Are There Any Other Meds Out There Other than Clomid?

A little info...Eight weeks ago I had a laproscopy done to remove two large cysts, one from each side and to remove most my stage 4 endometriosis. The doctor said that we had about 2 years to get pregnant again and strongly recomended that I go on Clomid to get pregnant ASAP. We are not too excited about me going on Clomid because we are very worried I may get pregnant with multiples. Now, eight weeks later, another cyst. I really would like for my son to have a brother or sister in the future so I have decided to see what all my options are before I quit trying to get pregnant again and go back on the pill or IUD. So my questions are...

Has anyone heard of someone else being on Clomid and not getting pregnant with multiples? We have 4 friends (just about everyone I know that has taken Clomid) and all have twins or triplets. Is there something new out there for the beginning steps of fert drugs that I may suggest to my doctor to try other than Clomid and Invetro?... Also, is it true, the smaller the ml dosage of Clomid the smaller the chance of having multiples? Thanks everyone's help!

So What Happened?

I appreciate everyone's input in helping me decide what to do in regards to Clomid. Well, it seems to be that Clomid is going to have to be put on hold regardless. I went to the dr yesterday and found out that I have two cysts again on both ovaries, 9 weeks after my operation! It was suggested to me to go on Lupron to make my cysts smaller and maybe help out with my endometriosis. Has anyone been on Lupron before? The side effects don't sound so great and I can't help myself to not be so excited about the treatment. Anyone get pregnant afterwards?...

I do not know about other drugs, I have only taken Clomid and the drugs necessary for invitro. I produced only 2 eggs on clomid each time and none of the attempts worked. Clomid did adjust my cycle, which was one of the benefits. I did get pregnant by invitro and carried a healthy baby girl. Good luck whatever you decide.

E.,

I've been on Clomid several times. They typically start you out at 50 mg. I had to go up to 150 mg to get pregnant with my first (single pregnancy), then went up to 200 mg to get pregnant with my second (also, a single pregnancy), back down to 150 mg with my third (single pregnancy). I moved and had a different ob/gyn and was 35 when I tried to get pregnant with my 4th child. Because of my age, my new ob/gyn was concerned about multiples so she suggested 50 mg. I had NEVER been able to conceive on such a low dose, but did after only 1 month and once again it was a single pregnancy. The first three pregnancies took several months to conceive. Hope that helps!

I used Clomid to get pregnant with my daughter after a miscarriage and only had one child. We started on the lowest dose possible and it worked on the first cycle. It is true that this drug (and any fertility drug, I would imagine) can produce multiples and I was a little worried about it too, but while it is a possibility, it isn't a certainty. I hope you find what works for you! Best of luck.

The way it was explained to me was at the smaller doses, it helps you to ovulate better, not necessarily more. So yor Dr should start you out on the smallest dose. (for us it didnt work, we ended up doing an IUI and had 1 baby)
I do know quite a few people who became pregnant with singletons off of clomid. Come to think of it, I don't know anyone who had multiples from clomid. I am sure you have; but have you used the ovulation kits? Or tried charting your temps? Best of luck to you!!

I know several people who had one baby on Clomid.
There is a way to assure you have one baby, but your doctor may or may not go for this: if you have an ultrasound before you ovulate, you can see how many follicles you have. If it's more than one, then you can skip trying that month. (Someone below said that a large follicle could turn into multiple eggs, so that's something else to consider.) The ultrasound may not be covered by insurance, and your doctor may tell you it's unnecessary (although some do them at this time), but it gives you a warning that multiples are possible if you go ahead with the cycle. It may take longer to get pregnant this way, because you're skipping months, and only letting yourselves try when there you think there's one egg.

Doctors try to give you just enough Clomid so that you ovulate. Chances are that he/she will start you out on the lowest dose.

Good luck! I took Clomid for aeveral months too, but then we realized that I had 2 blocked tubes, so that's another story. I hope it works for you and that you have only one baby!

I got pregnant with both of my daughters by taking clomid and only had one each time. It was the 3rd month with both of them. My problem was I didn't ovulate, it took 3 months, but it worked. On the 3rd month, both times, they doubled the dose, but I still only got pregnant with one. Good luck with what you decided. My youngest is fixing to turn 5 so I have been out of the loop with the meds for some time now.

Hi E.,

Just in case you do decide to take Clomid, I thought I'd share with you that we had a rough time with conceiving our second child and had to take Clomid for 3 cycles. My right side is blocked and my eggs were deemed not good quality anymore. So our Fertility doctor recommended me to take Clomid to boost the egg productivity. On the 3rd cycle he measure one egg and it was huge! He told me that's what could turn into twins. I had total of 3 eggs released with one very large one. We ended up with one beautiful girl. So not everyone gets multiples with Clomid. I was told Clomid has the lowest chance (like 13%) of multiples compared to other fertility drugs that has up to 33%. So hopefully if you end up taking Clomid, you will get what you wish for and no multiples!

