do any other nursing babies kind of shiver when they eat?? it usually happens when he falls asleep while nursing. he only shakes for maybe 5 seconds. it's happened maybe 6 times in two weeks. i'm wondering if this is something i need to call the doc about.

EDITED TO ADD: when he shakes it's kind of a head n shoulders thing, sometimes it gets to his legs. and since i was pregnant with him, i have not wanted sweets nearly as much as before, so i guess you could say my diet is low sugar.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

well, i've asked lots of ladies, and it seems to be a rather 'normal' occurance, albeit a frightening one. if it gets worse i will probably call the doc, but they are very mild shakes i guess.

thanks and hugs to all the ladies that took time to respond

I have not heard of that happening before. You might want to tell your pediatrician when you go for the 6 mo check. Your low sugar diet should not effect the baby. He might just be having reflexes. I would worry if he is doing while he is awake and asleep. Do you ever try stimulating him while he is eating and then letting him fall asleep after nursing? What happens then? I hope that you figure things out and feel better after reading this.

Hi N....I have a 7 month old son, who was born 8 weeks premature. So his adjusted age is the same as your baby. Anyways, I called the dr. about the same thing not 2 weeks ago! But Benjamin does it when nursing, when being held, while playing. He stiffens up, slightly, then his head or one arm will suddenly start shaking. I was afraid, because of his prematurity, that there was seizure activity going on. The NP I spoke with said it is common and most parents automatically think seizure activity, but that it's more than likely a startle reflex. She did advise me to keep an eye on Benjamin, and that if it continues to occur on a regular basis, or increases, that I should call her back and they will set up an appointment for him, with a neurologist. The more I see him do this shaking thing, the more I think it is just the startle reflex she was talking about. Hope this helps.

Hi N.,

I'm wondering if your little guy is doing this shivering thing when he's falling in to a deep sleep. I'd notice my babies kind of quiver or twitch in their facial muscles, but that was about it. Is his whole body shivering?

At any rate, I'm sure it's probably nothing, but since you noticed it, I'd be inclined to run it past the doctor. Good luck and keep us posted.

When my friend nursed her son he would shake during and or after some feedings. It turned out that she was consuming to much sugar in her diet. So it could be something that you're eating or it just maybe nothing. I have seen babies on formula also doing a little twitching type thing during feedings. I personally wouldn't put to much into thought into it unless it becomes more frequent and last longer and the jerks become stronger.

wow I am glad to hear you responses allc ame back normal. My little guy did the same thing whenhe was that age. He was a premmie so I worried about everything with him. The dr never found anything wrong. I had no idea other babies did that. To bad for me I did not have mamsource when he was little. Thanks for putting it out there for other new moms. It scared me crazy when mine did it.
Have fun with your little one,
