I was just prescribed this and was wondering has ANYONE ever taken it IF SO did you do ok on it? I got the med today and on the top it said do not nurse WELL GUESS WHAT I DO. lol SO NOW WHAT? I am still going to start it tomorrow the pharmacy said that it has the effect to sometimes give you a rash and could pass to baby well he is 14 mo and does not nurse but 3 times a day but still would be in my system. I am taking it for seizures and also HOPING it will help with my depression as well. I am out of Zoloft and they said that this can help with depression as well and I did research it and it is for Bi Polor patient s as well so we will see. Just thought I would see if anyone has ever taken it.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I have been on it for about 3 days and OH am I tired lol. I take naps when the kids do and am MORE tired when I wake up it seems which stinks. I watch another 4 yr old girl and have 3 in the night time instead of just my 2 and OH it is a HUGE change from 2 lol. Any way the Dr called and I told her how I was and she said it was OKAY to nurse him so that put a HUGE relieve on me. I have a headache as I type and STILL tired I also have a sore throat so I MIGHT be trying to get a cold who knows. Anyway that is what is going on as of now. I hope it kicks in and starts to do better for me. I know I am NOT as grouchy as I have been so that is good for the kids and hubby lol....

I have never used that medication. The med I take for seizures is Noroton (sp) and I know you can't take that with a baby. If the greatest concern is a rash spreading to your baby from you, you could consider pumping milk for your little one and see if your medication appears to affect him.
I did look it up on Web md, and it says it is a common med for Bi-Polar and Seizures. It also list side effects and other info. http://www.webmd.com/epilepsy/lamotrigine-for-epilepsy I hope that link appears for you to click on.
Best of Luck and I hope it all works out.

Hey! I was on lamictal for quite a while for my depression. It was combined with another antidepressant. Lamictal is used as more of a mood stabilizer. But on that and another antidepressant it helped me a lot. Lamictal might help you on your own, i don't know. That's something you should talk to your doctor about. As well as the nursing thing. I am just now having my first baby so that was never a concern of mine. Good luck

Hello
I do not have to worry about nursing any more my boy's are 3 and 5 but that is a problem with EVERYTHING!!!!!! I take Topamax. It is a seizure med that I take for my migraines . I will tell you that it made me down right STUPID for about two months. Most side effects can take two to three months to work themselves through your system. Good luck with the med and I hope it works for you. I still have to take two pills.....the other I call the Happy pill :-) Hopefully when both boys are in school full time I can back off on that pill.I would call your Doc first thing to double check.

I'd contact a lactation consultant and see what they say. I don't like to put anything in my kids' system, but seizures are serious, as can be depression, so it's a hard choice. Force weaning when you aren't ready can be very hard, but if it's the difference between your being healthy or not, it may be a better choice.
Good Luck!

Yes, I was on Lamictal before I got pregnant with our youngest. It is NOT suggested for use during pregnancy or nursing. I would call your doctor ASAP and ask them for an alternative medication that is compatible with nursing. I'm bipolar and they use it for a mood stabilizer. It's a pretty heavy drug. But don't just stop taking it. You have to be weaned off of it, or you can have some serious withdrawal symptoms. So check with your doctor first.

M.,
I'm also on Lamictal for Epilepsy. I'm not sure where you live or how long you have been living with Epilespy. First of all, if you have not already, I would call your pedriatrition. My neuro tried to tell me I could take Keppra while nursing and the pediatrition immediately said no. They are the ones that know about nursing, not neuros. As far as Lamicatal goes, I haven't been having too many side effects with it. If you have been on many AED's you will know that they all have side effects. This one seems to be working for me. I also have been having some depression and when I go to the neuro on Friday I think they will be increasing my dose. I have been trying to find a support group in the Columbus IN area. Do you live near here? I've made contact with the Epilepsy Foundation of Indiana and I'm trying to get some things going in the area. It is very slow going. I cannot drive right now b/c I'm not considered "controlled". I'm supposed to be able to drive again on Dec. 6th as long as things continue as they have for the past 4 1/2 months. I haven't been able to drive since Nov. 2007. Anyway, I've rambled on long enough! You only asked about nursing and I've went on and on! Talk to the pediatrition and see what they say! If you are interested in talking to me, my email is ____@____.com

Hi, I've been on Lamictal for seizures (200 mg/day) since 2003 and haven't had a single side effect, except, perhaps being tired, but I'm also a mother of two, so it's hard to know. I have had one of my daughters since being on the medication. Throughout the pregnancy, they had to check my levels and was increased to 400 mg/day, but after I gave birth I quickly dropped back down to 200 mg/day. I DID breastfeed my daughter until 13 months and she didn't have any side effects either. I don't know your exact prescription. I take a rather low dose, but I was specifically put on Lamictal because my doctor said it is the safest epilepsy drug to be on during pregnancy and lactation. Talk to your doctor, however, because every person is different. Also, my husband is on it for depression and his only side effect has been slight trouble sleeping...no rash for either of us.
All the best! N.

My ex takes Lamictal for bipolar disorder and it definately has more possible side effects than just a rash. I would talk to your doctor again before taking this. Maybe they didn't think about you nursing when he/she perscribed it to you. Web MD always has good information on meds and their side effects too. I would check out their website too if you can't get ahold of your doctor right away. www.webmd.com

I have been on lamictal for about 4 years. It has worked great for me and controled my seizures. The only side effect I have is headaches. I have a 3 year old daughter, and I was put on the lamictal right before I got pregnant with her. My doc said that was the safest one to be on. When she was born, she did have a rash all over her body, but they were never able to determine what caused it. They rambled off a luge list of possibility's, but really didn't focus on the lamictal. She had the rash about 4 days.I was told not to nurse, however. Hope this helps!
