Asperger's/ADHD AND Panhypopituitarism

I have a 7 yr old who was born with panhypopituitarism. He's been on a total growth hormone replacement since birth. Then last year when he was 6 the school formally gave him the Asperger label. Then they also decided he had ADHD. He is now on 3 medications twice a day (one of which is a level 2 narcotic) plus a daily injection. Are all these drugs having some effect on him? Has anyone been to a DAN! doctor? I read about how a DAN! doctor helped Jenny McCarthy with detoxing her son and wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience. I have a couple books on GF diets and I know supplements help but have yet to make the change.

Another major concern is that of my 1 yr old. I've read where it's not uncommon to have more than one child/boy with AS. And about the widespread concern with the MMR vaccine linked to AS. I refused that vaccine at his 1 yr checkup thinking it will buy me time to do more research as well as getting him tested at 18 mos for AS. If he shows signs of having it, then I'll know it won't be the injection giving it to him. I have major issues with certain vaccines being given to kids these days but that's another subject.

Is there anyone out there who can help/answer/suggest/advise etc. on any of these subjects. I am not involved with any support group and no family living within 300 miles. Please help.

Many thanks...
D. T.

Hi D.. I haven't read any of your responses yet, and I could talk about these subjects for a long time, but I'll try to keep it short! :) I am a mom of 2 boys and a pediatric occupational therapist. I have worked with many, many children with Aspergers as well as ADHD. I also have a wellness business where I share education on nutrition and how what we eat(or don't eat) impacts our functioning. This is something I am very passionate about! You are on the right track with thinking about all of these topics and concerns you are having. It can be overwhelming!
I would certainly look at his diet and work to make changes there.
A few good websites related to diet and behavior: http://www.drgreene.com/21_1796.html
www.feingold.org
www.fabresearch.org
http://www.rawfoodinfo.com/articles/art_Wisconsinschoolre...

I also recommend Omega 3 supplementation (Nordic Naturals appears to have the strictest/most thorough testing for purity/quality, etc) as well as a whole food fruit and veggie concentrate, Juice Plus+. Increasing antioxidants naturally with raw fuits and veggies such as that found in Juice Plus (17 different fruits/veg daily) can make a huge impact on immune response, overall health, assisting in overall functioning. This is crucial, especially if your children are missing these phytonutrients in their diets on a regular basis. LEarn more at www.HamreHealth.com
Also - your 7 year-old can get Juice Plus for free with a study currently going on. Email me for details!

I do know of some families that have been very pleased with DAN doctors. I would give it a try!

I also know of families who have seen good results with chiropractic care. I've seen good results with my 6 yo.

I would also look at some sensory processing resources to address self-regulation, etc. www.alertprogram.com (How does your engine run?) The out of Sync Child and there are others - you can do a search or email me for more resources! I've gotta run - sorry!
Best of luck to you. Remember you are the mom and you know your child best. Baby steps and lots of love!
Please let me know if you have any questions or want to talk!
Krystal

Hi, I can only address the Asperger issue. My son was diagnosed at 3 yrs. (he is 13 now) but I knew he was different from birth. Vacines may contribute to Autism but Asperger (in my opinion) is a different neurological syndrome. The capacity for learning and adapting to social situations is amazing. The Aspies can learn and grow and enjoy so much in life. My son is a source of so much entertainment and enlightenment. They think differently and ask questions that would never occur to a NT (neurotypical). He is mainstreamed at school and has an aide that he shares with other kids. He participates in group therapy and sometimes individual therapy as needed (all paid for by the public school system). As your son grows up you will help him become his own advocate and aware of his Aspergers and the fact that this makes him unique and possessing the Aspie qualities that make him loyal, honest, and very focused. He now reads books written by kids his age with Aspergers. But to get to this point you have to do the groundwork. Google "Asperger Support Texas". You will see that you are not alone. My husband travels extensively also and I did the work myself. I never lived near family, and they never really understood Aspergers anyway. Sometimes family is more of a struggle that the syndrome. Go to seminars, the local colleges/universities and autism societies have seminars all the time. Get the book by Tony Atwood. I have even been to his seminars. Learn all about Applied Behavior Techniques (rehearse conversations/situations) and as your son grows he will need Cognititve Behavior Techniques. My son actually askes for CBT when he is feeling stressed. The diet may or may not work for your son. I had my son tested at the Childrens Hospital and he has no allergies or toxins, we tried the diet anyway and he didn't really respond. So, it works for some and not others. The key is find what works for your son and adapt as things change. If you do the hard work now, it will pay off later. Also, autismdigest.com, based out of Texas, subscribe to this magazine. I have read it for years. My son says "If there was a cure for Autism he wouldn't take it." Go online and get to work, K.

D.,

I don't have any experience in this but I have family members who have had the same diagnosis. The doctor who treated Jenny McCarthy's son (I read her book too) is in Dallas. If you pick up Dallas Child or Suburban Parent you will see his advertisement.

We too are not giving our son the MMR shot at 12 mths either and all his other shots we spread out so that he didn't get them all in one day. I really don't agree with the researcdh that these shots are not linked due to the increased cases of Autism so I figure better safe then sorry.

Good luck to you!
M.

D.,
My 17 year old is an Aspie. I agree with Karen B, I don't believe Asperger's and autism are the same and I hate to see them lumped together.

It isn't uncommon for a child with some kind of issue, to have multiple issues, so I don't find it odd that he has several.

Don't know about the vaccines... I agree there are too many and if you can get them spread out that's best and if you can not get some (I think Chicken Pox s/b optional, as should Hepatitis) then avoid them. But I really doubt that vaccines cause autism. I know others strongly disagree. Everyone has to do what they believe is right for their child.

I've been working on a site for Aspei's only. An on-line Aspie support group. It's not finished because I'm not that great at designing, but the idea was to create a one-stop shop for information on Aspie's. To re-direct you to other sites with more info etc.

It's called http://www.aspergershop.com/

I'll try to get it up really soon, because I keep running into people with kids who have Asperger's and to search thru the austims sites for Aspie specific info is daunting. So I want to make it easier with my site.

Hang in there and know that you are not alone. Feel free to PM me anytime.

Hi D.,

I have heard of a doctor that's having great success with autism and ADHD but I'm not sure about Aspergers. You are very wise to be cautious about vaccines. I am also familiar with several natural supplements that are very helpful in these areas. I'm running behind scedule for a workshop this morning or I would gather up all this info and email it right now. Call me if you are interested and I will find this info for you. ###-###-####
