Babies and Pools

I never thought about this before, but I am curious. I've never seen swim diapers in very small baby sizes. I have a new baby in my care (I am a foster parent), and was wondering about taking her in a pool. Is the reason you can't find teeny tiny swim diapers because you shouldn't take teeny tiny babies swimming? I grew up around pools and know we were always brought in the water when we were very very young, but we also didn't wear seat belts back then either!

My little one is almost two months old. We go swimming quite frequently. Clearly I don't want to do anything that would harm her or make her sick. Help me out mamas! And thank you in advance for not ripping me apart for not knowing :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the advice! Yes, it's an indoor pool, so no worries about sunscreen. And no one at the pool was concerned with pooping. As long as you have a liner or swim diaper on your LO, they are fine with the oodles of babies and toddlers that swim there. I would NEVER put a baby directly in a pool with no diaper or in just a regular diaper that would leak, but I have seen people do it!
We took the kids to the pool last night. She loved it! My SIL gave us a bathing suit that had a washable liner in it, and I doubled it up with a diaper. She did great! She cried when I first dunked her feet in, but after a second try, she was fine and we let her get wet up to her waist. She fell asleep in the water! I only kept her in for a few minutes and then wrapped her up in her towel where she slept the rest of the hour we were there. All my kids have been water babies, I've just never started them in the water when they were so tiny! Thanks for the advice!

It probably isn't worth it to the companies to make them smaller, at least the disposible kind. Kids aren't suppose to wear sunscreen until 6 months, so they probably assume, a majority of younger kids aren't going to be in the pool, since most pools are outdoors. That being said, I used Pampers on my daughter since they seem to run smaller than the size on the package. They do make reusable swim diapers. I just bought a reusable ones by iPlay for my boys. I just googled their website and they have some that go down to 3 months.

I bought my daughter a swimsuit from a cloth diaper store. It had a washable absorbent portion comparable to a cloth diaper. Worked great.

I started taking my babies swimming at about that age. There is a concern that the chlorine is harsh on baby's sensitive skin, and that baby might not be happy if the water isn't quite warm, but if your baby isn't bothered then neither should you be. I had Gabby's Pool Pants and Swim Diapers for my kids. Size small fits from 6-14lbs.

Our Target already has them. They are in the area between the baby isles and the baby clothes (if that makes sense). They have different sizes but the smallest are pretty small. They are reusable and around 9.99.

My favorite picture of my younger daughter was when we went on vacation in Hawaii. She was 8 weeks old, and I bought a teeny-tiny (reusable) swim diaper/bikini for her. (I think I bought it at Target?) We put her in the ocean for the first time, and she got the funniest look on her face! But she loved it - she started kicking her little legs and kept trying to get her face closer to the water (there were fish swimming all over the place). Anyway, she was no worse the wear for the experience, and she loves swimming to this day (she'll turn 8 in June). I think you would only want to take your baby into very warm water, of course, but being in the pool for a short time should be fine.

I remember reading somewhere that babies younger than six months old can't regulate their body temperature, so it's best not to take them swimming. That said, I took my daughter to the indoor pool when she was two or three months old (clearly a second baby, right?)
We are using cloth diapers, so I just put a pre-fold on her with one of her brother's cloth swim diapers over the top. I also didn't let her get immersed completely (just up to her waist or so) until she was a little older.

I didn't take my baby in a pool until she was 6 months old. Before that, she loved her baby bath tub. On hot days, we put her in that.

The other reason for keeping young babies out of public pools is that they are unpredictable poopers. Even swim diapers don't keep all poo out of a pool. If a baby poops in the pool, it has to be closed, emptied, and cleaned.

I started swimming with my daughter when she was 2 months old. We lived in CA where you could swim year round though. We bought the plastic swim covers that go over a regular diaper. She did just fine. Go ahead and take her swimming this summer. Just give her a bath after :)

They do make small ones! My youngest son was born last Feb, and we started taking him to the pool as soon as it opened in June. I think the small size of swimmy diapers goes from like 8lbs to 16lbs or something like that. We normally just used the Pampers or Huggies disposable kind.

I don't know specifically about putting a baby in a pool. However, they do recommend not putting sunscreen on an baby who is less than six months old. So, if your daughter is only two months, you'll either need to use a full body bathing suit (like a wetsuit) that has built in UV protection + a hat, or use an indoor pool. Luckily, she'll be old enough for sunscreen when summer rolls around. Seeing that you're in Ohio and it's february, I'm thinking maybe you do have an indoor pool somewhere.

Try OneStepAhead's reusable ones, and check the pool regulations. Our county requires a swim diaper + a cover (often a reusable swimmy or a pair of plastic pants) for children who are not toilet trained. My DD was a late summer baby, so she was more than 6 months old by the time we hit the pool.

Good question! I wonder about the chlorine and it's effects on such a little one's very sensitive skin.

I never noticed that! We always waited a bit since we have an outdoor pool with no shade coupled with no sunblock before six months seemed a bad idea for my fair-skinned babies. Plus the water isn't the warmest in our pool or our local community indoor pool. My son would start shivering in both after a little bit even at two years old. That would be my main concern for your little one - staying warm enough.

i wouldnt take a young baby in a pool cause if they poop and it leaks..they have to shut the pool for 24 hours.

as babies get older.. they poop on a more regular schedule and might even give you a look that you can tgell they are going to poop.

wait till the baby is older..
