Baby Is 9 Months Old--still No Period

Hi-

My youngest is 9 1/2 months old and I have yet to get my period. Around 7 months I slowed way back on nursing (just about 5 minutes at night and maybe for a few minutes a couple times a day) and last week he stopped wanting to nurse altogether so I am not breastfeeding at all anymore. It is possible that I am pregnant (although we use condoms), but I have been steadily losing weight for 2 months now (nothing drastic, just 2-3 pounds a week) and I would assume if I am still losing weight, I'm probably not pregnant. Plus I have no other symptoms of pregnancy. What is going on??????

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the input. I figured it was probably just my hormones, but wanted to hear what everyone else thought. Just to be on the safe side I am planning on going to the doctor soon. I just took a pregnancy test and it was negative...

Thank you!!!!

You are losing weight because of the milk.....your production has decreased and you will taper off at some point, its kind of like the 'water' weight. most people don't know but we can hold 12 pounds or more of fluid[milk] in our mammary glands while BF.
You need to be patient with the waiting for your peroid, you've not been a month off yet. It takes time ?2months for your hormones to stabilize after BF, you will get it, make sure you continue to use protection.
Good luck.

I didn't get my period back until a full year postpartum. Some mums don't get it till even later. I wouldn't worry about it! Everyone's different.

don't worry- mine didn't come back until my child was eleven months old. if it makes you feel better you can always go get a free pregnancy test at planned parenthood, but it's normal for your period to be weird for awhile after breastfeeding.

Lactational Amenorrhea! Love it! Went 31 months with no period last time around. Just fabulous. Then two periods, and knocked up again... and this the girl who "couldn't have kids!"

The longer you keep breastfeeding at least once every six hours, the longer amenorrhea may stick around. Enjoy!

Have you taken a pregnancy test? Just because you're losing weight doesn't mean that you're not pregnant. Some women actually lose some weight in the first trimester. Take a test or make an appointment with your OB to have a serum blood test done to be sure.

With my first baby I didn't get it until 19 months later and my 2nd was 14 months. Use protection because you CAN get pregnant but you're probably not ovulating......but the minute you stop protection...... good luck and ENJOY NO PERIOD!

I also breast fed and did not have a period... I didnt get mine back until like 2 or 3 months after I stopped nursing. I think it is fairly common for that to happen. But if your worried, you might want to take a test, just to be sure.

I did not have my period either until I completely STOPPED breast-feeding. I think it took a few weeks before it came. I have normal monthly periods now too. FYI. I wold not be too concerned, but, if you go a prolonged period of time, obviously I know you would ask your OB-GYN.

I just wanted to let you know, so you don't really freak out. Its ok that you haven't had your period. I personally Haven't had mine yet after my son was born. He is 15 months. I breast fed Till he was 13 months.

I have gone to the dr recently and they asked if I have had a period yet, and I told them no, that I haven't had one since April 06, They didn't seem concerned about it at all.

But best advice is if your worried about it call your dr.

You know, I have the same problem. I got an IUD for birth control. I thought that it had slipped out or something and that I was pregnant. I went to my GYN to see what's up and he told me that some women do not have their period while breast feeding, however, if you still have not had a period by the time the baby is 9 months old, it could be a bigger issue with your hormones. He said that he would need to check my thyroid and a couple other organs to check for normal hormone output. So, in your case, I would go see my doctor!!

I am still Breast-feeding my 14 month old, and never got a period, but ovulated once and I am now pregnant again. You can always take a test just to make sure.

I also have anine month old nursing baby and have not got my period back yet.
SHe also cut back on nursing around 7 months and we use condoms whenever I need it with Natural Family Planning.
I think it's pretty normal to not have a period until about 12-14 months. {That's the census from sisters and sisters-in law)

Your body may just be giving you a much needed break. Many babies in a quick period of time is very h*** o* your body. If after taking a pregnancy you are still concerned, you might want to talk with a dr. and see about having some hormone tests done. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it...I mean use protection, but don't stress. Your body needs a pregnancy vacation. Believe me I know. My babies were close together and now I have an auto-immune disease basically from too much stress on my body. Relax, enjoy your husband, enjoy the break from buying monthly supplies, and enjoy your babies!
God bless!

I always took around five months to resume my cycles, so it doesn't seem like very long at all to me. But since you have four children, you obviously had a different experience with your first three. This is just a guess, but it could be that the older you are (I was 36, 38 and 40 when I had my children, and am pregnant again now at 43) the longer it takes you to resume periods, so that it's taking you a bit longer this time than it did a few years ago.

I wish - I nursed until my son was 9 and 1/2 months (now 10 and 1/2 months) and I got my monthly at 4 months after his birth. I know it is completely normal to go one year with no monthly visit if nursing. Since you just stopped nursing it can take 1-2 months for your period to return. I would take a home pregnancy test though! You can get pregnant while nursing and using a condom (but you probably know that.

I am a happily married mom now with my first perfect baby boy and work a few days a week as a Registered nurse.

I think it is pretty common. I had spotting when my first child was four months old and then didn't get another period for another five months. One month later I was pregnant:} When I weaned my second child I started getting my period two months later. Your hormones just have to get back to normal, but I would definitely go buy a pregnancy test just to be sure.

I breastfed all four of my children. With my first two I didn't start my period until they were 9 months old. With my 3rd she was 18 months old and my fourth was 14 months old before starting my period. With my second, I was due to have surgery but still didn't have my period. They did a pregnancy test before the surgery and it came back positive. It was a "false" test because another two tests confirmed that I wasn't and they said sometimes the hormones from breastfeeding may have caused the false test...Anyway, I never got pregnant while I was breastfeeding and I never used anything. But some people are very fertile while breastfeeding. The fact that you are consistent with the condom lessens your chance of pregnancy.

Don't worry. I was the same way and very panicky that I was pregnant. I quit nursing at 7 mos and did not get my period back until my baby was a year old. Some peoples hormones just take longer to level back out. I hope this helps.

Hi there, I never had a period while I was nursing my first son, but I did when I nursed my daughter. Everyone's bodies are different but you'll probably resume within the next few months. Some people are affected differently if they're using prescription birth control or if they ever have in the past. Since you're losing weight and have no signs of pregnancy, I'd say enjoy not having your period while it lasts!
