Baby Bottles --- Need Suggestions

Greetings, Everyone -

My DH and I welcomed our beautiful daughter to the world on July 22, 2008 at 32 weeks gestation. She was in the NICU until Monday August 18th and was bottle-fed with a special formula due to her gut not being yet tolerant of breast milk.

At home, I have the Born Free bottles and she is not really fond of those nipples. The hospital gave us a few of the bottles and nipples they used to feed her and she takes to those very quickly and gets done eating in no time flat. The Born Free bottles, on the other hand, she takes her time and often falls asleep during the middle of a feeding.

Are there any bottles / nipples that anyone can recommend so that our preemie will eat as she had done in the hospital in NICU? Thanks a bunch, everyone!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hello Ladies!

I wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions. I didn't remember that I had actually purchased some Dr. Brown bottles during my pregnancy until I went into a closet where I started stashing things away for baby's arrival (hee!). She loves those bottles and I notice she feeds from those much better than the Born Free bottles.

I thank everyone for their responses and wish everyone the best of luck!

I had a preemie as well (32 weeks too). I tried a gazillion different ones. The only ones she would take were the Enfamil ones I got at the hospital. I found them at the enfamil website and ordered them that way. I washed and reused, but keep an eye on them, they are NOT for long term use. Here's the link..

You just have to select Nipples as the acceessory in the drop down box... HTH.

I assume you can order the Similac ones too if that is what she is stuck on.

Let me tell ya. I know exactly what you are going through. In the NICU for 4 months. I came home and started using Avent with a # 1 nipple. She would fall asleep also, but I just kept waking her up. Be patient. Call me if you need anything. Bringing a baby home from the NICU is great and amazing but really scary too

I mostly use Avent, but also have one Born Free bottle that the baby liked better as he got older. The nipples or so soft they often collapse until the baby gets used to it--does not appear to bother him, just takes longer to eat. Also, I would highly recommend calling the hospital and asking them. I called the lactation consultant at my hospital several times and they may have some tips for you.

You can use Avent nipples on Born free bottles. I prefer the avent bottles but would wait to buy any as they are about to come out with BPA free....so, you could try those nipples on the bottles you already have. Good luck!

Preemie mom to a 26 wkr here. Hands down we loved the Dr. Brown bottles and nipples, especially for all her reflux. And now they have BPA free Dr. Brown's bottles. However, they used the Soothie in the hospital. Now you can buy Soothie bottles and nipples. Keep tryin and keep introducing it to her. Some have to go through a bunch to find one that works best.
Also, if you have any bottles, new or used that are not BPA free, you can take them to Babies R Us and exchange them for BPA free bottles. They will exchange them dollar for dollar. I understand not all BRU are doing it, so call yours first and confirm they are participating in the bottle exchange. Lewisville one is, I just exchanged $74 worth of bottles for new BPA free ones.

Good luck. You can pm me too if you need someone to talk to or preemie advice.

I just loved the Avent bottles. How was the nipple on the bottles they had at the hospital? If it was long, slender nipple, maybe the Evenflo bottles will work for you. It's more of the "traditional" style nipple. My oldest child had these for his juice and water bottles.

Congratutions & enjoy your little angel.
