Anyone Have Child Who's Had a Frenulumectomy? Son's Tongue Tied

Has anyone had a child go thru surgery for a frenulumectomy? My four year old son is tongue tied and is having his frenulum clipped on Monday. He has had speech delays but has made great progress in the past year. He is unable to lift his tongue up so he just can't make certain sounds. I was wondering what the recovery is like and if anyone has seen improvements in their childs speech after this procedure.

Thanks

So What Happened?

Carter did awesome! He had no stitches and was eating pancakes two hours later. He's already practicing sticking out his tongue as far as he can. Thanks for all the advice.

I do not personally have a child who has had a frenulumectomy, but I have worked with multitudes of children who have. (I am an orofacial myologist/oral myofunctional therapist in the area and dentists and physicians refer children to me to work with re: this issue). There is an excellent resource on the web that many parents are not aware of. Not only are there extensive narratives on this topic but videos. Some are quite graphic, but are certainly very informative! Dr. Brian Palmer, a dentist who is highly educated and knowledgeable in this area, is considered one of the leading researchers in the country on frenulum attachments and their possible complications related to breastfeeding, tongue thrust (orofacial myofunctional issues), and palatal development. In fact, I just came back from the Orofacial Myology convention and he spoke for several hours on this topic and received a standing ovation. His website is:

Good luck to all.

My son had this done at 2 weeks old. It was a speedy recovery, and now, over 2 years later, you would never know the difference. :-)

My oldest son had this surgery at about 2 years. They said 48 hours recovery it was more like 2 weeks. AFter 48 hours he was better but definitely not back to "normal" It was definitely dealying his speech. We had him in speech therapy for 2 years and it did wonders. I am not sure where you are going we went through CHildrens Memorial which i highly recommend! Good luck he will be fine and have mcuh improvement once he is able to figure out how to use his new tongue!! :)

E.,

I haven't had this experience yet, but my daughter may have to. The dr. said that most children's tongues grow enough by 2 yrs that they don't need to have it done. She watched my daughter and found that she can say her th sounds so the dr. isn't worried. When we saw the pediatric dentist he said he was worried about being able to get food out from between the cheek and gums. Now we're looking into this too. If you could let me know how things go for your son I'd appreciate it. From what I understand if it's going to be done, then the child really needs it. Good luck to you and your son.

Hi, E.,

My son had this done, but he was a newborn. He had trouble latching on, which was the lactation consultant's first clue. My pediatrician confirmed that doing the frenulumectomy would probably help, and it did. They also told me it would help with his speech later on. It was a very minor procedure for a newborn, and he was fussy afterward, but healed within a few days. As out of it as I was in the hospital, I remember being so worried about doing this to him. I am not one who is big on any type of surgery unless it is absolutely necessary. Hope this helps at least a bit!

Good luck to you!
Laurie

the mouth heals extremely fast after about 3 days he will be doing exercises to retrain the muscles of the tongue
put tip of tongue to roof of mouth then open mouth as big as he can, poking his cheek with his tongue, clucking, try to touch his nose called elephant tongue, sing la la la da da da ta ta ta , try to touch his chin

these exercises will be the success after the frenectomy
