Anyone Used the Rug Doctor

I recently got a dog and want to clean the carpets but am on the Dave Ramsey plan so I can't afford a carpet cleaning service. Has anyone used the Rug Doctor and does it provide better results than an at-home steam cleaner. I do have a steam cleaner but it hasn't gotten out some of the stains. Thanks Mamas.

What can I do next?

I have used Pet Smart solutions but the other day I got from Home Depot a 7-One spot remover and it seems to be just as good. My carpets are almost white a very light grey and every thing the dog does shoes which really makes it easier to know and clean. I also have a home cleaner and clean the carpets almost weekly but was told that is not good for the backing on the carpets. I have a dog and Home Day Care and even not wearing shoes in the house gets dirty. I would try that spot remover and steam cleaner. Test first a place in the closet then proceed. Good luck. My carpets look great after 6 yrs but I grabbed a bleach instead of the carpet stain spray bottle and now have a couple of light spots in the hall. I have extra carpeting and some day will have a section replaced. Good Luck G. the Home Depot was about $8 and Pet Smart $20.

We co-rented one with a friend of ours several months back and were really pleased with the results. I too would recommend using the bissel cleaning solution (big green bottle), and for stains, I recommend the bissel pre-treatment spray (in the blue bottle). Both can be purchased at Walmart, Target, etc. I think the bissel cleaning solution is also at Sam's and/or Costco, or at least it used to be. The friend I co-rented the machine with used a different cleaning solution and didn't have near as good the results as we did.

Blessings,
N.

Ive rented the one from walmart when we used to live in apartments and I could turn horrible looking carpet into brand new carpet with it. I think there are a few tricks. I would use the Bissell pet cleaner that you buy at walmart in a gallon jug back by the vacums instead of the kind they sale with the carpet cleaner. Make sure the water you put inside the machine is as hot as you can make it but not boiling, and any really bad spots pour hot water on it before hand. Good Luck!

I never liked renting a machine because I felt like they were dirty and I was getting someone's dirt in my house.

You say you have a steam cleaner? What kind? I am on my 3rd Bissell Pro Heat (3rd because I use it a lot. I get a new one every 3 yrs or so). I LOVE this machine.

We have 3 dogs....Before I use my machine, I pre-treat any areas. I use the aerosol can of ZEP from Home Depot (about $4). I have managed to get red wine, dog vomit off my almost carpet.

My way of doing this is not the most popular but it WORKS.

I spray the stain with ZEP. Blot up. THEN, I place a solid white paper towel on the leftover wet spot. I put a hot iron on the paper towel and steam the rest out. IT STINKS...but it works.

THEN, I use my steamer. My steamer has a hot water heater on it. Make sure the water you use is as hot as you can get it. I also use the Hoover brand of carpet cleaner for pet stains $25/bottle but lasts a long time and worth it.

I do my ZEP routine when I have a stain pop-up/spills between carpet cleaning times as well.

Good luck!

We've used it and gotten good results, we used their cleaning solution. We also went over it a 2nd time with the suction function to draw out as much water as we could. It's heavy though so my husband did most of the cleaning. (Not such a bad thing ha-ha!)

I have a steam cleaner also and I sometimes have to use resolve or something like that before the steamer. Also some of the detergents are better than others. I think the one made by hoover is better, I bought it at walmart. Good Luck with carpet cleaners and with Dave Ramsey, he's really good.

We just did it, and we were quite happy with the results. Shocked actually that it took as much up as it did. So I say..go for it! Enjoy:) ~A.~

I have used the Rug Doctor a few times, and it is probably about equal to steam clearners that I have had. It might be a bit more powerful, but if you have a steam cleaner already, I wouldn't waste your money on a Rug Doctor. I really don't think you will see much of a difference.
