Infant Baby Acne - Eielson AFB, AK

My 6 week old has baby acne all over her face. I realize that it is totlly normal and I remember when my son was in that phase, but it's kind of icky looking. Does anybody have any tips on how to clear it up. I know she will eventually grow out of it on her own, but if I could speed the process along safely that would be great.

What can I do next?

Congrats on the new baby! My husband is active army so I know you are dealing with alot right now. Please know you aren't alone and if you need anything at all you can contact me!
I work as a nurse and skin care consultant from home, there is no really safe product out there for such a small baby. I would just recommend using a good cleanser that does not contain mineral oil or alcohol, and wash her face with just a warm washcloth after every feeding. My company does have a baby line that contains no mineral oil/baby oil/alcohol or harsh cleansers. You can take a look at www.J..myarbonne.com My 3 year old still uses the products for his eczema. I know it seems expensive, but it's the best on the market and I do offer wholesale discounts to everyone.
Keeping her face clean of milk and foods will help and maybe offer a little water at times. One ounce of flouride baby water is safe and will help keep her stools soft, too. I hope this helps! And thank your husband for us. We do appreciate what you BOTH are doing for all of us!

First of all, thank you so much for your service! I know you aren't active duty, but you are just as much in the military as your husband is! My prayers are with him and your family!! Now, the acne...If you are breast feeding, try putting some breast milk on it. There are so many good things in you milk! I know several people who have used it to get rid eye infections, help heal cuts, and I know it helps with adult acne, so why not baby acne! And of course, there is nothing harmful in youre breast milk, so what harm could come from trying!

Hope that helps!

Hi K.,

Congratulations on your new baby girl. I hope you are doing well with your husband away. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

If you use anything, I wouldn't use anything that has harsh chemicals in them. The skin absorbs so much more than we know. Selsun Blue would not be a good treatment. It has too many harsh and harmful chemicals. You may want to look for a children's natural body wash at a health food store or someplace like Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. If you would like more information about safer products for your family, you can go to my my website at www.livetotalwellness.com/M.

When both of my daughters had infant acne I would just wash them with a warm washcloth 3 times a day. That way I wasn't using anything that would irritate it more.

Hope this helps.

M.

I know it's not really pretty to look at. My daughter went through the same thing. I even asked the doctor and he told me I just had to wait it out. I still took pictures! She still looked cute. It sure does not last long, so hang in there.

my baby girl didn't have really bad acne but I'd wash her face down each night with warm water and baby johnson's soap on a washcloth and always the next day, the acne seemed to lessen in size or go away. So that seemed to help or least maintain the cleanliness of her face so that it wouldn't get worse. I hope this may help your baby some. Congrats and good luck!

A good bet would be cetaphil wash for sensitive skin .. you want to be sure you're using something that's non comedogenic and fragrance free

My daughter had this, too, for what seemed like forever! I found that very gently using a baby washcloth for the barest of exfoliation helped (during her bath so it was wet, but had no soap -- just water). This also helped my girl's cradle cap, a separate issue! If only patience were a stronger virtue of mine :) Because as you know, it will fade on its own.

Good luck!

Hi K.,

I would not encourage putting chemicals of any kind on a new born baby their skin is so sensitive and you don't know exactly how she will react to the things you put on her skin. Right now just enjoy the blessing of her being placed in your life, her outward appearance is only temporary. So many times we as parents focus on the superficial characteristics of our children instead of looking at the things that are important.

You may be concerned about how others will view your child, but your baby should be treasured by you. Do not begin her precious little life with these types of concerns. She has no understanding of it, but this could begin a tendency to judge her by what she looks like. I have raised 4 adults and have a 6 year old girl.

I am so burned out on how at the age of 6 so many people pay attention to her outward appearance. You can stop a very hurtful tendency before its able to affect your daughters life.

Hi K.,

My son had baby acne pretty bad as well. My aunt is a nurse in a pediatrician's office. She recommended Selsun Blue. You lather it up and put it on their face and anywhere else they have it. Leave it on for a minute and then wash it off with a warm washcloth. Do that for a few days and then once a week for maintenance. We usually just did it for a day or two when it got bad and then when we gave them a bath - which was about once a week. We also used it a little bit on their scalps to help with cradle cap. Hope this helps.
