At-Home-Mom Jury Duty...Douglas County Court Child Care

WELL, NEVERMIND! I JUST GOT A NOTICE THAT I'VE BEEN EXCUSED...HOORAY!!!

Yesterday I received a notice of jury duty for Douglas County. I've discovered that unlike many other states, Colorado does not exempt at-home-parents of young children. I have a two year old daughter at home with me. I've been in contact with the Jury Commissioner and now I will hopefully be in contact with the head judge next week. I'm worried that my hands will be tied and that they will force me to find child care for my daughter due to Colorado law. She's never been in any kind of child care other than the nursery at our rec center and for no more than 20 minutes. Since November of 2007, she has found it to be traumatic and more than surpasses the 15 minute continuous cry rule the nursery has, even though she is familiar with the women who work in the nursery. After several attempts to try the nursery with her again, the attempts have failed over and over. I am scared that I will not be able to get exempt from this duty and that my daughter will be forced to stay with people she doesn't know and be unneccessarily traumitized. I don't have any other child care options. Has anyone had any experience with jury duty for the county or another county where you were forced to use child care that went beyond your best judgement for your child? Is anyone here familiar with the child care the county uses? Also, I'm at a loss as to what to do for my other two school age children. The jury day lasts until 5:00 and I do not have the financial ability to seek afterschool care for them, especially if selected and having to look at several days of duty (just trying to prepare for worst case scenerio). Although employers have to allow employees to attend jury duty, I don't think I've ever heard of a law that says employers must allow spouses to leave work to support jury duty for their spouse. I feel like I'm running in circles and am hoping for some ideas or some information of what I can do, etc. They keep wording this as an inconvenience to me, but I do not believe that is the case at all. I'm fine sitting in jury duty...but what in the world am I supposed to do with my children that is in their best interest? Thanks...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I've been excused!!! And after being told a few times that I would not be! Hooray! I'm so glad my little girl won't have to face being forced to go to child care with people she doesn't know! I'm so glad I won't have to worry about her the whole time!

Hopefully you can speak with an actual person who will excuse you... or postpone the date until next year. I got a jury duty notice in the mail yesterday for Arapahoe County. I work full time, but am breastfeeding. I pump at work every 3-4 hours and breast feedin the evenings beginning at 5pm... so I have other issues that I'm going to have to try to deal with. I was thinking about writing on there that I want to postpone the date until next year and write a letter explaining why... and hopefully they would exept it. I can't imagine they'd want to stop a trial for me to pump... or I could always just whip it out right there in the jury box... their choice! ;O)

I'm glad you got excused! Maybe another year. :) I might be looking to you on how to get excused. My name always seems to come up. Even after we move!

Hi..just wondering how you got excused from jury duty? I have a similar situation and was told the best they could do was postpone for 3 months..but I would still have to serve at that time! Please let me know what worked for you, thanks!
