Infant Baby Eczema

Im not sure i believe what the fill in doctor told me today that my 10 month old son has eczema. He had a fever and then immediately when the fever broke small red patches appeared on back and stomache, looking like bug bites, now dried pink flaky skin patches and thats what the doctor saw. I looked at what eczema was and picutures, starting on face, arms, legs. He doesnt have that at all or not the severity of what it can be. I have noticed when he gets hot this has popped up before and I dismissed it as heat rash. Eczema doesnt run on either side of the families. I have bought the Cetaphil soap and cream for the meantime and will shorten bath time. Any other suggestions and confirmations that this is what I was told it is??

What can I do next?

Hi T.-
My baby girl had eczema awfully all over her torso and back...the doctor told me to put 1% hydrocortizone on her at least 3 times a day until it was cleared and then at least once every other day for preventative care. I have also found that using the Johnson and Johnson Soothing Moisterizing Bath is good and the Aveno Relief Creme (the tube says "even for eczema") is GREAT. i just put that on her morning and night and we haven't really had any other problems.

Also, when she gets a small really bad patch, i will treat it with Lansinoah breast cream (weird, but it works).

My daughter has the same issue...My Dr. said it was eczema too & gave a prescription for Elidel. I am not completely sure thats what it is but I was the Elidel. It doesnt always work though so I use Cediphel (or however its spelled) & that works. if it doesnt I just put lotion thru-out the day until her skin isnt "itchy" as she says. When she is REALLY dry at night I will put something like Vaseline, not wheres shes slimmy though, but enough to where it will have an effect. Thats something else that might work.
But if I were you I would have a follow-up appointment with your regular Dr. just to see what he/she says.
Hope some of this helps.

Hey T.,

My little girl gets the same thing and I don't believe that she has eczema. Even after changing to "free" detergents and washing her in all the right things, the little rashes still appear sometimes. I have recently started working for a company that only sells natural and environmentally safe products. When I put my little girl on these products it has went away and I haven't seen it since. If you would like some information I would love to give you some information on the company and the products if you are interested. They have really made a difference for us so far.

Don't know if this helps, but my son had a rash similar to what you are describing. It was red heat bump like rash, blotches in some places, high fever, and dehydration. We thought it was the measles so we took him to the doctor. He had strepped throat, and the rash just came with it.

If it is eczema, these others have given you plenty of good ideas. If you are worried that your child was mis-diagnosed, you can always get a second opinion. I'm very picky about which doctors my children see. If they have a problem that won't wait until they can see their regular doctor, I see the fill-in and do a follow-up visit with the regular doctor within a week. It never hurts to get a second opinion. You aren't being rude, just thorough.

I wrote the letter below a few weeks ago and have since found a cure (in our case anyway). I was talking to a cousin and her daughter had the same problems (dry cracked skin that burns and lotions just make it burn worse). Her Dr gave her samples of Topicort LP She gave me one I put it on that night and it was gone the next morning. That was 12 days ago.

My four year old daughter has had eczema, she was diagnosed when she was about six months old. Her dermitologist perscribed eledel (sorry if it is spelled wrong) Which I later heard has been linked to skin cancer. The best thing we have tried is, as weird as this might sound vasiline. Apply very thick to affected areas before bed. My daughter has it on her elbows maily so I cut the toe out of a pair of socks and pull this up over her elbow while she sleeps to keep it on her and off ther sheets. Hope this helps.

My son is 3 years old and he does have eczema and it doesn't always pop up on his arms and legs. Sometimes it is on his stomach and back. The best advice i could give you is to wash your child with Cetaphil and use a fragrance free laundry soap and lotion. Goodluck :)

My baby also has some eczema and it doesnt run in the family but I hear that this is very common. My son had little patches here and there on his stomack and legs. The dos told me to use some eucerin cream(which did not work) and also wanted to get him a steriod cream. Instead what I used was a natural lotion called Renew. After I used it the first day it was almost completely gone. I use it on him everyday on his whole body and he hasnt had a problem since. Another mom recommended to me whose baby also had eczema. The lotion is really good and its natural so its safe for the whole family. Let me know if you would like some more info about the lotion. Hope this helps.

T.,
My 13 month old, Charles was diagnosed with Eczema recently. My monther-in-law thought it was ringworms. After seeing a dermatlogist, he prescribed Locoid Lipocream (rub on the worst spots), Elidel on all spots, and Cetaphil all over. Lotion up within 3 minutes of a bath. Apply creams three times a day. Charles' eczema started on his back and legs. The doctor told us to keep the air cool in his room. I didn't change his laundry soap, just use slightly less. All soaps, shampoos, and lotions, I use baby with dye, fragrance free. Charles' is baby smooth and soft again. I hope some of this helps. I know everyone has different results. Good luck.

The first time my son had a patch of eczema, we thought it was an oddly shaped ringworm. Never heard of fever coming with it.

My son was diagnosed with Eczema by his Pediatrian. Well, nothing he told me to try helped him, so I decided to get a second opinion from the Dermatologist, and then a 3rd opinion from an Allergist. Well, he did have Eczema and come to find out he was allergic to several different foods that caused his Eczema to flare up even worse. Since finding out his allergies and staying clear from those particular foods, his Eczema is much more controlable. The itchy rash never goes away completely, somedays is will be alot less than other days. It sounds like what you are talking about is Eczema and it's frustrating because there is not a whole lot you can do about it, except just try and keep him out of itching misery. I haven't found a lotion yet that helps it (although I am going to take the advise of someone else who emailed you and just try that Renew, that's like the one thing I haven't tried yet.)Other than that, use non scented baby wipes and don't use them on his face, Cetaphil soap, and give him a bath every other day. And put on Hydrocodizone creams especially after bathing. Hope this helps. It is nice to know that their are other moms out there with the same struggles.

Try using Jergens lotion and Dove for sensitive skin when bathin. My son, who is now 13 months has eczema. It started on his face around 3 months then to his lower calves. I've tried eczema lotions which just seem to make it worse.

My daughter, my niece and I myself all suffer from different degrees of eczema. Here are a few helpful hints that have and are working for us. If it is eczema I hope this helps. There are 2 lines of products that are free of dyes, parafins, scents,...that have reduced breakouts. You can look them up online. One line is Vanicream this is lotions and shampoo/cond. Another line is Free and Clear, this is soaps etc. Be very careful what kind of lotions you put on your child as you might be making it worse by irritating his already sensative skin. Also, do put (the right kind of) lotion on him right after he gets out of the bath. That will help his skin retain the moisture that it needs so that it won't make him irritated and itchy. Hope this helps.

My boy has the same thing. It seems to flair up more when he's hot. My Dr. told me not to keep him in his bath for more than 8 min and to make sure it's not very warm (of course). I use Cetaphil for soap and than Cetaphil CREAM not lotion. It seems to work very well. He's 28 months now and he doesn't have the flair ups as bad anymore. Now that he's older I can keep him in his bath much longer! Hope this helps!!
