetemenefin in it? If so, don't give that with the Tylenol either. The acetemenefin that is in the Tylenol isn't the greatest for your liver, so if acet. is also in the decongestant, there may be a slight over-dose effect. I would definately talk to your regular doctor.

As for "Maybe" having strep, they may not have the ability to test the cultures in the ER. Some places must send them off and don't get the results for a day or two. They just put you on antibiotics "just in case". That is standard practice in small hospitals.

I sure hope your little one gets to feeling better. But please, see someone you trust as soon as possible!!!!!

I recently heard that there is a problem with "metal fragments" accidentally getting into many batches of generic, store-brand acetamenophin. Are you giving her "Tylenol" brand specifically?
Also, I've always heard that you can ALTERNATE Tylenol with Motrin every 3 hours. I've NEVER heard of giving Tylenol & Motrin at the SAME TIME. I'd get a second opinion on that part. Or at least ask a pharmacist.

At 14mo. I don't know that I would be giving her all of those meds together (I am not Dr. but just my opinion). I have a 4yo and 2 1/2 yo and I have never been told to give them 4meds at one time. I would for sure call your Dr. office....another thing you can do if your Dr. does not have an after hours service (most do) is call a Walgreens Pharmacy. Find one that is open 24 hrs. and talk to a pharmacist about all the meds. I have done tylenol and then 4hrs. later done the motrin (my Dr. reccomendation). It is very possible that your daughter is just allergic to something in the tylenol. I would definately call your Dr. office this morning and get her in so they can see if she does have strep or not. Good luck, I hope she gets better soon.

I never gave my daughter Tylenol because it always made her vomit. She is about to turn 13 years old and to this day I only give her Motrin. Perhaps some people are just allergic to Tylenol. I know that my mother refuses to take it because it makes her very ill as well. Hope this was helpful.

she may be sensitive to the Tylenol. Back off until you talk to the Dr. Keep up the Motrin. You might try giving her some crackers or whatever you can get her to eat about 10 min before giving meds unless it says empty stomach. Some little ones have very sensitive stomachs. Hope she feels better. Remember that dehydration is your biggest risk here. Keep her sipping water, juice, pedialyte popcicles, ice from Sonic (my kids always love that especially when they are sick), also Sonic makes juice slushes now and the kids will love that plus it will help hydrate her.

Also, be sure to wash your hands alot. Keeping new germs from getting to her now while she is sick is important. Lysol everything you can. Spray the phone, her toys at least once a day, chairs, tables, any hard surface she comes in contact with that Lysol won't hurt. During cold season I Lysol my house every other day. If someone is sick I do it more often but maintenance is the key. Our colds and viruses have not been as frequent or as long as most people and I think it is because I control the germs on a regular basis. Things like electronics are hard to Lysol so either buy the wipes or spray a cloth and rub things down. Secondary infections while the immune system is down with one thing is what makes things seem like they take forever to get over. You should carry wipes when you go to the store and wipe down the cart where she can touch before and after you use it also. In my microbiology class I cultured three grocery carts and all three of them grew dangerous bacteria!!!! Pens on chains did too, never use them as it is easy to carry your own (plus you know where they have been!).

good luck

Okay, feel free to check with your doc for what I'm telling you, but it is perfectly fine to double up on tylenol and motrin. They are different drugs. You can give them at the same time, but usually stagger them so that you have lingering effects of one before you give the other. My 3 yr old has been sick all weekend, while we were at my parents' house. My dad is a doctor (family practice -- yes, babies too!) and my son had the high fever. He started throwing up. Dad said it was due to the drip from congestion, dripping down to his tummy. He doesn't know how to spit yet. Trust the doctor -- they know what meds to take and not take. The only reason these moms are freaking out is because they were told to stagger tylenol and motrin-- I'm sure they never asked why. each one works 4 to 6 hours. If you give rotate them every 2 to 3 hours, then your kid never goes without pain meds/fever reducers. Makes sense, right? By the way, I just gave my son a dose of tylenol on top of motrin. The antibiotic is for a bacterial infection. Decongestant is for congestion and stopped up nose (the Dm in the pediatex) plus sedation so she'll sleep, and motrin and tylenol for fever and feel better. Again -- trust your doctor. They are well trained, and really do know what they are talking about. For them, this type of medicine is VERY basic -- most kids get it this time of year.

I have a 10 yr old daughter, a 8 yr old son, five cats, a dog, and a fish. When I had my son he was sick a lot when he was little and he had the same problem with the tylenol. And I told the dr and he told me that my son was allergic to it. So to this day I don't even keep it in my house and I always carry mortin or bayer with me on trips.
