Anyone Live or Drive by the Rosemount Refinery Area?

We would like to buy a new house in the south east suburbs within the next year. My husband would like Mendota Heights or Eagan, but I am wondering fif we go out a little more as far east as Rosemount if the prices would get any cheaper for a nicer house. My question is does the odor of the reinery make any of you sick to your stomach, nauseaiated feeling? Enough that you need to keep your windows shut in warmer months? Even just driving by there to go to Rochester, it often makes me want to gag! Is it just something you get used to? Can you smell it if you are outside playing with the kids in the yard? What about surrounding cities down there, can you smell it?
I don't want to look in that area if a person never really gets acclimated to that enviroment. Thanks!

I leave in on the souteast side of Eagan, about 7-10 miles away from the refinery. My kids go to school at St. Joseph's in Rosemount and we spend a lot of time in Rosemount shopping, sports etc. I NEVER smell the refinery unless I am actually driving right by it. And I rarely have an occasion to drive that way anyway. Rosemount has many wonderful new neighborhoods at reasonable prices and the schools are also great. The home costs in Rosemount would definitely be less than something comparable in Eagan, you would get more for your money. I think Rosemount is a wonderful place to raise a family. We have made many friends here and I can't imagine living anywhere else! My sister is actually moving to Rosemount this spring. Happy house hunting:)

HI Cheri!

I have not heard much about the smell in Rosemount. I have sold a few homes out there without that concern. I guess it would depend on how close you are to the refinery. I know the refineries can get pretty bad near St. Paul Park & Newport. I had a family move out of St. Paul Park because they could not take it anymore but each person is different. If you really like Eagan or Mendota Hts. now is a good time to look because home values have changed this past year. Please let me know if I can be of help. I am a Realtor w/ RE/MAX & live in Mendota Hts.

Good Luck!

Patty

We lived in Rosemount for 9 years and I never remember having a problem with smells from the refinery.

I can't say that I know much about the Rosemount area, although I know people who live there and like it. We built in Cottage Grove 3 years ago, and really like it here, plus it was much more affordable then the Eagan area and others like it. Hope that helps!

I can't smell it and I live in Southern Inver Grove Heights. I only smell it when I drive by it on 55. Hope this helps.

I live in Eagan - about as close to the refinery as you can get and still be in Eagan - and I have never (in 14 years) smelled it. I have smelled it when driving by it on Hwy. 55, but never from my house. I've never heard anyone complain about it, either.

Good luck.

Cheri-
I lived in Inver Grove Heights for several years, and sometimes the smell was disgusting-it was the worst in the summer and during really hazy, foggy or humid days. It literally made you gag. We have since moved to the Mendota Heights/West St. Paul area, and are really happy here. Good luck!
