Hi Ladies,

I am pregnant and have been having a lot of trouble with my asthma for the past few weeks. I have seen the doctor and am on my asthma medications, but am wondering if any one has any tips or advice for me. I am looking for alternative, safe ways to help me stop coughing and help me breathe better. I don't want to do anything that could jeopardize my baby's health or safety. I also have gotten a cold which is making the asthma alot worse. I am allergic to most medications--so I try to just let my body heal naturally as much as I can. Does anyone know of anything else I can do besides take my meds, drink lots of water, throat losenges, tea and rest?

Thank you all so much for any help or feedback!!!

So What Happened?

Hi,

Thank you so much for responding to my post. I had a setback last night with my breathing and went to the ER. I have bronchitis and possibly pneumonia. I am at home today resting and will hopefully be feeling a lot better by the afternoon-- They gave me some more meds to help. Thank you so much for your caring thoughts and advice.

Is it possible for you to quit work so you can take care of your body and your 2 year old? I know my asthma kicks up a lot when I'm over-stressed and fatigued. I would also look into a homeopathic or naturopathic doctor to find natural remedies that are good for you and the baby.

I believe there are also some acupuncturists who work with pregnant mamas. They have been a great source of healing when I had recurring bronchitis along with my asthma one year. When I finally gave up the prescription drugs and only used herbs and acupuncture, I stopped the cycle of the bronchitis.

One last thought, especially while you have a cold, is chest rubs using Vicks or a new product by "All Terrain" that is basically the natural version of Vicks. My husband has put me into a peaceful sleep many times that way.

I hope you feel better soon!

I, too, was on asthma medication during both pregnancies. My OB/Gyn, GP and a respiratory specialist who I saw, all said the risk to the baby of reduced oxygen from asthma is greater than the risk of the medication.

I had horrible shortness of breath with my 2nd child. I couldn't walk 20 feet without being totally out of breath. I finally wound up having to take two steroidal inhalers Foradil and Asmanex in addition to my Albuterol. These are inhalers that asthmatics use on a regular basis - even when pregnant.

You and your developing baby NEED the oxygen supply that functioning lungs can supply. Take what you need to be able to breathe. Serious shortness of breath creates a ton of stress for you, and stress is not good for baby!

I had pregnancy asthma with both kids. I used Q-var and Albuterol when it got really bad. It's the hormones usually that exacerbate the asthma symptoms. Mine went away after my kids were born. Both came out healthy!

Take what you need to in order to get the oxygen you and the baby need!

Hi Molly - Hope you are doing better - I just wanted to add that I have heard of some people having relief of asthma from drinking mangosteen juice. Here is a link http://www.insidemangosteen.com/powerx/written-a.html
There are two posts about asthma. Also, FYI - I have two mamasource businesses, www.findgreenhere.com and www.referralco-op.com and on referral co-op I have a contest for a free bottle of XanGo juice - one winner per week. Best of luck to you and it is good that you do try and alleviate symptoms with natural substances that won't be a worry for you baby! Be well, V. G. :o)
