My 2 year old son has had many sinus infections or he may just have had one long one that has not resolved. They have done Rocephin injections...they have done long rounds of antibiotics. Nothing has worked. They are now recc. sinus surgery but it's somewhat controversial in kids this age. Some ENTs don't do it under any circumstances as they feel children may grow out of them. However, my son has a problem with his immune system as well and I'm wondering if he will ever grow out of them and what we are supposed to do in the meantime. He cannot continue to take massive amounts of antibiotics as it could affect his liver and kidneys.
Has anyone out there had sinus surgery done on a child in this age group? Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks!
I don't know, but if you would like then name of an ENT for a second opinion, I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Neelish Mehendale at ENT of Texas in Centennail Medical Pavillion. He did my daugthers adenoinds and my sons tubes and is the BEST. You will love him, and I value his opinion. Sometimes a different set of eyes can give a fresh perspective. Good luck.
My son and daughter at the time my son was 3 and my daughter 4 they had their ear tubes, tonsils and adnoids removed same day adn did great they constatnyl were getting sick before ths surgery. Then about 5 months after this surgery my son had to have a sinoplasty done. It was a bit difficult the day after surgery cause he had to go back to the doctors office to have his nose suctioned out. Yuck! And it took the whole office to hold him so we could do it. Strong little boy but now he laughs about it. ever since they had the surgeries though they haev not ben sick near as much. They are 7 and 6 years old now. I recommend to go ahead and get the surgery done if you are confidant with the ENT and trust them.

i also recomend dr biavati. he has done surgery on 2 of my daughters. my youngest daughter has had 3 sets of tubes and tonsils and adenoids removed, starting at 2 yrs old. my older daughter has had tonsils and adenoids removed, and has had spheniod sinus surgery at age 6. any ?'s let me know. S.
My 10 year old was recommended for this when he was 3. I went for a 2nd opinion since this surgery is such a rough surgery. The ENT - in FW and associated with Cooks - said he thought all his sinus infections were due to allergies and to start there. If that wasn't the problem or didn't clear it up, THEN he would look at surgery. Well - my son is allergic to almost all trees & grass, dog dander, mold, etc ! We did allergy shots & meds and his sinus infections quit. I would highly recommend seeing a allergist and checking into food and/or environmental allergies before I would agree to surgery.
Have you tried taking him to an immunologist? I don't have any experience with child sinus surgeries, but my husband has had multiple surgeries as an adult and still has cronic problems. Google "empty nose syndrome" and read up on it. It could be a possible side effect from surgery that your ENT probably never mentions to you. Its caused when, during surgery, they remove turbinate tissue in the nose sometimes in order to access where they need to go (in my husbands case). Not sure of their function, but I know that turbinates are very important part of your sinus. It seems to me with someone so small, they would probably have to remove alot of that tissue just to be able to access his sinus cavity. Hope this helps with your decision.
My daughter use to get strep infections one after another, and she was always on a round of antibiotics. She had her toncils and adnoids taken out at 4, and now gets sinus infections plus strep. So it did not good. The older she got, the further apart they got. It is now down to two-three times a year. Have you looked into a natural way to help clear it up. His body needs to kick in and fix itself. My pediatrician will let an infection ride for a little while having me use saline, fruits and humidifiers. Also, two warm baths a day help. My 3 year old always use to get ear infections and they wanted to do tubes. I said no for two years we battled with ear infection after infection. We did the shots and all. Finally, when he was close to 2 and a half, he started to get better. He would get a few sinus problems, but that was because of our air filters, and the carpet. He was allergic to the dander it held. He has been ear infection free for over a year now.
I would just ask another opinion before you go forward.

I would suggest visiting Dr. Michael Biavati & his partner in Plano or Dr.'s Bauer and Murray in Coppell. They are pediatric ENT surgeons and after working with them during my training, I know they are VERY conservative about sinus surgery in children. You are correct, sinus surgery is reserved for extraordinary cases in these age groups.

My friend's lil' guy was a little older, maybe 3 and was getting the same thing....I think he stayed on antibiotics for 20 days at a time several times in a row and ended up having the surgery. The next fall, he still had the chronic infections. She ended up taking him to Dr. Bain, a pedi in Frisco, and she did some testing and found out he was intolerant to the foods he ate everyday....she took the foods out and he had an amazing season this year.....we did the same thing but it was for ear infections....not an ear infection since.
