Anyone Have a Different Explanation of Dd's Strange Vomitting Pattern?

11 days ago, our family went out to eat and the next morning, when I went in to my 18 month old's room to get her, she had vomitted at some point in the night, but continued to sleep. No noises/crying,etc She was completely fine the next day and night. Then, the third night, the same thing. I called our peds nurse and she said to limit dairy, it was probably a bug. I did. It continued. This went on, with my daughter barfing every other night for 10 days. The following week, one morning she barfed, but then did it again twice after she was awake. She had a sligt temperature and seemed sick. This was followed by some diarrhea that afternoon, but my dd was asking for food and drink and acting completely normal within hours. The next day I took her in the pediatrician, anyway, because the stomach bug didn't explain the 10 days prior, having thrown up in the middle of the night for now reason. I mentioned possible reflux, even though she had never had any problems as an infant or anything. Then, the doc suggested that if it didn't stop within the next couple of days, we may need to do testing to see if there was any increased fluid/pressure in her brain. I hadn't thought of that and the last few days I've been freaking out.....a little.....a lot. It would make sense that with her in a horizontal position, the pressure would build. My dd is very verbal and tells me when she hurts (tummy, feet - shoes too tight, etc.) So, I think she would have told me if her head hurt. She's also not showing any signs of dizziness or loss of balance. I don't think it's diet, since I started keeping an diary and found nothing that stood out. It's hard to think that a stomach bug would take 10 days to present itself, especially since she was completely fine after the middle-of-the-night vomit. I was hoping there was someone out there who knew of someone who's child had done this and it was a fluke. Or, turned out, it was reflux that presented at 18 months. Or, this is how they learned their child had a brain tumor. I don't care what the story is, I want to hear it. I'm going crazy, sitting here, thinking of what if's and it could be this........I have three possibilites right now-fluke, reflux or tumor. Any thoughts? Thank you so much!!!

What can I do next?

My initial gut reaction is that she's got some sinus drainage making her belly icky. My daughter throws up just from sinus drainage (done this since about age 2)... Especially during her seasonal allergy time. It's not consistant, it seems to be completely unexplained, and during the day she was normal as could be. Also, this could be the beginning of a sinus infection... That would explain a slight fever along with the irratic vomiting.

Oh... And if she doesn't seem stuffy at all... Doesn't necessarily mean that she isn't getting some drainage while laying down.

If it's something like this.... Nada to worry about.

Hope that helps a little. : )

I agree w/ Mechanic Mama. Sinus drainage can cause upset stomach or vomitting. It would also explain her seeming fine and it being sporadic in nature. My daughter has now been on Clariton for 6 months for exactly that.

If dairy is the issue it sometimes takes a few weeks to get it out of her system.

This would happen with my son whenever he has a sinus infection as well.

Both of my kids just had a nasty stomach bug that sounds a lot like what you are describing. Pediatrician told me that it lasts at least a month and some kids with weakened immune systems have had it even longer. My son had it for almost 3 weeks and was STARVING until he would eat and then it would make him sick. We finally did the BRAT diet and it seems to be letting up though we are only just working soup back into his diet. Good luck!

My first thought was a food allergy. Doesn't have to be a new food, it could be one that she's had for awhile. My son developed an allergy to pears at 11m after being able to eat them since 6m.

He would get an upset stomach, then run a HIGH fever/diarhea, then an ear infection over the span of a week.

It sounds to me like she probably has a bug that is going through her system. My son caught a nasty bug (from daycare of course) when he was around that age. He threw up a few nights after falling asleep, and did not seem to wake up (I took him out of his crib immediately, waking him up, though...). I think he had a sinus infection too, because I became sick soon after he did and had the most terrible sinus infection ever. (I could not smell anything for a couple days, it was freaky!)

The mild fever and diarrhea are not explained by anything going on in the brain... It is most probably just a weird bug.

You mention going out to eat, and she became sick that night. Did she eat anything unusual, or contacted any sick people? Just something to think about.

On a side note: Wouldn't it be better if your doctor told you to be sure to bring her back if it doesn't stop in the next couple of days? Why does he/she mention anything about the brain at this point and freak you out, I do not understand... Sigh...

I hope your daughter will get better soon...