Now I am pregnant again and it was total surprise to me and my husband since we thought we couldn't conceive naturally anymore so watch out for that! :)

Good luck!

Three pregnancies with Clomid- one baby each time( although I miscarried the middle one). The last pregnanacy without Clomid-twins (although I miscarried one of the twins very early on.) Twinning also occurs more commonly if you are older- my last baby I delivered when I was 42. Lots of people using Clomid are older mothers trying to get pregnant before time runs out-may be why you know so many Clomid twins. My oldest two Clomid babies are now 17 and 14 this week. This is not something to worry about. Good luck.

My 1st child was a Clomid baby. Just 1 baby & twins run in my family. I too was concerned about multiples when I started Clomid, but I read up on it & saw that there was only a 10% chance of getting pregnant with twins & even lower percentages for higher number multiples. I was taking the smallest dose at 1st. Also, maternal age is a factor, but since you're only 30, it shouldn't be that high a probability. The older you are, the more likely you are to conceive twins. Clomid makes you ovulate. So, really it's simply a matter of when you do ovulare, are you releasing one egg or two or more. It's not about the single fertilized egg dividing to create identical twins, as that (research shows) comes from the father's side. I would start out with the smallest dose. Everyone I know that has conceived with the help of Clomid has only had a singleton pregnancy. Best of luck!

I was on Clomid when I got pregnant with my daughter (just a single pregnancy) and I personally know two other people who were on Clomid and only had one child. I don't know what other options are out there, but maybe you could talk to your doctor about it?

Good luck!

I completely understand your hesitation to use Clomid. I too was concerned about the potential of having multiples from using it, but my Dr. shared that it only increases your chances from 1% to an 8% chance (twins). I have PCOS and Clomid was just what I needed to get pregnant. I took it with all three of my children and the result was 1 healthy baby each time!

God Bless~

E., I have 4 friends who have taken Clomid in the last 2 years. Not a single one has twins. I know the chances are higher that you can have multiples but my experience is different than yours; no one I know has had twins from Clomid. Talk to your doctor about the details and the chances of having twins. I want to say it is 20%. Don't quote me on that though.

I was on Clomid and I only had one beautiful girl. Chances for multiples on Clomid is actually a lot less than what you think. I did a lot of research before I took it and you should as well. There is a lot of information online. Good luck.

Hi E.,
Have you considered going all natural?

You would need to educate yourself on this method, but I have suggested this to many women, they have had great success with it.

You can get any of these books at the library or any good book store....A Cure for All Disease by Dr.Hulda Clark, Todays Herbal Health Essential Reference Guide by Louise Tenney M. H., these would be the first place I would suggest you start your education.

Hope this helps
Blessings

My friend who did Invetro had twins and she said when using Clomid nowadays you can control the outcome so much more than before. She did invitro b/c she couldn't get preg. w/clomid..she also did the iud or whatever it's called (turkey baster one..)

Hi E.,

I understand your situation. It's a huge gamble knowing the risk of multiples. I opted for a natural (without drugs)IUI cycle but prior to the start of my cycle my new OB/GYN asked me to reconsider. I have a fibroid in my uterus that he would like to surgically remove prior to attempting to get pregnant. I would definitely make sure you have a good dr that is not afraid to terminate the IUI cycle if there are too many follicles.

I went on one 'round' of Clomid in 2006 and in 2007 gave birth to one sweet baby girl. My mom swore I'd have twins even though she never knew I went on Clomid, just because she said twins run on both sides of my family.
I don't know anyone else personally that has taken Clomid, so I can only offer my experience. You could try asking your doctor if they can give you any numbers from their clinic on how many women on Clomid had multiples vs. how many didn't.
Good Luck!

I have a friend with PCOS who started taking Clomid about 1.5 years ago. She was unable to get pregnant for two years, then had two miscarriages, and finally started on Clomid. It worked on the second try and she only has ONE healthy baby boy who is 7 months now!

I was on clomid at the age of 37 for about 9 months after a miscarriage. My dr scheduled an appointment with both my husband and I to advise us that our next best thing would be a fertility specialist and that the clomid was not working. 30 days later however I ended up pregnant with only 1 child. I had 2 miscarriages after and by my age then the Dr would not even do clomid again. None the less I have 1 very special child. Just something to think about.

I am 9 weeks pregnant and was on Clomid. I am only having 1 and 4 months ago I miscarried when I got pregnant on Clomid (nothing to do with the med) and it was only 1 baby then as well. My doctor told me there is only a 10% chance of multiples if using Clomid and your chances are going to be greater if you have twins in the family or are very fertile to begin with. I also had cysts on my ovaries and the only thing that suppressed them until I wanted to get pregnant was a very high dose of Birth control. After my 1st child though, I haven't had any problems with cysts anymore. Good luck with your decision.
