Hi ladies. It's been quite some time but I always get good advice here.

What's good (or what should I stay away from) in the world of appliances? I don't have much information to provide as this is all new for me. I'm looking for advice on refrigerators, stoves (electric), and dishwashers. I don't have some ridiculous budget, nor am I brand loyal but I'd like something nice. Any advice would suffice. :) Thanks a bunch.

What can I do next?

Whirlpool right now is the best, followed by GE then Frigidaire. Kenmore is made by all of the above, they just put their names on them. Appliances are not made like they used to be so no matter which brand yiu choose you will likely have to have.it serviced within the first year. Buy an extended warranty they come iN handy!

been in the appliance service business for 7 years. The reps themselves even say they are made more for looks than quality! Which is ridiculous but true.

We have a Maytag washer and dryer that we purchased 8 years ago and have not had any problems at all (no service calls). We bought them at Lowe's and when they came out to the house the ones we purchased wouldn't fit into the laundry room. We had 2 master baths - one large and one small and we never used the 2nd one as it was small so we had it turned into a small laundry room. Well, Lowe's was so gracious to come out and return both the washer and dryer and told us to come into the store and pick out ones that would work in that limited space AND didn't charge us a cent for the extra delivery, etc. We love Lowe's.

We have a Frigidaire refrigerator that we purchased 6 years ago and when they delivered it, I noticed that it wasn't keeping the food as cold as I felt it should so they replaced it and this one is no better. Also had a problem with the water on the door getting clogged so had to have a service call to get it running properly so I wouldn't recommend the Frigidaire brand. You have some excellent advice from the other ladies though and I've learned a lot reading their posts. Thanks for asking.

If you can, go and see them in person and run your hand around the edges, and surface to feel for smoothness. Ive had a cheap stove and everytime I cleaned it, Id cut my hand on the edge of the metal body. See how easy they are to clean. Do the burners come out, can you clean under them, does the door come off, how do the knobs come off to clean. Does the surface feel smooth or gritty. Does the side of the fridge go up against a wall? A side by side might not open wide enough to get things in and out of the freezer section? If so, you might want a different style.(feezer on top or bottom, french doors) Is the microwave going to be installed over the stove? Make sure the microwave is high enough (not just to code, but higher) so you can see the controls of the stove if they are behind the burners. Or get a stove with burners in front or to the side so you can see and reach them without burning yourself when cooking on the stove top at the same time. Is there a bottom drawer for storage on the oven or is that the broiler? Is the oven/stove a slide in, free standing or drop in style? What are the countertops in the home? This all makes a difference to what type of stove works best for installation. Im dealing with some of these problems in the new house we just moved into. Little things we never noticed while buying this home, but found to be a problem the first time I cooked once we moved in. I can barely reach food in the freezer because the door wont open wide enough due to the wall next to it. I am tall so its hard to bend down and look at the back of the stove top to turn on the oven because the microwave is so low and I cant see past it. Im shopping for a new stove and refridgerator now. This was something we thought we wouldnt need to do when we found this house with all its new appliances.
ADDED: also be aware that Bosch is a very good/expensive brand, but their dishwashers are smaller than others and have a strange rancid oil smell when done washing. I had to ask why ours smells so bad and the appliance repairman said, Bosch is known as the "stinky" dishwasher because of this. I miss my old dishwasher.

I know that one thing to look for is the Energy rating. Sometimes an appliance that is more energy efficient is cheaper in the long run. Also, know what size you need and measure where it will be installed so you know it will fit the space properly. Make a list of the features you want it to have, and don't pay extra for things you won't use.

I've had very good luck with Whirlpool or Maytag products. I have a Hotpoint stove that works great. I also have a GE refrigerator that is very old, but works great. I've heard that Samsung products are awesome, but I only have a Samsung microwave, not a big appliance. Stay away from cheap off brands. I would check epinions or ratings on websites for stores where you get appliances. If you do buy a new appliance though, please check with your local energy company to see if they offer a rebate. I recently found out that as long as your old appliance is still working, some energy companies offer recycle programs where they will come to your house, haul away your old appliance for free and send you a rebate check for like $40. It's worth looking into!

We just got a KitchenAid dishwasher to replace the Kennmore that was in the house when we bought the house, the Kennmore did not clean the dishes at all we even had a repair man look at it and there was nothing wrong with it it just sucked. Our stove is a GE glass top and so is our side by side fridge. I have never had any issues with either of these. As with cars you can get a lemon with any brand, look at what features are most important for you then look at the brands. We got our KitchenAid on sale at Lowes they delivered and hauled off the old one too. We also LOVE our Samsung front load washer/dryer if you are ever in the market for those.

When we went shopping for a dishwasher, the guy at Home Depot told us that all the brands had various price points but within each brand they were essentially the same mechanically -- only the "bells and whistles" were different. So any Maytag you get, for example, will be the same quality as any other Maytag. The less expensive ones just have less features.

I was just talking about appliances yesterday. It's funny that Jackie P mentioned Kenmore as being good. My oldest daughter bought a fridge, dishwasher, glass top stove, and clothes washer and dryer from Sears 5 yrs ago. When the appliances were delivered the delivery guys dented the fridge so another one had to be delivered. They also put a dent in the washer but it was small and since that's in the basement my son in law decided to let it go.

The dishwasher broke over this past summer and it was cheaper to get a new one on clearance than to have it repaired. The washer has been fixed twice due to bad computer boards, the dryer has also been repaired, and the fridge continues to leak water out of the filter and the sears techs have no idea why after 3 service trips.

Customer service is terrible with every repair scheduled about 10 days from the day you call. You know because you can really do without a washer for 10 days when you have a family of 5. When my daughter called she told the person what the problem was and yet the tech came out without a new computer board so one had to be ordered, took 4 days to arrive and another 6 days for the tech to come back and install it. 20 days without a clothes washer.

The fan in the fridge crapped out a couple weeks ago so my son in law bought the part himself and replaced it instead of waiting over a week for sears to come out, not have the part, and have to come back. Terrible service.

We've had the best of luck using Home Depot for appliances. Delivery is scheduled and very professional.

We have Kenmore Elite, but the regular Kenmore is just as good. My hubby insisted on getting the higher end for resale value (if we ever decide to sell the house). I have the electric stove with the dual oven. That was one feature that I really wanted, it doesn't take as long to heat the smaller top oven to make cookies, pizza etc. I opted out of the dual draw dishwasher, because if you have something large like a platter it won't fit.
I think most of the brands are fine, it's just that some have more user options than others. You have to consider how much you use each appliance. For example, I like the french door refrigerators. They offer more space inside and you can fit large items with no problem. My hubby likes the water and ice dispenser on the door where I really didn't mind not having it.
Find a website that lets you compare the different brands along with the features. This will help you decide what will work best for your family. You can also look up reviews.
