We are headed to Disney World in Dec and after hearing a horible lost kid story I was looking into buying a child locator. I have seen the Brinks commerical and I know there are couple of other brands. Any one ever use one and liked it?
Thanks

We have a teddy bear one that I like. We got it from a website called, www.YourGreatestProtection.com. They're very reasonable and the customer service was great (I called because I had questions). Hope that helps! =)

We bought one for the same reason - Disney - we bought the one that has the Teddy bear that goes on the child's sneaker or belt loop. Our son is an active 3-year-old & we had visions of him darting off when our heads were turned. Turns out we didn't use it - not even once. Our son was either in his stroller (to conserve energy - it really is a lot of walking) or getting in line for something or on a ride. There just wasn't a time when we weren't talking or interacting with him & he didn't even seem like he wanted to wander from us while we were there. We didn't know how he'd behave, though, so I'm still glad we bought one.

I never have.

My son has been to Disney World twice. Once when he was 4 and once when he was 6 (his sister also went when he was 6 but she was only 9 months old! lol)

I sat down with him for months ahead and explained the rules and how Disney was going to work...no walking away, no running, stay with the stroller etc. I also told him who the cast members (with the name tags) were to ask for help if he did get separated. Another little tidbit I told him was that if he needed help and couldn't find a Disney CM was to ask a mom with little kids for help. My feeling is a mom will always help (wouldn't you?) especially before a dad might.

He knew his father's cell phone # (even at 4) because he calls Daddy every morning before school. By the time he was 6, he knew our home info too. I have to say there was never once an issue. You are so busy walking around and waiting in line that there isn't much time to get separated.

When we went when he was 6, we also had 4 other family members with us. The rule was (and everyone knew it...including the 4 other adults) that the only 2 people my son was allowed to be with was his father or me. I didn't want one of those situations where I thought someone else had him and didn't. If they wanted to take him somewhere (on a ride/in a store) they had to tell me first. And this was my MIL/FIL, step mother and my sister. And that worked out fine too. I knew where he was at all times.

HTH
and have fun!! I am so jealous. We are aiming for Christmas 2009 in Disney World!

Our kids were 4 and 6 when we went and we got them dog tags with their name and our cell numbers on them. We also went over the rules and introduced them to staff at Disney who are more than happy to discuss the issues with kids at an appropriate level. They were great.

But, truth be told the kids were so overwhelmed that niether one of them, including my track star, left our sides. They were in the rental stroller (Way worth the price) or in line with us...

E., we are headed to Disney in April and I was looking into something for my 2 children also. I found the following website, www.safetytat.com. check into it, they are temporary tattos you can order that you give whatever info you want on the tattos. Have a great time in Disney!

can't help you, sorry, I only vaguely remember maybe seeing the commerical but i have no idea about cost or how it works.

It sounds like a good idea though for a trip like that, with lots of crowds, peace of mind would be invaluable. You might want to practice stranger danger and who to ask for help etc etc and plan out your meeting places ahead of time, on top of the locator if you end up using it.

Have you had your kids fingerprinted all that good id stuff???
better safe than sorry.

I was just at Disney for Halloween with my 2 1/2 yr old. She was great.
We did not use one, I did buy one of those baby leashes but never used
It. We took our own stroller, and I am glad I did after seeing all of the Disney
Ones being used. She stayed in it almost the whole time. I also went to walmart
And made a doggie tag that said " if I get lost please call my mommy at *** *** **** "
Then when we got there we bought a lanyard with the pins and I pit it on there that way she always
Had my with her.

I have not had or used O. but I have a few things you might want to incorporate. Teach your child your cel phone number or write it in Sharpie in a shoe or something and make sure the child knows where to find it. Also, I have friend who always tells her kids if they get lost, ask a mommy for help. She tells them "Daddy's are safe, but mommies are safer." I think that's a nice way to put it that won't scare the child. Have fun!

Never used a child locator, but have taken small children to Disney World many times. Good advice below: make sure your child knows how to identify a character/employee if they get lost & have your name and cell phone number somewhere on them at all times so that you can be reached. I don't know if this is true or not, but someone once told me that the whole of Disney World is under video-camera surveilance for this very reason. One other great tip someone gave me: if you are taking your stroller - tie a big, bright colored ribbon on the handle. It makes it so much easier to find it in the masses of strollers parked at the entrances of rides. Have fun!

We haven't used one, but have friends who got one for Disney. Apparently it was OK, but didn't work as well as they'd hoped (range not great, etc.). I'm not sure how old your child or children are, but we did Disney last year with our then 4 and 6 year old daughters. The 4-year old is a runner, but we were fine. We talked a LOT before leaving about the rules and that if they didn't stay close we would have to leave all the fun. They were very good about holding hands and staying close, and they too rode in one of the Disney strollers a lot (especially the younger one), which helped too. Before going, we also made sure they both knew both our cell phone numbers, and we wrote their names and our cell numbers inside of their shoes, so they weren't readily visible to strangers, but they knew where to look if they did get separated and couldn't remember our numbers. Another thing was to make sure they knew how to recognize a Disney cast member (their name tags), and that was who they should go to. We talked a lot about all kinds of stranger stuff (OK to kick and scream like crazy if someone tries to hurt or take them, etc.) in a way that empowered them without totally scaring them. We also did it gradually over a couple of months before going so it would really sink in and not overload them. It's really good info for them to have in general, so I now feel like they're better prepared in general when we're out and about. I don't want to discourage you getting the locator since you may have more luck with it, but if your child(ren) are old enough I'd also to some other prep as well. Good luck and have fun!

I think preparing your child several weeks in advance of the expectations in behavior and to set a game plan in motion will be grateful beneficial to keep your trip safe and fun.

I am strongly against any type of RFID tagging - period.
