I'm 33 weeks Prego and I plan on breast feeding, but just in case something goes wrong I'd like to have some bottles on hand. I have no idea what type of bottles to get. Does it matter if they are the cheaper brand? I haven't bought bottles in 5 years so I'm at a complete loss! Any advice will help! Thank you! :)

What can I do next?

I love the advent bottles, they are a little pricier, but I never had a problem going back and forth to the bottle. With my oldest, he didn't get a bottle until 3m and he didn't mind these. My 6M old had 2 prior to 3M (his big brother really wanted to feed him) and still no problem going back and forth. I only tried these though, because I had friends who had problems going back and forth with the cheap gerber bottles and switched to these. Good luck!

when my daughter was born we went and spent so much money on all the top name bottles (money we didnt have lol) a few of each kind because we werent sure what she would like.....long story short....we gave 75% of them to my friend when she was pregnant because baby wouldnt use them with the funny shaped nipples and holes on the top or bottom....she would only take the cheap ones that came llike 5 in a pack for $6.00.....

the things I wish I knew before she was born....

Playtex Ventair were great although I little bit of a pain to clean. Playtex drop-ins are good too...but you have to buy the liners and they can get pricey. Go on the target.com website and read the reviews for the different bottles. My youngest DD is 4.5 so it's been a while since I"ve researched bottles.

FYI - I took a breastfeeding class thru my local hospital and they recommend the playtex bottles. I had already used them with my first so I was glad they were still the preferred bottles nine years later =D

My fav is Playtex drop ins. Ive also used Avent which always leaked, and the basic Gerber which were good.

Both of my sons were introduced to a bottle very early (0 days and 3 days old) and neither had any trouble with nipple confusion. We used the Walmart Brand. With my younger son we had to switch to Dr. Brown's but that had to do with a specific medical condition he had.

Seriously, any bottle should be fine. The majority of moms I've talked to that had problems with bottles were ones that waited a couple of months to introduce the bottle.

Congrats!

If you're planning on breastfeeding, you want to get a bottle that has the same suck as breastfeeding does. Most bottles require a different type of suck, which can lead to nipple confusion...or the baby just refusing it all together.

When I got prego this time, my baby was only six months old (it was a super surprise pregnancy!). She was 100% nursing, and my milk took a really hard hit from the pregnancy and wasn't enough for her. We tried Avent bottles, which are great, I'm sure. But my baby wouldn't take them.

We finally found Breastflow by the First years:
http://www.thefirstyears.com/wps/portal/breastflow?xcid=PS

These are AWESOME. It is the same suck as breastfeeding. I think all breastfeeding moms who want to also give a bottle at times should look into these. They were a life saver for me because my baby wouldn't take any other bottle. You can find them at Target and probably Wal-Mart. So they are easy to come by. I highly, highly, highly recommend these. Some think that some Dr something bottles are better. No, they aren't. They just have the milk flow slowly, which Breastflow has two types of bottles. Ones for newborns (slow flow) and one for older babies.

Any type of bottle you get, if the suck is different than nursing suck, you are going to risk nipple confusion if you offer it in the first month...well, except for the Breastflow bottle since it's the same suck. So, you might want to be careful of offering anything else, other than nursing, for a while.

I bf my daughter and she was also bottle fed when I went back to work. She didn't care what bottle we gave her, if it had milk in it she was going to drink it. My son was an entire different story though. It may take some trial and error to see what your baby likes. I personally liked the Playtex drop ins for the convenience of them and they have some different nipples that you can choose from. We also used the Dr. Brown's bottles successfully. Good luck and congratulations.

Not all babies will take any bottle. I didn't breastfeed my son (GASP) and he was over 1 week old before we found a bottle he would take. It was AWFUL.
We ended up with Gerber Nuk and Dr. Brown's for him.

I did breastfeed my daughter and at 3 months old we introduced the bottle.
You want something that is similar to the breast. We used Sassy MAM.
BornFree, and Tommee Tippee are also good for breastfeeding.

I've used the Playtex Ventaire as well as the Gerber NUK. I used the Playtex ones initially when I was nursing/pumping. The only thing I ever heard negative from the people at the daycare was that they would occasionally leak when they were being warmed in the bottle warmer. I don't know if it was user-error (the bottle wasn't put together properly) or if the water/steam from the warmer caused the vent at the bottom to open & leak. Never had any issues with either bottle causing nipple confusion or anything, though!

I use the Brestflow bottles and I have no trouble with nipple confusion. I also am a working mom and still nurse when I'm not at work. I started my daughter on the bottle around a month and a half since I had to go back to work. And you can get the bottles at Walmart.

Please read Balancing Breast and Bottle: Reaching Your Breastfeeding Goals. The companion website is www.breastandbottlefeeding.com. Most moms have a favorite nipple for their own baby, but the bottle nipple needs to be chosen according to how YOUR baby sucks. Can't rely on someone else's favorite. Pick a shape that gently flares from tip to base, like the narrow neck (standard) Dr. Browns. Most packaging claims to be "just like breastfeeding" or tell the mom "wide is most like the breast" but these statements aren't true, and actually are violations of a Code not enforced in the USA. Good job planning ahead!

My personal favorites are the Playtex Ventaire Wideneck. I breastfeed, but I also work, so we use them when I'm at work. It's always good to have some bottles on hand just in case - plus if you wanted to go out without the baby and not be on a time restraint, then you could pump and have the babysitter or whatever feed the baby. Good luck and congrats!

I would wait and try one of a couple of kinds on the bay when it's born and see which they prefer. I know my daughter had twins and one would take Avent and the other refused it and used another kind. You might be stuck with bottles that won't be used. Also don't wait too long to introduce the bottle to the baby or they may not take it being breast fed. At least be sure they can take one if necessary. And some will only take breast milk so if you have an issue be sure your baby will take formula or that you have breast milk pumped for that reason.
