I am not a mother yet, but I am wanting to get all the information I can. Does anyone have any references on a really nice, good, professional baby doctor (for some reason I don't remember what they are actually called...the doctor you see when you arew pregnant)? I am looking for one in Jenison, Grandville, or Hudsonville (Michigan, of course). I am also looking for a good place to get nice, good quality, and somewhat cheap baby stuff (clothes, diapers, bibs, bottles, etc.)? Is there a such a thing as a parenting class? If anyone can help me out that would be muchly appreciated. Thank You!

What can I do next?

HI S.,

If you are looking for an OBGYN ( a doctor you see when you are pregnet) Dr. Susan Hicks with West Michigan OBGYN is awesome. They have an office downtown across from Spectrum and another in Grandville. If you are looking for a doctor for a baby or child, Dr. Jeffrey Mantia is the best. He is also in Grandville on Wilson ave. His number is 538*2410

It sounds like your looking for an obstetrician (OB/GYN), but I would also encourage you to look into a midwife. I had a wonderful midwife, Susan Wente (she is listed in the local business section of this site under Homebirthworks). She only does homebirths, but there are also midwives that deliver in hospitals. As for an OB/GYN I love mine, but I didn't use her for my pregnancy because I wanted a homebirth. Her name is Rebecca VanValkenburg and she is at Area Wide OB-GYN Health Services PC http://www.areawideob-gyn.com/home/

If you are at all interested in natural birth options I would highly recommend the book Ina May's Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin, I believe there is a section on choosing a provider as well.

Good Luck!

Hi S.,

My pediatrician has two locations, one in Grandville and one downtown Grand Rapids(yet its still a nice small practice). There are 4 doctors in the practice. Ours is Dr. Joe Taylor. He is EXCELLENT! I was previously using a family practice doctor and I'm so glad I switched to a pediatrician. The practice is called ABC Pediatrics if you are interested. Also, I love shopping at Target. I buy Target brand diapers and they work great! They are nice and stretchy, and they absorb as well as the big name brands. As far as bottles and other baby products, finding what works best for your baby is sometimes more important than the price. But Walmart and Target seem to have the best prices on stuff. You can take a parenting class through the hospital once you become pregnant. I attended the one that Spectrum Health offers when I was pregnant with my first child. It was very informative and helpful.

Holland — I realize this is out of your area, but if you don't get any other leads you may want to come this far.

I absolutely love our pediatrition, Karen Locke. She's located on the Northside of Holland. My son is 3 1/2 and we've been with her ever since. I'm currenlty pregnante, and you can guess where that baby will be going too.

In Holland there is a consignment shop called Bumble Bee's. They are located in the outlet mall. They are very organized, and have stricked pollicies about what they accept. Because they closely monitor what they take in, everything is in great condition. I've found a Tommy Hilfigure outfit for my son for like $10-15. I just can't brag enough about them.

Another idea would be to watch for garage sales in your area.

I hope this helps!
