Are Trampolines Safe?

My husband mentioned getting a big trampoline with the net that goes around it for our kids for Christmas. My kids are 6 and 3. I never had one growing up but my friends did and we had a blast on them. But, I always hear about kids falling off and getting hurt. Does the net really help? In my mind I'm just picturing all of the 'America's Funniest Home Videos' with the kids falling off of them. It makes me nervous when they jump on the bed sometimes but I don't want to be 'Nervous Nelly' all the time!

TIA!

What can I do next?

They are only as safe or unsafe as the person/s using it.

personally, I would let my 6 year on it to jump but I would not let my 3 year old on it to "play". They have to be able to understand the rules of jumping and being safe.

My 13yo ds has one since he was about 6 I think and I don't let my 3yo dd play on it. We will let her get on it sometimes with one of us holding her hand so to speak. ds also can not jump while she is running around the yard because she could go under it.
Anyone that "uses" it is informed of any rules and such the first time with parents permission same as when we were kids except back then we didn't need to ask parents everything.
We got a net but never put it up. It is still packed up in the garage somewhere.

My boys have one. We gave it to our son for his birthday back in February when he turned 6 (my youngest is also 3). We have the net and it has been very helpful. So far, no one has gotten hurt. Honestly, I don't worry about it too much when it's just the two of them. It's when their older cousins come over that I get nervous. My boys are very cautious and neither of them really gets to jumping too high. I enjoy doing it with them too. We have a swing set too, and they can get hurt on that too. They could get hurt riding their bikes or playing sports or in a bounce house or a swimming pool. There are lots of places kids could get hurt. You just have to be vigilant and teach them common sense and safety. If you do decide to get one, I highly recommend the net. I remember trampolines when I was growing up with no net or even without the guards over the spring part. It's amazing we ever survived the 80's! :)

I had one with a net. My homeowner's insurance wouldn't cover it. I've seen three major injuries in the ER from trampolines in the past two months. Major = more than one broken bone, long term restriction of activity due to back injury, or deforming facial injury.

I don't have one anymore.

We just saw a 2 yo in our dental office that hit her front teeth on something while jumping on a trampoline. They thought that one of the teeth were knocked out but when we took an x-ray it had been shoved so high up you could not see it. We have seen many dental injuries on all ages of kids from trampolines.

One of my best friends is an ER nurse, & she says they are evil. In her 15 years of working in an ER, she's seen so many children come in with severe injuries from trampolines.

Even with a net. Unless you are in gymnastics the risks could be to great. I get crazy looks all the time for not wanting my son on one. or telling parents not unless I am there. I lethim occaisionally, but there should never be more than one at a time.

E.,
We have a trampoline with a net on it and our kids love it. My daughter is 7 and in gymnastics that is why we got it. We have rules that everyone must abide to. Personally, I would not allow anyone to jump on mine unless they/parents signed a waiver stating that I/my homeowner's insurance would not be liable for any injuries resulting from them getting hurt on the trampoline. Our kids spend hours playing on it and I watch them closely. I know that there is the possibility of someone getting hurt but that is normal. Accidents do happen. If you allow your children to jump in bouncy houses, I see no difference between them and the trampoline.

You will have to use your own judgement on what is good for your kids. You do have to teach your children to jump and act responsible on it though.

Good Luck!

NO!!! They are very unsafe if you look on the Amercian Acad. of Pediatrics it list's trampolines as THE MOST deadly "toys" for kids ages 4-15. My brother in law is an ER Dr. & just flat out said thats one thing never to buy he sees so many accidents from that. The AAP recommends not using them & there are actually things going on to get them banned for public use due to the rise of deaths & spinal cord injuries. I don't agree with the person who wrote they are dangerous as a bike, there are so many other factors involved in bike accidents. I would say stay safe even though they seem fun, they are death traps, research it at least online I cut & copied the below from the American Acad. Of pediatrics website:

The trampoline should not be used at home, inside or outside. During anticipatory guidance, pediatricians should advise parents never to purchase a home trampoline or allow children to use home trampolines.
The trampoline should not be part of routine physical education classes in schools.
The trampoline has no place in outdoor playgrounds and should never be regarded as play equipment.

I grew up on a trampoline with no net and never got hurt. That said...it does not matter what you or your kids are doing....someone can get hurt.

We have a trampline as many of our neighbors do and all of the children love them. We do have a net. I have rules and if you are not following my rules...you go home...period.

My daughter (almost 14 now) uses it to practice her cheer routines. We've had it about 5 yrs and never had an issue.

I do understand that a lot of people do get hurt. Hey, we had one of the electric scooters and the first thing I did was wreck it. I broke my arm teaching my daughter how to roller skate at a skating rink. I was always a good skater. Things happen....

I would not refrain from getting one simply for fear of an injury. We al know how fast and simple injuries can occur. We have to be viligient as parents to make sure our kids are ok but they still need to be able to be a kid...I do symphathize with the earlier post from a mom who had a child with a broken arm.

We have had one with a net since my oldest was 2 (is 6 now). We haven't had any injuries with the trampoline. I can tell you that my kids LOVE it. My oldest would just run around at first, but did it for hours when we first got it. They both still play on it a bunch. I do have to watch them and keep them from running around the outside of it, but the same goes for the swingset. They climb to the TOP of that also :)

nope! there are enough simple ways around the house for my boys to break a bone or two. they have bikes/scooters and they wear head to toe padding for them. i won't allow them on one unless i'm supervising. it's a lawsuit or a broken bone just waiting to happen, when there are much safer ways to have just as much fun.

Hi E., I think the nets are pretty safe, but I wouldn't get one without a net, I know lots of people that have gotten hurt. I would have loved to have had one when I was younger, but back then there were no nets, we had a friend that broke their arm, so mom said no. Anyway, I think the net ones would be fine, just be careful. Have fun!

We have one we have the one with the net and you can even zip them in if you want. We have an almost 3 yr old and he is the only one that jumps in it he can't really jump out or anything like that and we stand at the opening when he is in it. He loves it! I think accidents happen but it really depends on you and your children. Good luck!
