Baby Not Active Anymore at 24 Weeks

Hi Moms,

I'm currently in my 24th week and haven't felt baby's kicks in two days now. This is not the norm for this pregnancy but I'm not sure if this is classified as an emergency just yet for me to reach the on call doctor at my OB's office and I know they'll have me come in to do a sono but I don't know if I'm at a point in my pregnancy where movement decreases. With this being pregnancy #4 I would think I'd have this down by now and know when to call the doctor but every pregnancy has been so different and I just don't know. : )

From 20 weeks of pregnancy, this baby has been SO active, kicking every day and hard enough for family members to feel and every time I lay down, I can really feel her going but sincce yesterday and today, nothing. This morning I woke up cramping really bad but I took some tylenol and they went away and I was assuming it was from all the activities we did yesterday.

Anyhow, do any of you know if this is normal for baby to slow down at 24 weeks or should I go in and get everything checked out? Thanks for your help!

So What Happened?

Just an added note: I've had about 5 sonos all together with this pregnancy, including level 2's, (Everything has looked great and been normal with baby). I have read online that babies can become very active from 18-24 weeks and then slow down but I didn't think that would be the case for me since she's been so active but now that I haven't felt any movement I just thought it was strange and am starting to worry but don't want to freak out or anything. I've miscarried in the past but it was around 7 weeks and if something is wrong with this baby, wouldn't there be any other sings that something was wrong? (contractions, sick, loss of fluid, bleeding, etc.) none of which I have. Thanks moms!

I would call the OB on call Dr and then follow his directions. It might be nothing, and then a waste of time for you, but if you're worrying then that isn't good for either you or the baby.

Good luck!

I would call the on call doctor. It could be normal. But, it might not be. I find it strange NOT to feel a baby move for 2 days. Better to have placed a call that you didn't need to make than not to make one that you needed to. I hope all is well with you and baby.

My hubby is a nurse and he said that even when babies are less active, you should be able to feel them move. The movement should not stop completely. He receommends laying down and relaxing for a few hours. If you don't feel any kicks or movement at all in a two or three hour period, you need to call for sure. In fact, he thinks a doc would tell you if you don't get at least one kick or movement per hour you should be on the way to the hospital. Good luck!

Remember you are only 24 weeks along which is about the time many women begin to feel a baby even kick for the first time. Because the baby is so small, he/she may be turned around and kicking at a different angle and you cannot feel it.

My OB always told me it was better to be safe than sorry and to call her whenever I had any questions or concerns. And if I ever went through several hours without feeling one of mine kick (although much further along) I was told to drink a glass of orange juice and lay down, flat on my back for at least 30 minutes. If nothing after that, call the office.

I also had a very active baby. Sometimes she would just not kick for a day or two. It's actually based on their position. They are kicking it's just that because of where they are you're not feeling it.

But after saying that, when it did happen during my pregnancy I'd call my midwives anyway. I hated it because they always made me come in (happened twice), but isn't it better to be safe than sorry?

Go to the ER if the baby hasnt moved in 2 days you need to make sure everything is ok! I am not trying to scare you, but I feel its better to know whats going on and see.

My Dr. told me, to call if I haven't felt movement in over 24 hours, that far along in pregnancy. I would definitely get it checked out. I used to drink ice cold water (like, almost too cold to stand it!) when my baby seemed still. He always responded to that.

I would call the doc and at least ask them what they think. It's better to be safe than sorry. They might tell you it's nothing, or they might want to see you.
I was told by my OB that if I didn't feel the baby move, to drink a pop or a cup of coffee. That usually got my babes a movin'! :D

Drink some cold OJ, and lay down in a quiet room and see what you feel, they say ideally you should feel 10 movements within 2 hours. But also go with your instinct and call the doc if you feel nervous and need verification. Most will do a heart check pretty readily.

Hello. I understand where you are coming from. With my last pregnancy, it had been 6 years since I was pregnant before, and I felt like a newbie all over again.

The best advice I can offer is that every pregnancy is different. Trust your instincts. If your instincts are telling you to call your doc, then do it. Believe me, your doc would much rather have you come in for a sono that proves unnecessary in hindsight, than to have not come in when there is something wrong.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong, I just subscribe to the theory that it is better to be safe than sorry. Especially where baby is concerned.

*hugs* you're in my thoughts.

Call the doctor ASAP. That's why they have on-call doctors. Most likely they'll advise to you visit the hospital where they'll hook you up to a monitor for an hour or so to check on the baby. With the cramping you experienced, I wouldn't wait another minute. Best wishes!!!

I remember with my oldest that I would really start to worry.. it would go days without me noticing anything and just about the time I was truly freaking out usually by the 3rd or even 4th day she would act up for a couple of days.. It could be that the baby is kicking towards your back and it's not easy to feel them (that is what my midwife would explain to me) but I also belive it's better to know for sure than sit and worry the whole time. Stress hormones are not healthy for baby so try to relax, take some advice from the other ladies but if it gets to be too much then go in to the doctor and just make sure to make yourself feel better. Don't worry about seeming too worrysome the doctors are used to dealing with moms of all styles.

my youngest was a very active baby also. he would go through periods of quiet also. he reacted to storms. if a storm was brewing he wouldn't sit still for anything which felt like false labor later in the pregnancy. when there was no rain he would sit still. I was doing the test where they would hook you up and test movement at least 3 times a week due to advanced maternal age. (being old :) ) and they also commented when he was calm.

the nurses would say he is always so active and he isn't hardly moving today. must be tired. If you get to worried go to the hospital and they will hook up the wires to you that moniter the contractions and see if there is any movement at all. if i remeber right you are past the point of miscarriage (for a general rule) but can still miscarry after this point but your chances drop dramatically. I think the change is at 24 weeks.

do something to upset the baby like drink caffiene or cold water like suggested. or whatever you know this baby doesn't like. if it tended to make the baby more active when you vacumned for example then vacumn and get it wound up. if still no movement I would call the doc or go to the hospital and get the wires hooked up to you. I can't remeber what they call it. good luck.

I agree with the other responses. My kids both went for periods when they were more or less active but check it out to be sure. Better to be safe.

I haven't looked over the other responses so I'm not sure if anyone's already mentioned this, but a similar thing happened to me (baby stopped moving) and I was very concerned, but found out it was probably because he got so big, no more room left to move. Had a healthy 8 lb 7 oz boy :)

I am currently 27 weeks with my 3rd baby. I've felt this baby move since around 12 weeks and she is very active! I would certainly worry if she suddently stopped moving. If you lay still for an hour and can't feel anything I would call the dr. or go to the ER. Better to know what is going on then just to worry.
