Hi ladies:

I'm going to a baby shower tomorrow where a group of us, including the hostess, pitched in for a gift card.

My question is do I have to bring an additional gift?

I feel funny going in empty-handed.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. I bought a card and told her to have a "very Pottery Barn" first year with baby.

Pottery Barn is where the group of us got the gift card.

I still felt kind of funny and saw other gifts but realized that they may be from people who didn't go in on the gift card or perhaps were closer to the mom-to-be than me.

I think next time I will opt out of going in on a gift card and just bring my own gift. Who knows if the person I paid remembered to acknowledge me since I didn't get to sign a big group card!

Yeah, I would feel weird without an actual "gift", per se, which is why I don't like gift cards. If you want to, bring a pack of diapers, or wipes, or outfit for the baby.

I always bring a pack of diapers and wipes to a baby shower, even if I'm hosting. It's just a standard thing I bring. You could get a pack of diapers and put a ribbon on it, if you really feel weird. However, it's absolutely not expected for you to bring an additional gift.

I would bring a small token gift. But if you don't that is ok too.

An additional gift? Of course not!
I'm assuming there's a card listing all who contributed to the gift card?
If so, you're all set!

It's solely up to you, you're not obliged to since you've bought a gift already by pitching in for the gift card.

I went to a baby shower and on top of the gift (or in place of) everyone was asked to bring their favorite baby book.

I am going to a baby shower in April. The shower is for the daughter of my best friend who passed away last June. Before she passed, we had many conversations about bridal and baby shower etc. Deb said she would buy the crib. Debs daughter is like my own, therefore, we bought her the crib.
Obviously, it will not be at the shower. I will go get her something else, crib related so I do not walk in empty handed. So I guess we are all the same.

Empty handed is fine. Or bottle of wine if it is at someone's house.

You may be walking in empty-handed, but you're not going to her shower giftless.

You don't have to bring an additional gift. You might want to bring a card, however, if you like.

I'd pick up a pretty card and write her a thoughtful note about what a great mom she's going to be and how happy you are to be sharing this experience with her.

Perhaps mention the group giftcard by saying something about how you hope the gift from all of you helps her pick up all those special baby items only mommy can choose.

I'm sure the "mom" won't even notice what you actually come to the shower with. I know I didn't when I had mine.
Although, I loved anyone who gave me diapers and wipes for my baby shower. So if you feel the need to bring something......

I would feel the same way. Maybe find a nice lotion, candle, etc., or something for mommy since most baby shower presents are baby-oriented. It won't break the bank and it'll surprise the mom.

If I was particularly close to the person, I might bring a little some extra special that is just from you.. However, IF you are on a budget , then no.. don't do it.. no one is worth your getting into debt over..

For me it would depend on how much I went in on the gift card. If everyone pitched in $10 for the gift card but I normally spend $25 to $30 I would bring something else extra along. It does not have to be anything big. I love the idea of new baby books for baby. or diapers and wipes. but I also would mention in the card that I hope she can get something she needs with the gift card from all of you.
