Hopefully someone can help me with this odd question, My 6 month old son prefers to nurse only from my right side, this started about 2 1/2 months ago, now my milk supply has gone down tremendously on my left side. The thing that bothers me is now my right breast is a lot bigger then my left, My question is when i'm done breastfeeding in a couple of months will they go back to being the same size?

What can I do next?

M.,
I have the same problem. I am currently nursing my third baby who is almost 3 months old. She is starting to refuse my left side. My 1st stopped nursing on the one side completely when she was 6 mos old and my 2nd stopped when she was 9 mos old. Both of my older girls nursed until they about 18/19 mos old.
Yes my left side is considerably larger while nusing but they do even out when I am not nursing.
Have you tried nursing on the undesirable side laying down. That is one of the only ways that I can get my 3 month old to nurse on my lt side right now.
Good luck! Don't let anyone convince you that you have to stop nursing because of this! Your baby can get all the milk it needs from the one side. My children are healthy living proof of that!

Hi M. - Kudos to you for sticking with Nursing. It's such a wonderful choice you've made. Yes, your breaasts will go down when you're done nursing. (Unfortunately, though, they will never be the same as they once were, so "down" is quite literal! Ha Ha - it's a small price to pay for all the wonderful nursing sessions you've shared with your son.)

Say, have you tried the football hold on the left side? He may just prefer laying on one side, rather than have a preference in your breasts. It's not good to have one breast providing a majority of the milk. Also, are you starting him on the left side each time? They usually drink more heartily from the first one.

Best of luck to you!

My third child only nursed on one side (don't remember when that started but I want to say pretty early) and I know my girlfriend has the same issue w/ her now 7 mo. I nursed mine for about 14 mos that way. They go back to 'normal' once ur done nursing and baby does fine that way. Good luck and good for you for nursing!

M., my name is Dr. Rick Semlow. I am a chiropractor in Troy, MI. If a mother brought her child into my office with that compliant, I would certainly want to examine the child's neck to evaluate for any misalignment of the upper neck bones.
If the neck bones are out of place, there will be restriction of movement to one side (hence, the child might perfer one breast over the other)

Not knowing the history of your child I can't tell you if that is the problem or not.

There are several great chiropractors around your area.

You can find a chiropractor who is board cerified in pediatric chiropractic at www.mcpakids.org

I would try to fix it now. Feed him first on the left side. Try a different hold. I would think that when you're done and your milk dries up, then they will go back to the same size, but sometimes it takes awhile for your milk to dry up!

I've had the same problem with my daughter...and she's only 2 weeks old!! I've been pumping on the left side to keep my milk supply up just in case she warms up to that side. I keep trying, somedays she'll latch on great, others she'll just fuss until I switch sides. Good luck

I had the same issue with my daughter when she was still nursing. I think in my case she felt there was better milk flow on the right. I still would always try to nurse on the left, but usually did best on the other side. I have been done nursing for the last 4 or 5 months and my breasts may returned to normal size. There is not a noticable size difference between them. Some women women only nurse on one side, there is nothing wrong with it except being lopsided for a while :)
