Baby Cereal

Question, I started my son (He's four and a half months) on infant rice cereal about two weeks ago. I started him with just one bowl for dinner a day and slowly increased it and now he's eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner (3 tablespoons) of cereal with a spoon, this has been about a week. He's having at least four bowel movements per day, is this normal? I have an eight year old daughter you would think I'd remember this stuff, but I don't! :-)

What can I do next?

It's fine! All kids are different. 3 meals is quite a bit for a baby that young though. They still need to be getting most of their nutrition from breastmilk or formula. Honestly, I would cut it back to once a day, or decrease the amount of cereal at each feeding. Kids don't really get much nutrition from food until they're past a year.

Hi...I started my daughter about the same age on rice cereal, and she only had one bowel movement a day. She was breastfed, so maybe that makes a difference. I read that formula fed babies poop more, so I don't know. I would call his Dr. and ask on the phone if this is normal. If it is not, I am sure they will tell you to bring him in. Good luck!

It's completely normal. Some babies poop daily, once or several times, some only once every other day and some once a week! In my own experience the pattern will change as diet changes, but I wouldn't worry unless the baby is constipated, or has very loose bowels. Then a call to the doctor would be in order.

Congratulations on being a new mom all over again!

There is no normal. As long as it is consistent with your son, it is ok. It is surprising though since rice cereal is binding, you would think it would go less. Three bowls a day is more than I did though. We did not hit three meals until about 6 months.

I just did once to twice a day for quite a while when I first started feeding. I also waiting till 6 mos. Feeding solids is just a learnign experience, not for nutrition, so you don't want him to get too full on cereal. So as long as he is drinking about the same amount of milk it sounds fine, all babies are different and sometimes you just have to follow their cues!

Sounds right to me. Funny how we can't remember those kinds of things, isn't it?
