Baby Gate That Lets a Cat Through

Hi moms!

Does anyone know of a top of the stairs babygate that keeps the baby off the stairs, but will let a cat through? Our 8 month old is starting to think about crawling, so I need to get a babygate up to keep her from taking a tumble down the stairs to the basement - but that's where our (chunky) cat's litter box is kept. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have an 8 month old that is learning to crawl and we have the exact same problem with our cat. We decided to put a pet door in the actual door to the basement. We went to Petsmart and they have a lot to choose from. I think they even had gates with pet doors also? Just another option for you.

K.,

Any cat in good health can jump a baby gate. If your cat is not in good health, you can raise the gate so there is a little gap underneath. Make sure the gap is big enough for the cat, but too small for the baby.

Your cat shouldn't be able to jump a gate at the stairs since the angle of the stairs gives the cat a significant disadvantage. Plus, when you're hungry or have to use the bathroom, do you feel like leaping? Putting a gate a few inches off the floor will only leave you open to the risk of a baby arm or leg getting caught underneath when exploring or trying to get a toy that she dropped down the steps.

I have a gate that is extra tall with a pet door in it and it's wonderful. You can find it online at improvements.com

We also have one 6" extender piece.

We used this gate for my son and my husband just put it up again for our 11 month old daughter who's very quick on the belly crawl across the hard wood floors. It's a little spendy but well worth it.

I have seen gates with about 6-inch spaces between each rung that a cat could squeeze through. You can probably get them at Babies R Us. Good luck!

We just put a regular gate in the doorway just a few inches up.

We found a metal gate at BabiesRUs. I can't remember what the brand was. It swings on a hinge, which makes it easier for us to go through without taking down the gate or climbing over. We put it up a few inches off the floor, as others have suggested. The cats slip under easily, but the baby can't get under.

Good luck!
