Baby Scale Needed

Hi Moms -

Does anyone have a baby scale they would be willing to let me borrow or rent for a month or two? (Or buy cheaply) I have a 7-week old and have had milk supply issues from the start. I have been working very hard with lactation consultants and doing everything under the sun to get the production up, but have had to supplement in the meantime.

He is now gaining weight with the supplements (he wasn't when on BM alone) so the doctor doesn't see him to check his weight as frequently. They let me take him to the office to just plop him on the scale, but it would be nice to have something at home so that I can weigh him before and after a feeding to see what he's taking in (to see if my milk is increasing), and also check his general weight gain periodically.

I am willing to drive to pick a scale up. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

This doesn't really solve the weighing issue, but if you pump, you might be able to increase your milk production. You will also be able to see how much he is taking if he takes it out of a bottle.
Good luck!

You can rent a scale by the week or month. I rented one from a pharmacy about a mile from my house that I found on the medela website: http://medela.findlocation.com/

You need a scale that's accurate to the ounce in order to get exact results. I think some lactation consultants rent the scales now, too, so if you are working with one you might ask her.

Best wishes and congratulations on your new baby! I had the same problems with my first baby and it was very comforting to get some concrete answers about how much he was getting. I had to supplement with formula for him, but had an easier time of it with my second baby. I'm glad I made the effort even though it was h*** o* me - even if he's only getting half his calories from breastmilk, he's still getting all those great nutrients and immune benefits, and I really enjoyed the closeness of nursing both times around.

I have one that we bought for the same reason. It was brand new in January and we only used it a few times. Would be happy to let you borrow it. We live in La Grange, so not sure if you want to travel that far.

Hi,

I saw a baby scale listed on the Chicago Freecycle board. This is a messaging board where people give stuff away they no longer want. I have cut and pasted the posting below. You can sign up on freecycle.org (pick Chicago location) or http://groups.yahoo.com/group/chicagofreecycle, or I can provide you with an email address for the person if you contact me.

"OFFER: Baby scale, needs spring replaced (60618)
This is a re-post. I have a "Weigh-to-Grow" baby scale that converts to a toddler scale that I got from another generous free-cycler. It needs to have a spring replaced, and I'm just not likely to get around to it. Let me know if you're interested. Pick-up near Belmont & Western."
