Anyone Having Trouble with the Rotavirus Vaccine

I was just wondering if anyone else has been having trouble with the new rotavirus vaccine for babies. My son is 4 months old and has had this oral vaccine twice now and both times he gets horribly gassy and cranky. This vaccine wasn't available when my daughter was younger, so I don't have anything to compare it to. I think he will get his last dose of it in 2 months and want to be prepared for it.

What can I do next?

Hi S.,
I read a great book about vaccines called The Sanctity of Human Blood: Vaccination is not Immunization, which is available at www.thedoctorwithin.com, it really helped me cement the decision not to vaccinate my own daughter.
Best,
E.

I don't know much about the vaccine, but my niece got the virus when she was 5 months old (and never even had a cold) and passed it to everyone else in the family - except me (apparently I am immune). I was caring for 5 VERY sick adults and an even sicker infant who was almost admitted into the hospital. I was told not to give her formula or anything with a formula/milk product in it. She had to be kept upright and spent nearly a week in her carseat for fear she would vomit and choke/drown in it if she was laid down flat. That was the scariest week for the whole family...and I have never done so much laundry in my life!!!

My son just had it and he was a lil gassy. Now my oldest had the 1st serious of the vacation and right after the pulled it and he had the runs with it. This one is supposed to be better.

S.,
It sounds like a definite reaction to the vaccine. It is possible to request a titer before proceeding with the last dose. It's completely possible that he might have a strong enough resistance already built up from the first two doses that he might not need the last.

Just a thought. Good luck!

I agree with Juleen. My daughter had the virus and it was so scary. We ended up in the ER with her screaming uncontrolably! I would put up the the gasyness and crankness over that any day. She was in the hospital for 3 days and it took her awhile to get back to a normal diet and everything. I don't think she reacted to the vaccine but she did get the virus even though she had the vaccine. So just watch he doesn't get dehydrated. Hope that helps

Hi S.,
Take the time to check out this website: www.vaclib.org

In just a quick research of the rotavirus vaccine, here is a little bit of what I found out:
The rotavirus vaccine was approved by the FDA and recommended by the ACIP, AAP and CDC despite an increased rate of intussusception, a rare bowel disease, occurring in initial vaccine trials. According to the CDC's own previously published studies, intussusception occurred 30 times more in recently vaccinated infants than in those who were unvaccinated. Despite the clinical proof of this vaccine being unsafe, the CDC and FDA sanctioned its widespread use in 1998. It was finally pulled off the market this past fall but not until dozens of infants who received the rotavirus vaccine had to undergo surgery to correct this rare bowel disorder.

I would reconsider your decision to continue with the 3rd treatment of the vaccination - as well as many others. Be informed - take time and do your research.

I have no experience w/ the vaccine, but I DO have experience w/ the virus! Trust me, the virus is AWFUL!! No fussy, cranky, bad gas can compare to the virus itself. It is AWFUL!! My son got it when he was about 6 months old and ended up in the hospital dehydrated. I went thru about 24 diapers a day!!! He was soooo sick it broke my heart. Did I mention it was AWFUL? Hang in there w/ the vaccine!!! Good luck on the next dose
