Although I dont have personal experience with Hypnobirthing I used self-hypnosis and it worked very well. I was so relaxed when my doctor came in she thought someone had drugged me. Because the effectiveness of hypnosis depends upon motivation, commitment and practice some may report that it doesnt work.
I used a self-hypnosis recording daily during my pregnancies & labors that allowed me to experience natural childbirth. Self-hypnosis is a tool that you develop into a skill.
Thanks to the media's portrayal childbirth as excruciating and other womens' 'war stories' women fear childbirth today more than ever. Extreme fear sets off a reaction that can cause the body to shut down. Hypnosis is very effective for clearing fearful thoughts. Its use can make for a more peaceful pregnancy and childbirth experience.

i did the hypnobabies self-study course before my VBAC last June. it takes a bit of practice and dedication. my birth was drug and intervention free and at UIC. however, i found that i relied more on my mom for labor support than the formal hypnosis techniques, but I did a lot of self centering, focusing on breathing etc that they teach you. Did it "work"? I suppose that depends on what you mean. I never doubted myself or my ability to have a natural birth even once, never thought "O can't do this" a single time. Was my birth pain-free? No. There were parts that were very uncomfortable and extremely physically intense. It was the hardest work I've ever done. But the whole experience was 100% worth it and the feeling of pushing my baby into my waiting hands was amazing. I would love to do it all over again.

People who are hypnobirth instructors swear it works but anyone I know who used it said they forgot it all when reality sunk in. So, I guess just based on hearsay, the answer would be NO. But I will tell you what works without fail, from first hand experience. I did waterbirthing and laboring. It works so well without drugs or anything. It actually is not painful, just hard work and pressure. But I would do it again in a blink.

I have heard the same things as the PP. I thought about ordering the book and cd on amazon, but decided against it. Dr. Sears The Birth Book and Childbirth without Fear are two great books that I have read. I am due in 1 month, so we'll see if they help.
