My doctor said that is time for my 6 months old baby to start eating some chicken, ham and turkey. Besides gerber food can anyone tell me how should I introduce that to my baby?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everybody for the advice!!!! I am definitely going to start making the food at home. I am reading the websites and all of them have a lot of information regarding baby food and I am also considering buying the book and a better food processor. My baby already started vegetables and fruits 2 months ago, but I gave her just Gerber!!! That is why my doctor said that I can start with chicken, ham, turkey, and in another month or two we will start with red meat and he was the one who recommended doing the food at home.
I am so happy I have you all to give me your thoughts!!!!

I delayed solids till my little one was 9 months old. Then I would offer him what ever meat we would eat. Just a little at a time. He is now 12 months old and he will eat anything and everything.

P.,

With all do respect, I have no idea who your doctor is, but I have never heard of such a thing. Chicken, Ham and Turkey... at 6 months?!!!... No way.

I am going to refer you to the following website:
www.wholesomebabyfood.com

My daughter is 11 months old and I still breastfeed. When she turned 6 months old I too began to introduce food to her. You begin with fruits and vegetables, people usually recommend to begin with vegetables since they are more incline to like the fruits best so they won't take to the veggies all that well.

The website will tell you at what ages to introduce what foods. How to make them and how to store them. I know it can be intimidating in the beginning, but you will get the hang of it quickly. I hardly ever used the gerber foods, only when I was out and about and had no other option.

If you have any questions at all let me know I loved making the foods and I help my girlfriends with their baby foods all the time.

Let me know what you thought of the website.

Good luck!
K

I introduced it with my 7 month old by just sitting her in the high chair at dinner and breaking off tiny tiny bites and hand feeding her. She loved it and chomped away. Now she is picking up pieces and feeding herself.

Your daughter is only 6 months and he said to give her table food? Besides the baby food, if you want to give her real food you have to puree it. They sell a little thing at babies'r'us to grind up your own baby food. I think it's only like $10. Good luck.

Boil it and grind it. A. is 18 months now, but when she was 6 - 9 months I would boil meat and vegetables and then grind it in the food processor. I added a little salt for flavor and she loved it. I froze it in ice cube trays for the following week. I work too, so I would "cook" (boil and grind) on Sunday. Then I would freeze what I made in the ice cube trays. I froze the veggie puree separate from the meat. I'd be set for the week. I'd take a veggie cube or two and a meat cube or two and mix it with some pastina or rice and some breast milk. That beats Gerber and day of the week!

I also eased A. into meat. I started with chicken and didn't really introduce any other meat for awhile. Our pediatrician was ok with that.

you can make a litle soup with veggies, and an skinless breast of chicken, you cook in water like for 40 min (taking apart the grass that appears in the surface of the soup when this begins to boil)
Then after 40 min you put part of the chicken meat and the rest of the soup in a mixer or in a food proccessor, and wait to be warm to bring to your baby
Try to use only the amount of water needed for one o more soups and at the beggining mix only litle parts of the chicken breast to see if these are good for your baby

Good luck with the jarred meats... my daughter hated them! I always had a policy of tasting anything I fed to her... YUCK! I couldn't blame her. Since at this age most nutrients come from breastmilk (or formula if that's the case) I wouldn't be too concerned about feeding meats... It wasn't until she was eating stage 3 foods that she would get meats mixed with veggies.
You could make your own as other Moms have suggested, but I notice that you work full time and may not be able to do that. (I didn't.) Know that it is more of an experience thing rather than a nutrient thing at this age... so if your DD won't eat the jarred meats, just focus on what she will eat and don't stress about what she won't!
My son will be on his way to eating jarred foods soon. What fun!

It is best to wait until the baby is ready and shows definite signs of been interested in eating the food, not playing w/ the utensils.

Even if you do start, breastmilk or formula should still be her main source of nutrition until she turns a year old.

You don't have to do baby food at all. You can start by giving her a fruit or vegie in her hand or in a mesh feeder. You can do that until she shows interest in wanting more.

If breastfeeding you should nurse her BEFORE offering solids to maintain your supply.

My son (now 3 yrs) got very little of the store bought stuff. I got the veggies like potato, pumpkin, carrots and peas, cooked and mashed them myself. That way I had full control over freshness, preservatives, salt and any other additives they put in baby food. They say they have none, so how come they don't spoil? Anyway, I would cook the meat and shred it really fine and chop it almost to a paste (like mashed vienna sausage texture). He ate most stuff, some it took several tries before he would eat them. I also gave him the same food as I was eating, so he figured if Mom is eating it, it must be good.

P., I would save your money on the jarred foods. Buy yourself a baby food mill and grind up your baby's food yourself. That way baby eats what you eat and will hopefully bypass any picky eating issues. I found one on a site called: www.onestepahead.com What I always did was steam my own veggies (sweet potato, carrots, butternut squash, green beans), puree them and freeze them in ice cube trays. With meat, I pureed them as well but mixed broth so it wouldn't be dry. As your baby becomes accustomed to the basic meats and veggies, you can puree the food you've prepared for your family right off of your plate. Same goes with fruit: you can steam most fruit and puree it yourself. Let your baby help you decide if she's ready for a new food. Don't be afraid to experiment but experiment with one food at a time. For example, if you gave your baby applesauce today, give her the same food for about 3 days. That way you can easily identify those foods she's allergic too. Feeding should be fun and exciting for both you and baby so let your baby have fun and don't worry if she doesn't like too many foods right away. In time she will get used to the new tastes and textures.

Hey P.~

My son is 7 months old and hated all the meat baby food except the ham and applesauce. So I had to get creative. I buy lunch meat from Publix shaved (so it is kind of already pre-chewed) about 1/4lb of each and it lasts 3-4 days I get him the Boars Head Oven Gold Turkey and their plain chicken. Now he eats it in clumps but before I would break off small pieces and offer a drink of water or juice every few bites. I would also give him very small bites of whatever meat we were having for dinner like pot roast, or chicken. Over all he is not at all a picky eater...as long as it comes off my plate he will eat it! Best of luck!!

I found that when introducing anything new to my kids, the easiest way was to put it on my plate and take a bite (or at least act like it with baby food, yuck) and then offer them a bite. They felt like they were eating mommy's food. Just make sure everything is cut into little pieces.

Hi P.-
You can bake the chicken and turkey; then you puree it. There are lots of things you can buy to help you do this with veggies and chicken, turkey...I waited with my son on the ham, but your preference. He ate a lot of stuff mixedin with rice ceral or oatmeal ceral. If you are into organics check out earth's best baby stuff. Google the sneaky chef or babyfood recipes. There is a ton of info out there.

Best of luck.
